That one shot where the ceiling light cast a shadow on the top half of his body was super dope, I could totaly see a mob boss talking to his grunts in that scene.
Somehow when I watch one of your videos my mind is blown NO MATTER how many times I watch it! All your videos always clearly show how much you believe in and use they amazing principles you teach here. Thanks so much and please never stop uploading!
Thank you for *showing us the light*. It is a basic fundamental of film and photography, but we're always learning on how to manipulate. Excellent post as always Simon.
I absolutely adore your film style. You can see it in your videos and Instagram posts that you know what look is your own and you own it every time. Inspiring!
I've learned such valuable things ever since I found your channel. Will always be very grateful for talented individuals such as yourself that share their experience with the rest of the filmmaking community. Please keep doing what you do :)))
Please don't stop doing this videos, Simon! Is so cool to see how you motivate to experiment by using the basics of filmmaking, that's something that you may not find in other RUclips channels. Good work! stay in this path. Thanks from Argentina :)
love these videos and your calm, thoughtful voice in the youtube filmmaking community. great info and great energy all around. thanks so much for sharing all these years.
This channel; is too great! I'm making a low budget (read NO BUDGET) horror movie and everything I wanted to know is here. I still have no idea how I'm gonna film that werewolf transformation scene.
Amazing job Simon, I really appreciate your videos, the lighting is essential in any tipe of shot, I am a photographer and I'm getting into video, you have taught me the most, thumbs up Simon keep up the good work.
cade, I really enjoy watching you improvise it's kinda like watching a detective solving a crime, you're a smart person Cade, I hope you make it places
Such a great point there about experimenting! I had that trouble a lot where I was too concerned about making it look as natural as possible, I lost a lot of the creativeness and mood. :) But it's great to be reassured that it's okay to play around and see how things turn out!
i just posted a short that i made the other night after years of learning for you, and from other channels like yours i definitely have a lot to learn and room to grow! thanks for your help :)
You're videos are truly so helpful I love the style & vibes your videos give off I made a super 8 video with the video you made on how to fake it & by any means my video is not good but I thank you for the motivation & inspiration you gave me that day to film
I yelled out: "Eat an apple?" Then I heard the wet-crunch to which I'm so accustomed. Then like Pavlov waiting for the dogs to react, you got me... Excellent presupposition.
First of fantastic video. Although you did mention that you didn't bring any strip and I think it would be a great idea for a future video to mention what basic supplies a filmmaker must have at all times on a shoot ( lights, string, lens, extra memory cards, a way to power things if there is no close outlet, extra batteries, extra mics, string, extension power cords, etc.) you know or just whatever you come up with. Just like all your other videos Im sure you will provide lots of helpful info and feedback. But keep in mind it's just an idea. Btw always have an extra camera. (speaking from experience.)
I think your short doc about your brother was pretty good btw! That's what I'm producing too, I'm using yours as inspiration. Mine has to have only 3 minutes, that's difficult haha
I don't have transport/money for lights so may have to do with a cheap light to use on top of my Sony A7S ii...what type of light would you recommend to put on top of the DSLR hotshoe?
Hey Simon ! If you ever see this comment then I would really like your opinion on the Sony a6300, I would mainly use it for short films in the future . Thanks!!
thanks :) it's pretty nice, always good to have a spot light, and I like the S-type mount for soft boxes & accessories. Also pretty cool that it can be battery powered.
Sub $100 LEDs are powerful enough to shoot through diffusers like the ones shown in this video. You can pick up the Aputure 198 for less than $100 and it's a great little light for the cash, but probably not strong enough for diffusion. I use the 672 which has more than 3x the number of LED beads and it's juuuust strong enough. Go for fluorescent tubes in softboxes. You can pick up a kit with stand for ~$50 on eBay
Exploit/Over-utilize all the manual controls/options that you can find/figure in your point and shoot. Apply the same fundamental principles you see in all dslr/mobile-filmmaking tutorial videos holistically to the best of your resources and you are good to go. 100% of the cases, WORK on SOUND and LIGHT equally or more but never less !!!!
I have the Canon T3i. It's great for just about anything except when I'm shooting in low light, which makes it very grainy. Any tips for making it appear dark without affecting the quality?
Same problem over here, and after a couple days of research, the best bet is to buy a lens with a wider aperture like a Canon 50mm f 1.8 lens (which is the cheapest option at $125)
shoot in a well lit condition (and choose where the shadows go) and grade according to how dark you want it to be. that way you won't be introducing noise that affects the video quality.
That one shot where the ceiling light cast a shadow on the top half of his body was super dope, I could totaly see a mob boss talking to his grunts in that scene.

