Join Gaius and the Shelter crew as they build three timber frame structures just a few miles from our shop in Woolwich! This project includes a 30' x 32' Timber Frame home connected to a 24' x 24' Timber Frame studio, as well as a 24' x 24' Timber Frame garage. In this episode, we finish installing the roof SIPs and begin raising the 24' x 24' garage.

Props to the camera guy. Great coverage.
Indeed! One person filmed all of this, incredible job!
Great work as always! Curious to see how a timber frame like this looks after a few years with regards to shrinkage from the green timbers (i.e. any drywall cracks or noticeable gaps of any kind). Thanks for the video!
1: depends on the species they use for the timber. but that's why the panels are pre drywalled. No drywall is attached to the actual timbers. So really no movement.
Sweet fit on joints.Good workers!
Thank you!
Great series 🤙🏻
Would love to build one of these in S.D. but wouldn't want anyone else to do it but you and that wonderful crew. Just curious, how long did it take from start to finish on just the raising of the home to completely button up like that?
Have you guys done any blower door test to see what the air tightness ends up?
Do you like living in a plastic bag?
@@Helloverlordthats not how it works.
Builders are trying to achieve a total air seal and then they make controlled air exchanges through an air exchanger.
My house was build in the mid 80's with this system.
@@AndyFromm Thanks Andy, I know that, but air tightness is not the only important thing within construction. Walls need to breath, too, specially if made of styrofoam which degass long after curring...almost entire life span.
Point is not everything has to be air-tight.
This is SO much better than stick frame. However, no adhesive on sip splines, only spray foam? Where/what is the vapor barrier? Also sheetrock between roof sips and timber frame seems like a terrible idea if the timber is carrying load.
Big props to the camera and editing folks. This entire series has kept me completely engaged.
Hopefully this question gets answered! A timber framer in my area only gets his timbers cut in the warmer months(the mill he uses doesnt cut in the winter because the trees are frozen.) If you get timbers cut in the winter, do they ooze sap like ones cut in warmer months after the frame is raised? Didnt know if it was based on season or only because of temperature
Our standard protocol is to clean any sap off in the shop with a citrus based solvent, plane them and seal them with a citrus based oil. After that process we find the timbers do not weep.
Thanks!
Is there a reason you pre-drill for the braces? I thought you guys waited till assembled to drill your peg holes. I don't remember that being covered in the 24x24 online class. Thanks for any feedback.
We have recently started doing that to save time on the job site. There is no advantage to pre-drilling vs drilling after assembly like we show in the online course.
How did that centre post in the garage attach to the floor? I couldn't see any post bracket
What is the reach of the crane ?
80 feet.
What does SIP stand for
Structural Insulated Panel
The crew is great, but the troubles they experience with the kit , dont exactly Sell me on your Precut Packages
I am really loving this design. I didn't realize the garage would be detached. At first I assumed the garage was the lower roof line attached to thestructure. Can't wait to see the rest.
Not gonna lie. That’s how just about every construction crew wishes they could work together.
We’re really lucky to have the crew we do, it makes work very fun
Well done! As they say "there is always time to do it right the second time".
How about steel sips? Would be curious to hear thoughts on why you choose osb
Insulated Metal Panels(IMP) are currently best suited for installation on metal buildings. While they can certainly work on a timber frame their use complicates many of the other processes such as siding and interior finish. For interests sake we just finished building ourselves an 8,000 square foot steel building with IMPs and love them.
@@ShelterInstitute yes I’m interested to know how the exterior siding or snow-ledge stone detail work on metal sips. Interior seems like could just use firing strips as Defacto studs. The walls are much lighter so that’s one advantage over osb
