The first time I head this, I thought, he wrote this for EVERY person in the world who is sick and tired of being beat down by those who think they control us. Very emotional song and Oliver reached down into his gut for this one!!
@@LukeHimself I've lived in or visited 48 of the states and there is poverty in all of them. The South is seeing a boom of jobs, building, and people moving in, so I would have to say I partly disagree with that. yes, there was a lot of poverty post civil war, but we are strong people and have picked our selves up and got on with building our economy
Somewhat yes, during the past year our strip malls are full, people are actually renting the storefronts. Last year the owner of a local strip mall was trying to sell, because the $1,500 per month unit rent was too much for the area and the only store left was Pal's and GNC. Now, he's charging over $3000 per month and every single storefront is full. Lots of people moved to East TN.
@@LukeHimself I'm in upstate SC and Ive seen rent SKYROCKET in the past few years. Like you said, to the point that people are being forced out due to the costs. Luckily, in the small town I'm in, they keep the rent low to attract new businesses. I just hope we dont get TOO busy!! lol
Anna; I am a 70 year old American. Men of my generation were raised not to cry, but I can't tell you how many times I have teared up listening to this song. What I can tell you is that I have teared up EVERY time I have watched your reaction (and I've watched it many times). It is obvious to me that Oliver's heart-felt song and performance touched you deeply. What I love about your reaction is that you imagine sitting in his back yard, jamming, and are able to perfectly capture how the song and that experience affects you. Your reaction is extraordinary and unlike any other "vocal coach" reaction while still offering an insightful analysis of his vocal and song-writing prowess. I'm not one to subscribe to YT channels, but I have subscribed to yours. God Bless and be safe. I hope you and yours are well!
Oh God my reply is so late, apologies for that! We all are united by music. :) I am very happy to know you liked my reaction so much! Thank you for your support, it means a lot to me. 🙏 Kaikkea hyvää!
Thank you for your reaction. Christopher Anthony Lunsford (Oliver Anthony) is not a "professional" musician, just a man communicating his feelings and thoughts through music. Christopher lives with his wife, their two daughters (a son on the way), and their three dogs near Farmville, VA, in a camper he bought on Craig's List, on a 90-acre plot of essentially unimproved/undeveloped land that they plan to eventually turn into a small regenerative farm to raise livestock. According to RadioVW "Chris’ goal is to give hope to and lift up working-class folks who are struggling daily to make ends meet in this upside-down world." This young man appears to have character and integrity and turned down a number of offers, including an $8M record deal, as major labels are vying to sign him. People interpret Chris’, and other artists' music in light of their own preconceived notions and biases instead of hearing from the artist what he or she intends to communicate. If you want to learn Christopher Anthony Lunsford’s (“Oliver Anthony”) thoughts on things, here are a few links to some of his posts worth listening to: It's a pleasure to meet you Part 1: ruclips.net/video/tmxyMJd7IQ8/видео.html It's a pleasure to meet you Part 2: ruclips.net/video/cv9uMXiY29s/видео.html ruclips.net/video/h3tQ5Pz0fUI/видео.html The fact that this song got over 70 million views since its debut would seem to indicate that the message transcends age, color/race/ethnicity, religion, political affiliation, and even nationality, and resonates with ordinary working folk the world over. Even though "the rich men north of Richmond" is a reference to politicians and “power players” in Washington D.C., and probably to the financiers on Wall Street, it equally applies to politicians and the “elites” anywhere. "I wish politicians would look out for miners and not just minors on an island (Eppstein Island) somewhere" is certainly an indictment of the elites who seem to get away with their crimes too often. Politicians ignore the needs of the people they supposedly represent while being busy pursuing their illicit interests and liaisons. The usual suspects are calling this the new “right-wing anthem,” link it to Q Anon conspiracies, and claim that the song disparages the poor. Ironically, voices on the right criticize Christopher for allegedly throwing his conservative supporters, who are supposedly responsible for his overnight success, under the bus; some even going as far as to call him woke, a traitor, and a sell-out for stating in a video that we are a melting pot and that our diversity is our strength as a nation. This only proves the song has struck a nerve and is right on target. Like Chris, I despise both political parties and their attempts to co-opt and weaponize this working-class anthem to further their narrative. Both sides of the political aisle seem to miss the point of the message which, as aforementioned, transcends age, color/race/ethnicity, religion, political affiliation, and nationality. This is what Chris posted on his X account recently: "I. Don't. Support. Either. Side. Politically. Not the left, not the right. I’m about supporting people and restoring local communities. Now, go breathe some fresh air and relax. Please? :) I'm not worth obsessing over, I promise. Go spend time with your loved ones." Christopher Anthony Lunsford (Oliver Anthony) has a collection of songs on his YT channel (@oliveranthonymusic) that he recorded with his Android phone and more on various streaming platforms, but “Rich Men North of Richmond” is the song that put him on the map literally overnight around the world. I previously stated that Chris was in the process of re-recording his entire catalog but that was incorrect; Chris (RadioWV) only re-recorded a few of his earlier songs using better audio equipment. I actually liked the simplicity, imperfections, and rawness of the original recordings just as much.
