Mariko wasn’t able to end her life in the Japanese way but she went out the second time with purpose and also in a very Christian martyr way. It will also help Toranaga too by showing the Christians that Ishido is a shifty person willing to use Shinobi to try to capture Mariko instead of doing it himself.
Yeah, I noticed that Catholic martyr angle too! So instead of serving Toranada but committing a grave sin in the process, she goes out simultaneously serving her lord and the Lord.

The director handled this episode brilliantly. He mentioned on the official podcast that it was Anna Sawai’s birthday when they were shooting the final scene of her blocking the doorway and part of the sequence to get her ready for the explosion involved a countdown before the big boom…but instead of a boom they counted down “3, 2, 1…Happy Birthday to you…” and went into the song with no boom…lol. Would really like to see the behind the scenes reaction of that anti-climactic goof!

Some blame for Mariko's death must and will be apportioned to Ishido, who lit the fuse on the gunpowder that killed Mariko. And Toranaga knew that Mariko sought a honourable death serving her lord, her mission had a high probability of her getting what she desired. I actually would not call it suicide, her death had purpose meaning and honour.

Great review gentlemen..... Osaka Castle was an immense block - I have been there! Surely Toranagas intent, was not merely getting out the hostages,,,,but also getting Ishido out of Osaka?To fight in the open? = I have also been to Sekigahara......Man this serieries is just wonderful......
The one critique I have about the show is the lack of a map GoT style in opening credits. Rock garden and sand but it’s also a map.
I hear FX has a cool map on their website but I never remember to check it.

I'm Asian myself and have them say I'm amazed that more people don't find japanese culture super frustrating and pedantic. Why does mariko have to kill herself instead of the hostages just asking to leave?!??! So much unnecessary death
Well, it's difficult to understand for modern people, especially people with Western mindest. In those times, the concept of human rights didn't exist, and death was always lurking nearby; it was truly '一寸先は闇(darkness lies one step ahead).' Death was not 'the end of life' but 'a part of life.' How one died was synonymous with how one lived. Thus, being able to choose one's place of death was a way to maintain one's pride and the dignity of life, and it was a way of life itself. We modern people, naturally protected by human rights, laws, and modern ethical perspectives, would hardly be able to empathize with this.
Mariko(Hosokawa Gracia)'s last poem:
Only by knowing when to fall
Do flowers become flowers
And people become people

花も花なれ 人も人なれ

This episode was the first big misstep of the series, in my opinion. Dave nailed how I felt about it. Two fake out deaths was too much for me. And then to blow her up? Weird. Hoping the show pulls me back in for the finale.
Did anyone else feel almost nothing regarding Mariko's son? Like, what am I supposed to feel about this kid disowning his mother, who we've literally met and never knew existed in the first place.
Why was Buntaro's son in Osaka when both parents were with Toranaga? Why wasnt Mariko with him being his mother?
Mariko’s son has already appeared twice. For Japanese women of that era, their 'sense of self-worth' depended on their relationships with others, that is, the roles imposed on them. For Mariko, despite she continue to live under the stigma of being a "traitor"’s daughter, she is desperately trying to live loyally for her lord. But she finds herself in a tragic situation, unable to find happiness either as a wife or as a mother. This was a critical scene that highlighted her plight. That's why Anjin's words, 'Live for me,' resonated so deeply with her.
This is a modern feminist version of the book. And the book itself badly distorts Japanese history by hijacking real people for their fantasy.

I’m sorry but this series is just boring in my opinion. After watching 9 episodes I am always left frustrated by how little the story progresses. We are talking about samurai and there are no fighting scenes that last longer than 2 minutes. They teased us with a big battle only for an earthquake to ruin any potential war amount the houses. It’s annoying that the most exciting character is a white sailor from England. I was expecting some badass samurai but it’s been more political than I anticipated
