Phil you are honestly one of the best fucking metal vocalists. Not only are you amazing at what you do... But you actually take the time to interact with your fans and make people even happier (As if your music doesn't already!). \m/
Strychnia he is good at the vocals. but i heard he can be quite the dick out of the whole group, from a friend who paid to get back there and meet them. said phil was the only one to be dickish. i dont care. i mean he writes about cutting up whores.so im not expecting him to be disney. but damn show love to the people who work so you can continue yelling and BREEing all day.
+TheKylebreezy Actually he's a really nice dude however i think when you're on tour and you have to play 2 h shows every 3 days you'd be pretty stressed too xD
+TheKylebreezy that's probably from touring stress. I've never been on tour, but as soon as my band gets to the point where we start to tour, then i'll have to deal with that. I'll try my best not to act like a dick, but once my band starts touring i could probably get an idea of how stressful it is.
Bro. He’s good but stop dick riding
You should write a song completely based off random comments on your videos. lol
OH MY FUCKING GOD... THATS THE BEST IDEA I'VE HEARD IN A LONG TIME ^~^ PHIL DO IT!!!
i agree
Phil you`re such a great guy. Respect your work an enjoy your great music.
Chuck Schuldiner, being the death metal pioneer that he is, actually did A LOT of that awkward phrasing with his lyrics. This was probably because he also played guitar while screaming.
He did it better than anyone ever, too! RIP Chuck.
phil bozeman
He was so right about awkwardly ending on lines
Can't wait for WhiteChapel to come back to the Poconos. You guys blew the roof off for Mayhem Fest!!!!!!!!!
i like what you said about fitting the words with the music
Genius bro genius
That's cool, he uses the same process as Manyard (sorry if spelt wrong) from tool. Respect to u guys for putting the music first.
Thank you! Someone said it! It always throws me off during a song when they randomly stop the sentence.
I would just like to say how I like that you humble and talk to people like human beings and not like they are less superior. I do see bands do that. So I am grateful for your humbleness and Whitechapel as a whole is beautiful band.
I'm really glad you post-write, cause it makes all your songs sound much more synergistic. unlike a lot of other bands that pre-write and have tons of songs that sound like the band obviously modified something to match the lyrics, and it loses that cohesive feel of a song progressing, it just halts. So thanks for being smart and making bad ass music!
I do the same way of writings. It's good to know a professional does the same. You are beast :)
Very helpful thanks Phil
I can't say that i have ever songs ending awkwardly, but I will keep an ear out for it.
I like hearing you talk about your music, since it's such a huge part of your life! It's super insightful to hear what you have to say. More videos!!
You do the same process I do when I write lyrics that's pretty kick ass!
You just fixed my problem with writing.... thanks
A good answer to hear is a typical day on tour and how you prepare for each performance!!!
***** no he doesn't. You clearly don't understand music if you are going to criticize Phil Bozeman who is potentially one of the best metal vocalists to ever live.
I write to songs and I was always unsure of whether I should be doing it that way or not, but you just answered that for me.. yet another thing you have taught me! Thank you so much! :D
I really like your thought process, when it comes to lyrics and vocals. Im not a musician, I listen to music, but I dont play. These types of videos gives perspective on the subject, really lets you delve in, learn stuff about the inner working of creating music. There is more to this, obviously, but in any case, thank you for sharing YOUR thought process. Always a memeber of The Brotherhood Of The Blade ;)
I like this because it's what I do. Love the videos, Phil. :)
Question: How have you found your lyrics have changed from the first recordings to your current stuff and why is that?
THANKS IF YOU READ THIS!!
Nice!
Well I'm not in a band yet
But my approach to writing has always been starting off with a title and then give it body
Like writing guitar parts or drums
You have different words in each verse or riff
Or lick
You get the idea
Thanks for video and your thoughts.