Great reaction Anna! To those not familiar with US geography, he is speaking of Richmond Va. North of Richmond is Washington DC. He is calling out all the rich politicians who are supposedly leading us

The way Chris (Oliver) says the word "like" comes from where he's from in rural Virginia. This manner of singing comes out in other places within the song. When he is speaking in a conversational voice you can barely hear the southern accent. Your observation that is a "soft spoken almost shy" is spot on. He is a gentle kind sole who is fed up with what is going on in the world.
Concur on the rural Virginia comment. I grew up in the North of the US and when I moved to VA it took me a minute to get the accent of the Southern folks. Now when I go back home they don't understand me. That said, I agree with soft spoken almost shy comment. The folks in these parts are very easy going, kind to others, but if you cross them or betray them it's a different ball game.
He is quite simply THE REAL DEAL. Won't sell out, can't be bought, has vocals and lyrics that grabs the heart straight away. As always, your commentary is very clear, understandable, and edifying. This song is so earthy, gritty, and conversational that it could be called a "blues/soul" song. Thanks for explaining about his vocal techniques and that songwriting device of alternating chords. Have a blessed day, Anna.

Hello Anna! Thanks for your time. A very distinctive dialect that I'm very familiar with, since I too live in the Appalachian Mountains and only a few hours away by car from where he and his family resides. I must of watched well over 100 reactions to this song before getting to you, Anna. The amount of technical knowhow you have, about the actual techniques of his singing is off the charts and to be able to process the analyzation whilst at the same time deal with the emotional overload that this song hits every listener with the first time it is listened to, makes you truly phenomenal. Your analysis of the song is fascinating and makes the song come to life. Great hearing from you again. Stay well and be safe. I'm always amazed how proficient your English is. Just amazing.
I have heard you say before that you see colors when people sing. I wonder which ones you see when he sings? I always find that interesting when you mention it. I don’t see colors or anything myself, but it is very easy for me to get wrapped in the emotion of a song. As they say, it’s got to have that feeling, or I don’t want it. Speaking of which, you did a great job keeping it together, I picked up on that. Very professional, but don’t be afraid to show more of that emotion when you feel it in your videos. Also, some of the techniques you mentioned Oliver using, they are byproducts of his southern accent. One example is the addition of an H sound before the W to the beginning of the word “what”. This pronunciation and others in the song are commonly heard in conversation. Although here, and in music generally, it is more pronounced. Not all southern accents in the US are the same either. They are very regional within the south and states themselves. Oliver has a version of the Virginia Piedmont southern dialect. This is the reason for some of his particular pronunciation. I have a blend of the North Carolina/Virginia Piedmont dialects so I can pick it out easily. Mine is different to his, but similar enough. Just an interesting FYI. If you ever visit the south in the US, you will hear what I’m talking about with the regional differences.
he very much has that sound of" The Lamentation of the Forgotten" sound in the way he sings this song that is very much resonating with millions of people. love this guy a lot :)
0:38 to 1:40 is such a great natural reaction, very expressive face but being held back as much as possible lol. The voice, chords, and words all come together just right.
Oliver's voice is pure RAW EMOTION with a Gretsch G9220 Bobtail Resonator guitar a couple of dogs' simple mic setup powerful voice and lyrics drove an Ax right into the heart of America.
I’ve been binging Oliver Anthony reactions tonight, maybe 20 deep at least, but this is my first comment. You did an amazing job! Insight I haven’t seen elsewhere, and I love your commentary and expression. I subbed and will binge you later, but I gotta be at work in 5 hours. Thanks for making my night!
"Four chords and the truth". I've listened to RadioWV for a long time, so when this went viral I was pleased for the channel too. They promote so many great artists. Honestly; Nolan Taylor, Jake Kohn, Chris Huntt Jr... they're all great.
he went to the tip top of the charts without an album or record label or studio recording or even a single stage performance under his belt, that's what's really crazy
A word about the breathiness that pops up from time to time in his delivery: He sings in a Southern Appalachian accent/diaect that is much stronger than the one he uses for his normal speaking voice. In that strong accent/dialect, glottal onsets such as the "I" in "it" are sometimes dropped in favor of a breathy onset ("it" becomes "hit," "ain't" becomes "hain't").
