Wow, now that's an impressive wall of sound. Not one bad pick! Love seeing Low End Theory up there, even if your not into hip hop but love soul, funk, jazz and poetry, it's a must listen to, at least one time! this is the best DB great album showdown on You Tube!
My 3: 1) Talking Book 2) Songs in the Key of Life 3) Innervisions in ANY order you like, all 3 are absolute masterpieces of the genre. of course, there are many others worthy of inclusion but Stevie is special to me.
I LOVE the way he says " Betting without The Beatles" which sums it up perfectly. The Beatles Albums like Rubber Soul/Revolver/Sgt.Pepper/White Album are a given...
Marvin Gaye 'Pride and Joy' got me into Soul music when I was 16. My record collection goes from MJ to Metallica and Bob Dylan to NWA but Soul and Motown is my favourite genre. Don't know what it is about that music but that's the way it is. Redding (Stax I know) is my favourite male singer.
my three. 1. James brown- live at the Apollo 2. funkadelic- maggot brain 3.Roberta flack- first take ladies and gentlemen (the first ever I saw your face). nuff said.
I will unashamedly say this : if you are interested in soul LPs than look up my book on Amazon: Spinning Around: A History Of The Soul LP, Volume 1 A to K.
The only thing I'd say against this talk is... they say that the music was good from the mid 60s to mid 70s because the social climate had a lot going on.... well, today music is kinda sterile yet society has equally if not more stuff to write about.... I think the difference between the past and now, was that interesting social voices were given time to be heard in art, music and literature.... today, we raise idiots to gods and thus, we have sterile art amongst our modern society....great music happens today, but you have to scratch beneath the surface and investigate.
the whole landscape has completely changed with regards to mass music appeal.i grew up in the 60's and there was football, girls and music.thats it.so we made the most of all of it.we had no internet,no iphones, itunes and fuckin video games.today, the instant society has no patience and they want it NOW !! this culture has bred a generation who not only dont listen to an album right through, but even cut short a single song because their attention span is about 20seconds.i pity them.they will never get the joy we had of getting home and unwrapping that brand new album,SMELLING it !! reading every word on the cover and sleeve and of course, listening to the whole thing from start to finish, the full ritual. the sterile fare on offer today has either been done already way back and done much better or blatant copies of sounds from the "golden era".someone said to me the other day that RAP is every bit as good as the classic soul music from that period.........errrr,no,its not.
Cockney Red I don't like Rap or Hip Hop but to the people listening to it today it IS as good as old school soul music because it is theirs. Every generation moves on from what their parents listened to, imagine the Swing Band fans hearing Rock and Roll in the 50's and saying 'What is this shit that the kids are listening to today?' Then the rock and roll fans having their kids growing their hair and listening to Pink Floyd and The Doors and Led Zeppelin etc, etc.
very refreshing that the guests all know their stuff, especially danny baker.seen all the "album showdown" docs and this one is the best.

Trevor Nelson was struggling to define RnB without saying the word 'soul'. So it's soul music
