Idk if you know about this, but the first song ever written by MCR was about 9/11. It's called Skylines and Turnstiles, and it was written as a direct response to 9/11 by Gerard (who witnessed it firsthand). It was the reason he decided to start the band in the first place. He previously worked as a cartoon artist (and was actually on his way to an interview with Cartoon Network that day) when 9/11 made him realize that if he had been in those towers and died that day, he would've been unsatisfied with what he'd done. He wanted to do something more than draw pictures for a massive corporation, he wanted to do something meaningful. So he called up a few friends and asked them if they were happy with what they were doing; they weren't, so they started a band with Gerard and the rest is history. If you have the time, I'd recommend giving Skylines (or the whole album, I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love) a listen, it's definitely worth your time. The lyrics "if the world needs something better, let's give them one more reason now) are really special in my opinion because it shows how much Gerard wanted to make the world a better place. And he did, which is why that song in particular is a pretty hard listen sometimes because it makes me think about how far they've come and how they've evolved and overcome so many struggles. I'm so proud of them. Anyway, thank you for reading my little essay abt the origins of MCR, hope y'all have an awesome day ❤
It's always such a treat to see MCR on the channel, especially after the announcement today! For context: The band actually formed in direct response to 9/11, having been so close to New York City when it happened, so in a way they really were built on a "Foundation Of Decay". They released this song out of the blue a few days before they went on their first reunion tour in 2022, so i'm really curious if they'll be pulling anything like that again this time...👀👀👀
I always interpreted this song as them being anxious about their comeback (should we/should we not - it comforts me to lay in the foundations of decay - get up coward). They build something massive, it corroded from the inside, but it remained decaying and wouldn't die. Do you wait longer, or do you try build something new risking it all (knowing their history with substance abuse and mental health)
The lyrics in that video were very wrong btw Here are the correct ones: See the man who stands upon the hill He dreams of all the battles won But fate had left its scars upon his face With all the damage they had done And so time with age, it turns the page Let the flesh submit itself to gravity Let our bodies lay, mark our hearts with shame Let our blood in vain, you find God in pain Now, if your convictions were a passing phase May your ashes feed the river in the morning rays And as the vermin crawls, we lay in the foundations of decay He was there the day the towers fell And so he wandered down the road And we would all build towers of our own Only to watch the roots corrode But it's much too late, you're in the race So we'll press and press 'til you can't take it anymore Let our bodies lay, mark our hearts with shame Let our blood in vain, you find God in pain And if, by his own hand, his spirit flies Take his body as a relic to be canonized Now, and so he gets to die a saint But she will always be a whore You look stressed out Against faith (cage all the animals) Against all odds ('cause the message must be pure) Against change (you can wander through the ruins) We are plagued (but the poison is the cure) You must fix your heart And you must build an altar where it swells When the storm, it gains and the sky, it rains Let it flood, let it flood, let it wash away And as you stumble through your last crusade Will you welcome your extinction in the morning rays? And as the swarm it calls, we lay in the foundations Yes, it comforts me much more Yes, it comforts me much more To lay in the foundations of decay Get up, coward
I'm glad you posted more accurate lyrics because I was watching this video going "no no no, they're reading the wrong lyrics!" ...although there is one line in your correction that I still think is incorrect, the one "And so time with age, it turns the page" I think the correct lyric is "And so tired with age, he turns the page". Because in that verse, he is referencing himself, and it's only people who can turn a metaphorical page on their life, not time.
@AlextheHistorian time/age/gravity it's all about getting old. The lyrics this person posted are the correct one. It's even on Spotify exactly like that.
@@wilsonmenezes5054 the lyrics on Spotify are based on the Google lyrics you find when looking up the song which have a tendency of being inaccurate. MCR even said at some shows during the Return Tour, they when they looked up song lyrics on Google they were wrong. Although, I have seen some live videos of this song taken by drone, and I think there might be one or two inaccuracies in the original comment, but the lyric video is wrong.
It is an explanation why MCR split up in 2013, but in the same time it is so so much more a wake up call to the world ( my interpretation). I absolutely love Foundations of Decay and MCR, and I want to spend at least a month in Gerard Way's brain because- genius. ( I'd probably explode in the first 4 minutes though)
Not sure if you realized it later, but the canonized lyric has to do with being made a saint. If someone is canonized they are added to the list of recognized saints. (Saint Anthony, Saint Teresa, etc)
Man, this video really misinterpreted the lyrics, pretty much bastardizing their original anti-war message. The band has always been anti-war and anti suffering of innocents, they also aren't patriotic.

Gerard saw the 9/11 from the train window. That's because of this tragedy he started the band. Keep reacting my fav band ever please 🥹🥹🥹🖤🖤🖤🖤

You look stressed out
Against faith (cage all the animals)
Against all odds ('cause the message must be pure)

We are plagued (but the poison is the cure)
You must fix your heart

@@AlextheHistorian It's definitely the way I wrote them! There is an acapella with clear audio and he very very clearly sings the lyrics I wrote.
