It all depends on what you value most about basketball.
Bird mastered the team game like no one before or since.
Jordan turned the game into a 5 man one on one contest.
If dunking is your thing then Jordan is probably your goat, but I love the great passing and unselfish play of the team sport of basketball, so there is no greater example of how the game should be played or demonstrations of its possibilities than were provided by Larry Bird.
    🕊🐐

Larry Bird actually allowed McHale to have that scoring record because one of his old enemies was guarding McHale that whole game so Bird made sure to get the ball to McHale as much as he could. The result was a new scoring record and an enemy getting absolutely bodied the whole damn night. The only catch is McHale tapped out too soon as he could have easily gone for 60 or even higher just to twist the dagger a little more. Bird was not satisfied so he went for the record and broke it easily.

    • @faith.s_mom
      @faith.s_mom 5 месяцев назад +3

I think McHale only held the record for a couple of days before Bird broke it, telling McHale "You should have kept going!". The other thing is that people watching these highlight reels of Larry don't realize that he played THE WHOLE GAME with that kind of hustle ~ I'm from outside of Boston and got to see him in action a couple of times at the Garden. He was inhuman!! I swear it seemed like he had eyes in the back of his head~ that's how good his court vision was. Insane. Yes, I think Larry Bird was the best passer of all time!!! Thanks for the reaction!! ❤💯

  • @tom7471

Well, Larry was one of the best shooters in history, one of the best passers in history, had over ten rebounds a game for his career, was one of the best team defenders to play the game, was founder father of the 50-40-90 club, and was the clutchest player (along with MJ) that I ever saw play the game. In short, he is the best all-around player to me. Micheal definitely was the best and most creative scorer, with thousands of works of art, but this guy truly made everyone of his teammates a better player just by the many, many things he did on the floor. Thanks for the reaction! Well done.

Now, if you want to see how Larry’s philosophy of unselfishly passing ended up influencing the entire Celtics team, transforming them into (imho) the greatest passing team of all time, and arguably one of the overall greatest teams of all time , watch “1986 Boston Celtics Tribute - The Beautiful Game” . They were so in sync with each other they were The Hivemind, and played so smoothly together it was almost like watching Basketball Ballet.

Gotta give props to dj. Bird said he never played with anyone better than the soul man. It’s too bad he passed away so early. Dj was so humble, and just did his best. Bird and dj had a connection in their game almost like they could read each others minds. Bird had pretty good chemistry with all the players. But dj was that something special that could be used as a secret weapon when the game or larry called for it.

Well done. So many miss the point you didn't. Bird might have been very average running and jumping, but his coordination, body control, vision, awareness were all top notch. His best asset though was his PC's processing power. The man could dissect and react to conditions faster than everyone else. The number of times he responds with great plays with only a split second is what I hated most about him as a Phily fan.

This points up why its sketchy to compare eras. Look at the paint that Bird is passing into. It looks like the New York subway at rush hour. Then look at the spaced floor of today. Compare the space that the ball had to get through. How many defenders the ball had to get by. Its totally different. Liked your reaction to this.

When McHale broke the record he took himself out of the game and Larry told him if he ever got that hot he wasn’t coming out and thus you have the Hawks 60 point game. So yeah, McHale didn’t have it long. lol.

I wish I had recognized how epic basketball was back then. I lived in LA and got so sick of “Showtime” I became a Celtic fan. They just seemed to work harder as a team. It was such an amazing time for hoops. Not much of a fan of the nightly 3 point contest now. You watch, someone jacks a 3, nobody under the basket or following shots. Then rinse and repeat. I wish they would eliminate the 3 point line and bring back true centers.

A couple of things to notice: first, he'd have had a higher PPG average, but he'll pass up his shot to give teammates their touches and points...and loyalty. Next, do you notice the names he's making monkeys our of? Pippin. Barkley. Wilkins. Kareem. Olajuwon. And more. He almost averaged a triple double for his CAREER, and his playoff numbers are slightly higher!

Those long quick passes of the run and gun has many uses, one is it saves a lot of wear and tear because the possession is short, it also changes the pace of the game because you might be slow balling for a couple possessions then throw a run and gun in.
If you're going to lose... lose how you want, not how your opponent wants. It's like boxing where you pick and choose when to use your energy and when to rest.

@16:22 Yes, with passes like that, Bird make McHale break the record for the Celtics (previously held by Larry). So yes at one point in time McHale was the all time best scorer for the Celtics.
It lasted the span of one game. Bird announced he would score 60 the next game. Publicly. The Hawks took that personally, they did their best to stop Larry. At the end, he had 60.
One thing is to be hot in one game. Another thing is to will yourself in being hot on a specific game. It's another level to tell everybody beforehand you're going to do that.

