DIY Smart Home Guy creates how-to videos for smart home automation centered around Z-Wave and Zigbee devices. Review videos are generally centered around Hubitat Elevation, SmartThings and Vera. I personally run Hubitat as my primary smart hub, however I do test products on the hubs mentioned. I understand that a home automation hub is not a path for everyone. I chose this path because I am a firm believer is advanced automation and local control.

What do you think? Do you like the occasional dumb home project or should we stick to Smart Home stuff?

It was entertaining and relatable, I’d keep doing them

Personally I have no problem with it being I'm in construction and since your humor could carry the topic. Perhaps these type of videos should be in addition to a weekly video, not in place of. Then there are ones where you could do both like putting in automated pocket doors.

The trips to Home Depot count was awesome! I always forget something or mess something up and have to make several trips too.

Ha! Yeah, fortunately I live less than a mile from Home Depot. I don’t know how people miles away accomplish anything.

I love your sense of humor. You're going to need a monster escutcheon...LOL. I'm about to do the same (went from top mount 7" deep sink to new undermount 9" deep sink...disposal is roughly 3" lower....my new cabinet have yet to arrive. Incidentally...my luck with tailpiece adapter to send disposal grindings into the single p-trap has been terrible...picture a geyser of food wast erupting from the other bowl of the sink (I opted for a 3 way double wye hub at the wall and put a screw plug in the middle leg which I thought I would need as a clean-out...never needed it). Gave each bowl its own p-trap. I hope the rest of your project went well.

I like how this video starts when it's light out and you can see that it's pitch dark by the end.

One thing I learned that makes life easier when I'm leak testing I always lay some toilet paper under the new pipe. If there is a small drip it shows up really fast on the paper. Works on toilets, sinks, etc.

Great advice. TP or paper towel are perfect. Make sure the area is dry before laying it down. never made that mistake myself... :D

Had exactly the same problem. Deep sink and 1hp huge Insinkenator having a drain pretty low. I ended up lowering my drain pipe, and it still has an angle enough to drain everything.
    Thank you for your video!

Thanks! Yeah, it was a huge bummer when I discovered the problem, but fortunately figured out a solution without destroying the house.

@DIYSmartHomeGuy1 it is a bummer! If I went with a smaller disposal, maybe I would have been good. But I'm not gonna give up my ultra quiet 1hp over a stupid flow issues. Gladly, my drain goes in a little wall right behind my half island, so I kind of had access to it from the outside. There was tons of patching, but it was worth it. Plus garbage disposal was over $500, ultra quiet, and we had a new born that time, so yeah, could not back down from the project. Now I would never get anything else, it's as quiet as my 39 dB dishwasher 😎

I would prefer a video on, "How to use a Ring g2 keypad with garbage coding on a Hubitat." It's good to see you know more about plumbing than you do about Json.

What's the USP of having the DIY Smart Home Guy show me what I can find in a million other RUclips videos? I'd honestly rather see what I subscribed for. No offense to your DIY plumbing skills Pete, but my vote is for Smart Home tech. Now if you had segmented into a Smart garbage disposal, that's a whole different approach that no one else is posting. ;-)

I hear ya, Doug. It was one of those things I had to do anyway so I might as well film it and see what happens. I watch a lot of diy videos and the problem is they are done by professionals who give you a false sense of how “easy” home improvement projects can be. I always find it helpful when I watch videos from people trying something for the first time so I know what I’m getting myself into (I watch videos from pros, too, to make sure I do it right). Just wanted to float it out here to see if we could draw some diyers into the home automation fold. But perhaps if I do more of these they should go on a different channel. Thanks for the feedback!

Absolutely do not make your garbage disposal smart under any circumstances! It will at some point be turned on when there is some obstruction in the way. Silverware and bottlecaps are one thing, human flesh is quite another.

Had a plumber tell me you should not come out of the garbage disposer with a horizontal pipe that’s why they give you that tail piece with a new disposer it’s an immediate vertical drop out of the garbage disposal other wise food will build up in the horizontal pipe

Interesting. I’ve put in a couple disposals and they have not had a tail piece. Nor do most the instructions I see online show that. I suppose it makes sense if you have the space, but I wouldn’t consider it deal breaker.

A great solution if you absolutely need a deep sink is a two level, double sink with the disposal in the smaller, higher sink,
Breaking out walls and screwing around with the homes drain plumbing is never fun and can present you with another whole set of problems.

    • @DIYSmartHomeGuy1
      @DIYSmartHomeGuy1  3 месяца назад

Yeah, I got lucky I had enough space to pull this off. I don’t like those shallow sinks, though