Greeeaaat analysis Anna. I saw this the other day and it reminds me of the movement songs of the early 70's. Disheartening facts told with music. And it is a damn shame. Anna I'm still amazed how you can watch a video and rewind to all the spots you wish to discuss. Very impressive. Loved this. Video.
When he plainly states/says "I wish i could just wake up and it not be true, but it is, oh it is" ... that's the part the gets me. He's crying out emotionally then as if to say it's more than just my reaction to what's going on, it's very real. Also, he draws everyone in by including them in the lyrics, "they don't think YOU know but I know that YOU do". Powerful, most important song of the century.
The best reaction to this song on RUclips. Did I see tears a couple times? Me too almost everytime I hear it. You nailed it he's transmitting his inner emotions to us. That's it, that's what causes the reaction.
This song hit me hard. for a full week I couldn't think of anything else. I'm also glad that it introduced me to your reaction. Looking forward to seeing more of your reactions.
There's very few songs i have felt so much soul from as in this one. I'd say Ren - Hi Ren is also up there with his masterpieces which everyone may relate to in some way.

God bless you , God bless us . Un Français qui espère un jour vivre libre et en harmonie avec ses frères du monde entier .
I grew up in southern Virginia...I noticed quite a bit of the "old virginia accent" in Chris's songs. The shortened second syllable... the way he pronounces Richmond for one, sometimes leaving out the d completely. We would say Richman. I lived near Norfolk... and we all pronounced it Norfick. LOL Great reaction. Thank you!
Thank you again for showing this. This resonates with people all over the world in the fine people of the world need to stand up and stop corruption and dishonesty and hatred. We are mostly like the differences don’t matter in this country we need to stand up forget about any religious or ethnic barriers and be Americans and kick the crooked out of Washington. Thank you for showing this my love to you always you do a great job at analyzing the musical clips that you show. Thank you.
Thank you. I enjoy hearing your analysis and the things you notice. Loved it. I also love the mixture of Finnish and American 🙂 By the way, you have a beautiful singing voice.
I believe his pronunciation of the word “like” is perhaps more of an instance of common regional dialect. Same here in Kentucky. Although If you and I were standing next to one another and pronounced that one syllable word I don’t think you could tell the difference. You drew the word out, but if just used in a sentence you would not do that naturally. I probably have not made myself clear. Oh well.
I have heard hundreds of reactions to this and several by vocal coaches, and you said some things that others have not touched on. Very thorough and wholistic analysis.
I’ve never heard a song that not only I like , but that I think it’s the greatest song I’ve heard so far in my life of 53 years . The only song that since it came out that I can’t keep but asking random folks have you heard that song “ Rich-men North of Richmond “ and the only song as of yet that I actually like to watch these videos of people reacting to this song . All I know is that both my wife and I have became closer too GOD in the past 6 months . I know something “BIG” is fixing to happen. I’m not gonna get into long conversations about it with anyone or explain my self . I said what I said if you don’t know than you are one of the people I’m praying for . I said all of that to say this . Lol . This was the best “break down “ and “critique “ of this song Ive seen so far . Well done.

I’m from West Virginia and his song is so true it speaks volume, our politicians don’t give a crap about us
he very much has that sound of" The Lamentation of the Forgotten" sound in the way he sings this song that is very much resonating with millions of people. love this guy a lot :)
0:38 to 1:40 is such a great natural reaction, very expressive face but being held back as much as possible lol. The voice, chords, and words all come together just right.
Very high-quality reaction and insight. I appreciate you sharing your educated/informed opinion here. Kiitos!
Oliver's voice is pure RAW EMOTION with a Gretsch G9220 Bobtail Resonator guitar a couple of dogs' simple mic setup powerful voice and lyrics drove an Ax right into the heart of America.
Love your language ,very good musical dissection and explanation ! His sound is old time country !!!
Excellent informative analysis of this man's talents.
he went to the tip top of the charts without an album or record label or studio recording or even a single stage performance under his belt, that's what's really crazy
Thank you for doing Oliver Anthony please do more of him.
Loved this. Video.
I've never heard of him before, 🤔👍 I'm not a country guy but I like him. Good reaction. 🌟🌟🌟🌟
Really enjoyed your reaction. You have this great way of explaining things.
Tack Anna!
Wow Anna.! You did a bang up job on this one.! Great reaction.!
