I agree. Could you from now on skip emails with politics in them? It only riles you, the author and the listeners and usually leads to nothing but people becoming polarized more and more. In the end it might really lead to listeners leaving. C'mon, we came here for the science, not for the politics.

I'd feel a bit reasured if they had on hand the PPE necessary to manage an outbreak radius of the expected virulence(?) of the soup they are cooking. I have in my rural area an ammunition factory. They actually located the place with some thought to safety and put their own convenience second.

In your country (USA) I think the best you can hope for in the current political environment is to communicate the evidence as clearly as possible.
Let informed people make their choice.
Not saying it's the best way forward in theory, but in practice it's the best you can do.
Let the unvaccinated suffer the consequences.
Just keep on disseminating the truth as best as it can be divined.
To achieve anything any better requires a political solution which won't come because the science of mass manipulation goes unchallenged.
Indeed it is an almost invisible science, a tool used exclusively by those with a lust for money and power.

Respectfully....A virologist cannot determine the safety of a lab. Human behavior makes the danger, not the organism. It is a sociological, tactical and political issue. A brief lapse in security or procedure over time.... How about a war? Civil unrest? A coup? natural disaster? Any of those can crack a lab wide open. Lets say a doomsday cult shows up, fully armed; Are all your colleagues likely to sacrifice their lives? Would the weakest link cower and give them access?
You make a biological agent ..... You create a potential for it's escape. I'm all ears, but you may want to turn to an expert in human nature and society. They would not have your confidence..... It will take some years to improve public faith and trust... not that it's your fault; TWIV is excellent ... but the media rhetoric, insults, the governments hypocrisy, irresponsible handling of information... and frankly.... the apparent greed and lack of transparency in the roll outs. That is a burden you inherit.

Who is qualified to "determine the safety of a lab"?

    • @norman_5623

We have input from experts on human behavior. In the aircraft industry, after WWII, aircraft designers, at Boeing and elsewhere, had to make flying safe enough to be acceptable to the general public, and they did lots of research into the behavioral aspects of aircraft accidents. Every significant accident was investigated by a panel of experts, who usually found the cause -- sometimes equipment design, sometimes pilot operation. For example, some accidents were caused by a pilot using the wrong control (moving the landing gear up rather than down, for example). A frequent cause was that controls were not standardized, and moving a landing gear up in one aircraft would move it down in another aircraft. The solution was to standardize controls. The saying is that every change in the operating manual was made with blood. This led to the specialty of safety engineering, which was used in the medical industry for example in designing complex equipment like lasers. (One guy who wrote about this was Robert Wachter, MD.) With biological labs, we now have a significant experience handling pathogens. They're not perfectly safe -- nothing can be -- but they're safe enough to argue that the benefits far outweigh the risks. I would argue that exaggerated speculations over security risks prevented us from cooperating with Chinese doctors and scientists, and cost us a significant fraction of those 1.1 million COVID-19 deaths.

    • @troychenier9877
      @troychenier9877 4 месяца назад

@@norman_5623 A single accident with aircraft and lasers are a danger to those present at that time. A single accidental release of a GOF virus means a global catastrophe for all of humanity in perpetuity. Beyond comparison.
You say yourself "They're not perfectly safe -- nothing can be". You'll need better than an argument of "risk/benefit", if you are making pathogens more infectious, virulent and lethal in a lab. ONE MISTAKE... and millions.. BILLIONS could die. The risk is absolute and existential. Without absolute, infallible, perfect containment, the risk is unacceptable.
You have fully convinced me, no hands are safe to perform GOF. It a gamble with mass death and permanent disability, without consent.
Knowing first hand the death, disability, illness and misery STILL caused by Covid-19... The failures of containment.. the impossibility of eradication.... To be making worse... Accepting that it COULD escape... There is no greater threat. There is no benefit to match it!

1:19:51 please clip out the mail bag questions and answers this week as its own short for ease of sharing because there are some very important discussions happening in this section, especially in regards to natural spillover and alternative conspiracy hypotheses for the origin of SARs-COV2. You all beautifully addressed some common laypersons misunderstandings about viral evolution and why none of the other suggestions are remotely logical when the science is more fully understood. I see the same misconceptions that these writers bring up all over any video that tries to have this conversation and it needs to be better refuted, thank you so much for addressing these questions 🦠 🙏 🧪
