Even if I don't agree with Tom on his opinion for everything, I appreciate that I can pretty much search for any board game and find a review of his. Makes investigating new games a breeze.
Finally a descent review of a great game, our group is an elgrande addict. And I disagree with you about the expansions. As for us now we never play the base game anymore, the expansions added a lot of challenge a re-play time
have this game since four years. it was my first biggger game and it is still the best! this is so much my type of games. this game will stay in my collection for ever!
I've had this game so long now that my copy of the rules lists an AOL address to contract Rio Grande even though they have their own URL listed for their website!! :) And I have the decennial edition so I think it must have been at least 2005 when I picked it up.
I find it odd that people complain that you can count how many go in the castillo. Just... don't count? When I play Bohnanza, I can easily count cards for the beans with 4/6/8/10 cards. I can count the rest too, but that's significantly more difficult. I just DON'T do it. Sometimes it's really hard not to count the cocoa beans (4), but as long as I'm not trying to count, the rest are easy to forget.
"It is how you play the rounds that matters." And than goes "Each round is played the same way". Hahahahahahahaha I know what he meant but it just sounds "terrific" hahahaha

But totally my sentiment as well.
Started playing this one in '97 and it is STILL one of my all-time favorites!
"One of the greatest games ever designed" amen! What an awesome game, the expansions are good as well.
I love this game. I do not own the expansions, but the base game is awesome.

Espiscally the expansion called provinces
This was my gateway game so I will always love it.
Wow, I've always passed on el Grande because it looked dull. I'll definitely try to get a copy.
You are correct. It does look dull. But for a strategic area control Euro, nothing beats it.
It's needs an update though. New art/theme/etc.
same here, if I can find a copy to try!
A classic loved it as a child, rediscovered it on BGA online, and just bought the reprint today, looking forward to playing it again.

El Grande Rocks! Love it! strategic and fun with any number of players!
What version is this where it has the english translations? Can anyone provide a link?

now its harder to count since the reprint have small boxes for each player as province
I just bought a copy of this game for 5$... I think i grabbed myself a bargain :)
I agree Tom... I totally agree your opinion.. El grande = _O_
I think this old version looks way better than the new 'updated' meeple version.
What's so bad with playing with only two?
Amazing review!!!
Thanks for doing a review... But you can't find it! Sad to find a cool game that can't be found
I agree, the game itself looks kind of bland, but the gameplay does seem very well designed.
Problem worth this game is finding a copy of it
Haha, yeah El Grande is good - but Nothing Personal has fired it for me when playing with more experienced gamers...
I found this game today, hidden in a Cupboard among 10 other board games.