The honesty in your videos never fails to be genuine. Go team, mate! :)
true
You deserve every one of your Subs - great content - authentic (voice too). Inspiring. Keep it up.
***** Even the products listed in this particular video weren't blatant Ads. Just a simple, "Product name, which they gave me
This is absolutely the best channel to learn about DSLR video, lighting, audio, shots and editing. Thank you for your content.
Thank you for *showing us the light*. It is a basic fundamental of film and photography, but we're always learning on how to manipulate. Excellent post as always Simon.
Yeah, he really *_shed light_* on the topic! :)
I absolutely adore your film style. You can see it in your videos and Instagram posts that you know what look is your own and you own it every time. Inspiring!

very happy to hear this :)

love these videos and your calm, thoughtful voice in the youtube filmmaking community. great info and great energy all around. thanks so much for sharing all these years.
Your videos are always perfectly done, but I must admit that the DSLRguide episodes on cinematography are my favourite ones.
Very cool video. Lighting takes a lot of skill and creativity and I respect cinematographers for being able to use light in amazing ways!
This channel; is too great! I'm making a low budget (read NO BUDGET) horror movie and everything I wanted to know is here. I still have no idea how I'm gonna film that werewolf transformation scene.
oh wow, i love how all your effort is so obvious, i love how you keep it simple but still offer a lot of information. keep up the good work :)
Amazing job Simon, I really appreciate your videos, the lighting is essential in any tipe of shot, I am a photographer and I'm getting into video, you have taught me the most, thumbs up Simon keep up the good work.
all the best Adan :)
You are _the_ most inspiration RUclipsr I've ever come across

Recently discovered your channel and I'm really glad I found it. Amazing and helpful videos!
i dig the 4:3 end slates you've been doing lately. that 8mm aesthetic is super cool.
EXPERIMENT! Of course!
I get so caught up on how it "should" look that I fail to see how it "could" look.
Brilliant!
WOW.... Excellent. Learning a bunch even at my old age. Thanks a million

+DSLRguide definitely
Such a great point there about experimenting! I had that trouble a lot where I was too concerned about making it look as natural as possible, I lost a lot of the creativeness and mood. :) But it's great to be reassured that it's okay to play around and see how things turn out!
mm - there's a lot of value in authentic light that doesn't get in the way, but it's not for everything :)
i just posted a short that i made the other night after years of learning for you, and from other channels like yours i definitely have a lot to learn and room to grow! thanks for your help :)
Fantastic job! You are my favorite filmmaking channel on youtube! (after film riot ofc)
Man, you are good with this stuff... like really, you will become a director in the future!
You're videos are truly so helpful I love the style & vibes your videos give off I made a super 8 video with the video you made on how to fake it & by any means my video is not good but I thank you for the motivation & inspiration you gave me that day to film
I literally clap at the end of the video, very helpful, and that frase at the end...
Your inspirational mate!!! :D :D
Thank you for your videos.
Watched this one assuming that there'd be nothing really new to me, but you surprised me. Good ideas!
:)
Finding that apple is slowly becoming a game.
Lately it's a game of "hearing the apple".
Congratulations on 250k!
who els misses the apple scene in the end ;( now all we get is the sound effect :/
3:44 ;)
See my post/comment a moment ago, re:apple
Great video man! Excellent work!
I yelled out: "Eat an apple?" Then I heard the wet-crunch to which I'm so accustomed. Then like Pavlov waiting for the dogs to react, you got me... Excellent presupposition.
in case you made it, love those 2-5-1 progressions on the background music

Hi Simon! Do you know any good website to get high quality audio for short films? Thanks
freesound.org
Thank you
For score Ive recently used musicbed is it was a pleasure to use.
+Blake Bauer yeah, for tracks is Pretty awesome and easy to use!
I use Epidemic sound, it has a great browse engine, by emotions and energy

What would be a good LED Light Panel that you recommend? I have a low budget so the maximum would be around $100.

Ok thanks so much!
Amazing tips! :D
Hey Simon whats the name of the final light you mentioned? strobe
Aputure COB 120T :)
do a video in which u show how to get best of point and shoots
maybe one day!
Exploit/Over-utilize all the manual controls/options that you can find/figure in your point and shoot. Apply the same fundamental principles you see in all dslr/mobile-filmmaking tutorial videos holistically to the best of your resources and you are good to go. 100% of the cases, WORK on SOUND and LIGHT equally or more but never less !!!!
vinod yadav i do what i know check my videos but wanted toclearn more from him
I have the Canon T3i. It's great for just about anything except when I'm shooting in low light, which makes it very grainy. Any tips for making it appear dark without affecting the quality?

Get an f2.8 or faster lens and some more lights. But yeah the rebel cameras are shit in low light
try this video: ruclips.net/video/Flh31ZosL-Y/видео.html
That video helped, thanks!
Thanks for the info Bro.