Wow Anna, your break downs are fantastic!!
Love your reaction and appreciate you sharing your thoughts and emotions in both languages... 💜
Very astute and informative reaction. was the best evaluations I seen so far
Looking forward to seeing more of your reactions.
good singing voice.
There's very few songs i have felt so much soul from as in this one.
I'd say Ren - Hi Ren is also up there with his masterpieces which everyone may relate to in some way.
I thank you for your reaction. I much enjoyed the instruction on his technique.
He’s a good demonstration of what make’s American country music so good.
It’s nothing more than 4 cords and the truth.
Thank you for spreading the message Anna. The world is going to be great again!
She's not spreading a message, she's reacting to the vocal and musical qualities of a song, not some "message" to make the world great again.
She is spreading a message by reacting to the song from Oliver Anthony and his message. If she didn't react to it would her followers see it? Do we not spread rumors, gossip or news by repeating it? @@patriziosailor
My God ,you are beautiful ,i followed Oliver here .
Please do a reaction to his other song, "I Wanna Go Home"
Very nice reaction. You kept your showed your human reaction and technical reaction at the same time. Very well done. I also loved when you described you being at a back yard jam session, that was a brilliant new dimension i hadn't considered before, thank you.
Bonne analyse Anna , cette chanson est universelle , il expose le cancer qui ronge le monde entier . Cette chanson , ainsi que : "i want to go home " est propice au réveil de l'humanité . God bless you , God bless us . Un Français qui espère un jour vivre libre et en harmonie avec ses frères du monde entier .
Anna you interpreted this song with beautiful insite.
WOW! Your analysis is one of the best I've heard on this song.
Amazing reaction
I grew up in southern Virginia...I noticed quite a bit of the "old virginia accent" in Chris's songs. The shortened second syllable... the way he pronounces Richmond for one, sometimes leaving out the d completely. We would say Richman. I lived near Norfolk... and we all pronounced it Norfick. LOL Great reaction. Thank you!
I know Chris well. He would love your reaction! Thank you and God Bless you!
Awee thank you for this comment! I would be absolutely honored if he saw my reaction some day! 🎵🙏☺️
Loved it.
I also love the mixture of Finnish and American 🙂
By the way, you have a beautiful singing voice.
Oh well.
I think you are one of the best at breaking down the mechanics of voice. Thanks.
That, and. You are beautiful. The beautiful that no one sees until they look (up)! ♥
I really love listening to your reactions. Your voice is amazing and I appreciate your insights.
I have heard hundreds of reactions to this and several by vocal coaches, and you said some things that others have not touched on. Very thorough and wholistic analysis.
Great reaction/analysis Anna!
I liked it enough to subscribe. You disectiong his voice and almost capturing his Southern accent too was well done.
Excellent reaction. Really enjoyed your breakdown.
Well done.
Visiting Vienna currently. Enjoying the city and concert I may miss this live but watch later. Have fun with the chat guys and Anna !
Love this song and your reaction too as always... since you enjoyed it Anna - Oliver Anthony has a love song out now! :) its called 90 Some Chevy and it would be so fun to see you react to it :)
I'm impressed by your analysis of and what you caught. I have listened to this many times and heard many reactions. You are very good with yours.
I just loved your reaction! Your beautiful accent and language! This song is so true and heartfelt by so many people -- all over the world really - truly amazing! Peace, love and God Bless!
Hi Anna you got a sub.. you did a great break down.. and the breath is key it is the always relationship we have with our soul .. Oliver Antony entire being was singing .. raising consciousness one breath at a time 😊👍
Oliver Anthony evokes Tupac Shakur/Bob Dylan/Woody Guthrie vibes here. He is also no one hit wonder (check out his other songs). FTR, I am a retired professional music critic with 45+ years experience. He is going to have a very long run - perhaps decades+.
I love how you are speaking Finnish and English 😁 i subscribed to you ☺️
Wow you are amazing, as is this song. You hear things that I hear but can't explain and then you give me words for it and make it seem so simple and easy. But I guess that is one of your gifts and I thank you.
Fun fact about this song that I I found interesting is that according to Chris (Oliver), he didn't finish writing the lyrics until a couple hours before they recorded this video.
This is worldwide. We all feel the same.
Two of my favorites here . This is what heaven will look like before they kick me out . Seriously this song is soul breaking and the absolute truth .
Thanks Anna. Lots of heartfelt emotion, caused by years of frustration at 'the system'. Glad he's connecting with so many. Enjoyed your breakdown! 🙏🙏
Thank You!
Hope you are well!
Much love
