The most overlooked advice on this is to wear a condom for those without kids and/or spouse! Lol Doing this with kids and all that is a whole set of struggles that really brings the weight of the world on you. My story is pretty crazy. I'll be able to tell it one day, but for now just gotta do the work! Awesome video Pain! 💪

I'm in that situation currently, just turned 30, spent the last year unemployed with depression after hopping between jobs in call centres, landscape gardening etc and being unhappy. I do want to pursue music and have been looking into mature student courses to gain qualifications, grants and ways I can avoid getting a "day job" that will make me miserable. At the end of the day though when you're relying on government welfare and family members etc to help put food on the table there comes a point when you have to be realistic and get a "day job". At the moment i'm just enjoying the freedom of lockdown but I have decided I no longer want to work 40+ hours a week being miserable. From now on I will only work the hours I need to and put more effort into music

I work in a job that I hate. Everyday I just wait for the 9 hours shift to get over so that I can take some rest and get back to making music. Just waiting for the right time to quit and do music full time. That's like my ultimate goal atm.

It honestly wasn't until after I left my job for personal reasons (childcare issues) that I fully realized what a great time we live in with music. I think a plan is important, but an exit strategy out of your job is more important. I had that before the childcare issues popped up, but then I really had to make sure I had my bases covered so I would never go back.
There are legit (why do I feel I need tonsay that?) options in-and-out of music to make money so that you don't need a regular 9 to 5 job in 2020. You just HAVE to be business minded, even if that means having a split personality. Be in your creative space, but when that beat is done? Switch to business. My humble advice.

Big up Pain! I like these inspiring stories and I respect that you’re someone that doesn’t blow smoke up people’s arses either in trying act like magic rainbows and unicorns will appear if you just believe hard enough. Although you’d probably make a lot more Ps £$ if you did lol.
You always seem to couch things in a certain amount of realism and in being pragmatic, where we are. Being realistic and pragmatic is not always synonymous with being negative... Respect!

DJ Pain 1 Yeh that sucks, but then that’s capitalism for you. We’re encouraged to know the price of everything, but discouraged from understanding the value of anything. And sadly society’s concept of value always seems based on pretty arbitrary concepts lol...
But I digress. We all gotta play that game regardless and fair play to you in trying to balance playing the game with being honest. Plus at v least you’re gonna hit that 100k subs mark sooner rather than later 👍

I work at and make beats pt. I'm in SC where jobs barely pay enough to live on. Although I think my music is dope, I'm still learning the ropes, but I'm pursuing my gift and my passion because I don't want to regret not sharing my gifts. Thanks for sharing, dude.

Shout out to my fiancé. She not only supports what I do, TapDaddyBeats was actually her idea. Can't even convey how grateful I am. Now I get to pursue music production full time with all my passion. I use to write software. I was so stressed. Getting laid off was the best thing that ever happened to me, and having my fiancé to encourage me to dive down this route rather than searching for another job has been incredibly perspective changing. Currently, I'm really not making all that much from it, perhaps enough to pay for our monthly groceries. However, this is the stepping stone I need, and this is some of the most fun I've had in my entire life. I'm selling leases here and there, and even more importantly, working one on one with artists as I meet them. I see nothing but potential and I never knew there could ever be a feasible way to do this for a living until now. Currently looking into sync licensing and film / TV placements for something a little more stable

I’m going to play it by ear as time goes on. Right now, I definitely can’t quit my job. I have a 10 month old daughter, so that’s not an option. BUT, I am hoping that ONE DAY, I’d be able to do just that. It would be a dream come true. Just gotta keep grinding it out. Some days are definitely super discouraging. Especially when you’re not selling anything. Not getting any comments. Etc. BUT, again, I’m not giving up no matter what. Because at the end of the day, it’s my passion, so it would just be a humongous plus if I eventually started making money from producing. Sigh... Lord willing.

Lol, facts on the condom thing. Seriously though, this video spoke to me man. As I mentioned in your previous videos and podcasts, fear alone has stopped me from really putting 100% into my music. Like you, I realized later that I liked school. I started TA'ing and even doing biomedical research in college and eventually went back for more school after college lol. However, in college I would always save up for equipment with left over scholarship money and buy things a midi controller, a maschine, or software until I had a whole set up and just make beats in my spare time. I loved it and have always good feedback but always feared I would be screwing myself for walking away from the academic path that I have started. For now I'm doing both. Your vids motivate me to work. I create so much music daily since I started watching your channel everyday. I'm also studying the business side of music everyday too because of you. You inspire me bro. One day, I'm going to have a collab with you 🙏🏽

Good video Pain 1! I've been wanting to transition for years to music exclusively. I've been a teacher for 16 years, 2 kids, wife, mortgage, etc. Music is about 20-25 percent of my current income, but it's mostly from engineering/mixing, but I definitely need to make more from selling beats online (the market locally is terrible...I always say they can download free beats, but not a dope engineer) to make that full transition and luckily I can take up to 2 years of leave from my job since I have tenure. Definitely considering joining your mentoring programs next week when I'm done with school. I have beats, people tell me their dope and they want to buy them, they just don't. I haven't been as consistent as I need to be, and the virus situation has allowed me more time to do so, but I think I still need some guidance in really getting my beats out there to more folks.

    • @Aliengroover
      @Aliengroover 4 года назад

Develop an exit strategy and a date to leave and don't back out. Map out a rough plan of what exactly you're pursuing in music. Get your odds and ends about it together while you have the job. I'm a believer in rest and health, but occassionally you'll need to burn and turn until you leave the job. It's worth it.
That's why, even with all of its faults, I like the "gig economy". The opportunity to float your income or make an income is great for creative types. Bills paid and you can afford that cable or new mic when you need it. It's honestly worked amazingly for me.

I got fired because of the COVID-19 outbreak in Spain, now I am focused on building my music career and I am sure I will make it, actually getting fired I think is a big opportunity, sometimes we stay at the same spot for years, just because we are comfortable, but not happy. Like Pain says, No job is 100% guaranteed, you may have the "best" job in the world working for a company, but then a VIRUS comes to the world and you get fired, you never know what's gonna happen, Keep working, I hope I can get back to all of you saying how it went 🙏🏻BEST

I know this video isn't about college, but it made me remember when you posted about that; you took the stance of (not really) needing to go and I disagreed with that (to an extent). Because, at the end of the day, it doesn't matter whether you want to make beats or play in amateur sports leagues or sit on your ass all day in front of screen, you're gonna need money for that plus the roof, insurance, (car,) clothes, food, etc. And going to some no-pay bullsh!t ass job just won't get you that.
But, seeing how you worked three jobs, pursued your master's, and made beats on top of other things, I assume your opinion to work however hard you need to in order to make your dream come true.
    It's complicated.

Listen never quit guaranteed money for fantacy money .Music is fantacy money even your friends and family wont support it. If you got kids and a wife you not quitting shit trust me. But it depends if your support system friends , family and your network is a hater or not . I had all haters around me . Evil demonic haters who didn't want to see me get anywhere . but here a shortcut before you get off the stoop ....Get you a lawn business or something where your self employed or a part time gig thats flexible either or . Then hire someone to work for you to keep some money coming in while you do something ealse. Why not have your cake and eat it too ? Keep something coming in while you fuck with that music shit because everyone does music , its the truth . but it works for some people make sure it will work for you before you let go of a bag is all i'm saying. Whatever you do do it now while your young it only gets harder to get free time later i'm 44 about to be 45 . I started making beats in 1999 I bought gear sold gear bought it again and finally quit . Now I got shit just about the way I want it almost and can try again . I will never quit ! been watching since pain had a hairline Lol
