Good find. You avoided the problematic 03, 04 cars, and the balance shaft problems in the 06, 07 cars. Of course you still got SBC and airmatic to deal with. Another option is the 05, 06 S500 4matic, final model years and no SBC to worry about.

ugh I love this video! I've been driving luxury foreign cars since I was 16. my first car was a 1988 Mercedes 300SEL, it was my dream car at the time. since then I've had a Land Rover Disco, Audi A4, and 3 BMW X5's. I just sold my 2008 X5 and I'm looking to get back into older cheaper luxury cars. even though my friends think I'm crazy. this is the exact car I'd like and I'm literally going to start looking for one. just because I'm a girl doesn't mean I don't like to get dirty and work on my own luxury cars! thanks for the great video!

I own an 07 E550 4 matic. Had it not been for the 4 Matic system, this car is reasonably reliable. But I'd never recommend one to someone who has to have it be their reliable daily. Even though the Acura doesn't have the thrust of the Benz, I'd have strongly recommended the Acura over the Benz, even though I'm a huge fan of the way these cars drive.
With that said, I love your channel, and I understand the predicament you find yourself in when making car recommendations to people.

Nice video! But every time I watch videos from the US I realize how different the used car scene is from ours here in Germany. For example the mileage. Dude „only“ 124k miles that’s like 200.000 km. That’s one hell of a lot kilometers here in Germany. You will have a hard time finding anyone who would buy a car with that high mileage. Also what you guys call „like new“ condition looks pretty damn worn to me. My 2004 CLK 320 looks like it just rolled out of the factory. No scratches no dents, the leather like nobody ever set on them...but still nice video!

They don't pay attention to the minor details and let things go and then bitch and moan when shit breaks and then open their wallets for new shit that they will neglect and repeat the process. In the US you see that with everything from cars to buildings to roads and everything else.

I purchased a 2008 CLS550 AMG in great condition besides some few issues for 4k. 149k miles. I’ve replaced the water pump, belt, engine mounts, trans mount, rear air springs, air pump, and break pads. I paid less than 600 dollars for all those parts and did the work all myself. The car RUNS and looks BRAND new. No oil leaks or anything (i’m meticulous when it comes to maintenance) but for the most part this car is the best driving experience and most dependable car i’ve ever driven. That whole thing about reliability must be from people who don’t keep up with their cars and don’t work on them either

Great point about checking previous service history at the Mercedes dealer. I'll add that Mercedes dealers all seem to report all the services they perform to Carfax and all services are retained in a data base that can be assessed at any Mercedes dealer. Almost three years ago I bought a 2004 CLK 320 coupe sight unseen. I bought it because the dealer, 600 miles away posted detailed photos of the car and the Carfax report showed that the car had ALWAYS been serviced at authorized Mercedes dealers seemingly at a "cost no object" basis. The car has 17,000 original miles and by the time it was delivered to my driveway, I had received copies of every work order ever written on the car which the three dealers that had serviced the car provided to me. The car will have 45,000 miles or so once I have owned it for three years and it is perfect and has been just like a Mercedes should be. So always check for previous service history and if it hasn't been maintained to the letter of the manufacturer's maintenance schedule, walk on by: there is always another really good one out there!

I live in Minnesota, even I knew not to get the 4Matic. Snow tires all the way, and baby it, you should be doing so in winter with air suspension anyway. I did however, get my 2003 E500 with the air suspension because I can handle the maintenance myself.
The 7 speed gearbox is trash, the 5 speed gearbox, golden and holds loads of torque.
Picked mine up, and the drivers motor mount was equally as bad as yours, and trans mount was shot too from age. Aside from that 3 piece set(replace them all), it only needed a ball joint and a power steering hose. Total of $400-ish in parts, and my own labor later and I have a smooth reliable cruiser.
I only paid $1,700 for the car with 155k on it and got a set of AMG C43 rims to go along with it. Aside from the few things that it had wrong, it was very well maintained and had no leaks anywhere but that hose.
4Matic is a nightmare. They’ve been making RWD vehicles since their inception as a company(prior to everyone else) they typically do one thing right, cmon use your heads…

We put 90k on it driving between Iowa, Georgia, and Vermont and outside regular maintenance, I put a sensor and a fuel sender in it. Extremely reliable and capable and dirt cheap because no one wants a C Wagon.

My wife's 1998 E320 had the engine jumping like that last year. I changed the entire set of motor mounts the first week in July (and engine oil & filter too), just before we went on a road trip for our Anniversary. The car was making weird vibrating noises while at a stop in gear (e.g.: at stop lights). Turns out the engine mounts were bad, plus one of the bolts was also sheared off. With almost 290,000 miles, it purrs like a kitten. Anniversary trip was smooth and (in terms of the actual driving), uneventful. We enjoyed the trip and the time together away from our regular life. Too bad some guy decided to rear-end me in her 'Benz two weeks ago. Ugh!
The 'Benz has been fairly reliable, but it cannot hold a candle to my Toyota Camry (also a 1998). Over 453,800 miles and repair jobs have been maybe half what they were on the E320 in spite of about 50% more miles. Having owned four Volkswagens previously, I'm very familiar with working on German cars.
Since we've owned the 'Benz, I've only ever used full synthetic engine oil WITH the Mercedes Benz approval numbers on the back of the jugs. We bought the car from a friend, so we've known the car and its repair history. I did a lot of the repairs on it myself over several years before buying it. Similar history with the Camry, but way less repairs.

Unfortunately, as you probably know, those motor/engine mounts are a very common problem on those cars, and the bigger the engine the worse they usually are. It looks alarming but that sort of thing generally doesn't do any damage. However, if they're left and it ends up tearing up the other mount/s as well it can do a whole lot of damage which will, pretty much, write the car off. That's a properly nice example though, it's clearly been loved and cared-for by its owners and the mountain of history from the dealer certainly shows the owner wasn't afraid of spending money on it. Sure, it needs a few repairs but how many 10-15 year old used vehicles don't. That car is exactly what I would have been looking for in that situation, but if I hadn't been able to verify the history I'd have carried on looking, it really is utterly vital on these as there is a whole lot that can be wrong with them that a less experienced person can easily miss and will cost an absolute fortune to sort out...

The 2.5L engine in the Lexus IS250 was probably the worst engine ever installed in a Lexus...slow, noisy, unreliable. I was a technician at a Lexus dealership and we rebuilt the 2.5L engines very often (5-7 per month) in 2012 through 2014. Don't buy one.