Another great reaction. I've been working my way through your Bird reactions (and plan to check lots of others), and am really appreciating your relatively open-minded, fair, thorough and deliberative approach to the question of the comparative merits of the various greats.
I'm not a fan of the idea of choosing only one GOAT-- for various reasons I'm more in the camp with those who prefer the idea of a Mt. Rushmore approach-- but one GOAT or not, I enjoy sharing your discovery of Bird's claim to the title, whether you would ultimately grant it to him or not (I said you seem open-minded and fair, but nevertheless, I can't imagine you, having grown up steeped in the newer players' feats, could bring yourself to break with the idea that one of them, or at least one of the better known players of Bird's time (e.g., Magic), could deserve that title.
And that's (mostly) okay with me. I still hugely enjoy watching your surprise, and hearing your knowledgeable comments, in response to Bird's many awesome abilities/strengths-- one of the greatest of which, imho, is his laser focus: even as he's falling fast and hard to the floor, he spares no look or thought for that. He won't even spare a thought about breaking his fall when he's got the ball in his hands; he's 100% focused on getting the ball to his teammate to get the basket. His brain is like a one of those massive flashing signs on Broadway, only it flashes just one word: WIN.
Thanks again for sharing your basketball savvy reactions, and for doing your best to be open to awarding Bird your GOAT vote, if there's to be only one finalist.
p.s. I don't know what percentage of the time this was true, but I've never seen Larry make a transitional/on-the-run behind the back pass that was less than 100% smooth and fluid, buI I've seen Magic--- who I absolutely love and who's a joy to watch--- make quite a few.

If Bird had been the primary focus every possession he would have averaged a triple double for his career. I watched the Celtics regularly and there were many games he wouldn't touch the ball 4 or 5 possessions in a row. When McHale was hot Bird wouldn't get the ball. Imagine if he had the ball in his hands every possession he was on the floor what his numbers would be. Crazy

Scoring, rebounding, assists - the complete package. Anything you needed for the W, Larry delivered. So often, it became normal. If you let the Cs stay close, you were gonna loose.
He made it look easy, because he was so incredibly gifted. A better rebounder than Patrick Ewing and almostest as good a passer as Magic. But as Michael Cooper said:"MJ made you look slow, Larry made you look stupid."

In passing, my top 4 are 1. Jason Williams, 2. Magic Johnson, 3. Pete Maravich, 4. Larry Bird. Those 4 are in a class of their own. The ball movement, teamwork, and working for the highest percentage shot available were just incredible, lightyears better than today. Plus, you have to have teammates who are paying attention and working together in order for everything to run smoothly. The 80's/90's was definitely the Golden Ear of the NBA. Great video.

Yes Kevin McHale was the Celtics leading scorer for 9 days. Then the Atlanta Hawks got to watch Larry Legend drop 60 on them.

Larry and all the great players that raised basketball up, Just to watch a week minded flopper proclaim himself the king. The game is soft, the players are soft and the officiating is a disgrace. Larry and Magic had to pull the league out of the crapper, appears it needs to be done again

Feel the exact same way! Bird & Magic were a great example of how the game should be played. They were unselfish with the ball & team players that in turn made the team better. Instead, now we see stat padding & the mentality of ...I'm getting mine & to heck with yours! It was that attitude in part ...that was ruining the NBA before. Because these cream puffs are getting paid millions upfront to win...they have no incentive to get better! They already have the money...why should they... Sorry got on my soap box! lol

Yes. Magic was flashier but bird made many more close in shots. Slap passes. Full court on the money every time not those other guys who by the way were guards

Lebron can't and never has passed like Bird. Bird full court passes were pinpoint. A few had the receiver double teamed and just perfect location. Bird was the greatest all around player to ever play. He hit shots off balance and like you said Bird Hustled. Lebron doesn't get a call he complains constantly to the Officials while his team is running to play defense. Yea Bird and Jordan complained every once in awhile but they didn't leave their team's out to dry like Lebron. They complained running past the Official's not running up on the Official.

Bird was very bit as good of a passer as Magic. Some people may not believe that but consider this = Bird as a forward vs all other forwards in his era (PF and SF) in assists per game = Bird finished #1 forward in assists per game for 8 seasons. Bird finished #2 in assists per game for 3 seasons and was 4th in assists per game for 1 season. Bird only played 12 seasons. Now compare Magic vs all other PG during the era played. Magic led the league in assists per game for 4 seasons and was #2 in assists per game for 6 seasons and was also 4th once and 7th once. Bird actually dominated his position more so than Magic!!! I still give Magic a slight edge due to the volume of assists but this was also due to Magic playing the PG position. Magic was a better ball handler and slight edge in passing but Bird was a better scorer, shooter, rebounder and defender!! And with Bird being a phenomenal passer, Bird actually was a more complete player than Magic. I bring this up because I have seen Magic on these modern "lists" as high as 2nd or 3rd and Bird taken off of top ten lists??? The disrespect given to Bird today is very sad!!!! Thanks!!!

Bird was always two steps ahead of the opponent. Like he had eyes in the back of his head. His teammates knew to keep moving and knew to head to the basket and knew bird could be feeding them the ball at any time. Bird passed before the defence could defend it but his teammates knew bird may send it to them and they were ready.

Then again, ive heard brongoblins say in the same sentence that hes the undisputed goat, and that hes underrated by the community, like how can you be both underrated and the best ever, simultaneously

    Greatest passers of all time:
    #1a Magic
    #1b Larry
    .
    .
    .
I could go for the ones you mentioned, Jason Williams, Jason Kidd, Steve Nash, etc. I could also mention Maravich, Lebron, and Jokic. Speaking of Jokic, I see Bird in him, the way he controls the floor, his shooting effectiveness from all over the court. Even the way he shoots is similar to Larry.
Speaking of Magic and Larry, they have the highest career win percentages on record, both at around 74%. That means they each won 3 out of every 4 games they played. Each of them played in the post-season every year they played. From '80-'91 the Finals had either the Lakers or the Celtics, and three times it was them playing each other (Lakers winning 2 out of those 3).