Your amazing phil keep doing what u do cuz its pretty good cant wait for the new album the way Whitechapel has evolved is amazing
Phil how does it fell knowing you've changed a fans life for the better with your music
What do you listen to? Anything like secrets, blessthefall, thy art is murder, five finger death punch, acdc. What type mostly. I love all of them. Saw you live with Asking Alexandria you were awesome
***** maybe thy art
cant wait to see you at Warped tour Aug 7th and Ozzfest Meets Knotfest
Dude! Iv always kinda listened to you guys and I just recently started going throw a crazy metal faze and I just can't stop listening to your music and learning your songs!! Love your band. Much hype! Sick as fuck!!
Miss your videos man!
Good shit bro
I got a question, what is your favorite lyrical theme to write about
I adore Whitechapel, but he says he hates when people cut off a sentence, then put the last word at the start of the next bar. He does exactly that in the chorus for "The Saw Is The Law"......
Dude?
I think your overthinking what he said
What bands do you usually listen to on tour other than the bands you are currently touring with?
I wait forward your new album Our Endless War, but the song named The Saw Is The Law is very good and very badass, the lyrics from this are inspired from reality :D:D
When did decide to become a full time musician? What sacrifices did you have to make to insure you could do music for a guaranteed living? Thanks man! Keep up the videos on RUclips, many of us fans LOVE them!
Drinking game: Every time Phil says "things of that nature" take a shot ;P
Only took one shot haha funny though
Is that why "Death Becomes Him" is an instrumental? It almost seems impossible to match lyrics up with that.
you should post these dayly and just vlog on what your up to and what the band is up to
What do you think about all the chug guitar and drums in metal these days. I think that every band these days sound the same. I love whitechapel because you have awesome sounds and its brutal and fast and its new material on every album.
When I was in a band, I did the same thing, always wrote lyrics when the song was instrumental was complete.
And I think as far as I can remember, I also didn’t end mid sentence then pick it up on the next riff or bar.
It was a good sounding band, I was proud of myself but the problem with it was the members, they were just assholes haha.
Would you ever consider playing a local show in either knoxville or chattanooga?
I do the same
I understand you don't listen to metal because it's kind of asphyxiated you taken you're surrounded by it. But with that said, how do you get the inspiration to write metal lyrics?
if possible in the future can you possibly make an album with another group maybe under the same genre as you guys
How do you warm up? Have you ever overpracticed?
You should have your guitarists explain how they write their riffs
does Whitechapel ever plan to play on Warped Tour again?
Do you mind when people call Whitechapel Deathcore?
it is their genre so probably not lol
I got one:
Do you have any tips for high screams?
Just a question Phil. What happens if you come up with REALLY BADASS AMAZING LYRICS to no music? How would you incorporate that into a song?
Quick question - Is there going to be a Whitechapel DVD anytime soon? (Concert DVD) - Martin.
Just curious, what is a good setup for vocal equipment? The stuff I have sounds weak and bad
I agree. I really hate that in a song. Kind of reminds me of freestyling battles lol
I asked you on twitter to do this when you asked us what sort of videos we wanted :)
you asked Phlip Bozamn too ?
Antonius Angelus
both of them pls
Hahaha I recognised you because of your profile pic, it was totally hazardous. Y u do dis 2 mi Phlip...
Antonius Angelus
ahahah that's me! lol fak u phlip
Antonius Angelus
You will never fuck again... dun dun dun dun dun digidigidigidigi di dah dun dudun
Phil, you seem like such a nice guy. Hopefully I'm privileged enough to meet you someday!
What motivates you, before going on stage?
omfg !! background song?
I love you Phil
will alex, ben, and zach ever come together to make a tab book?
U said in an earlier video that u played guitar for a little while. With that being said, have u ever written any parts to any whitechapel songs, guitar-wise?
Do you believe that covers can help you grow as a musician?
When you are on stage how do you remember the lyrics?
Well I would think it's just like listening to your favorite song over and over . Eventually you'll have listened to it so much you'll randomly be singing it without realizing . Or at least that happens to me everyday at school .
+Darkside. Of Justice It's even more than that, usually when you write a lyric/poem/story, that text probably has sentimental meaning
+Gabrol I know that but majority of people can't make something like that FIRST time . That requires practice and lots of thinking .
Practice and usual when you write something yourself and practice it it's easier to remember whats hard is listening for your q it's harder to because a lot of shit is going on drums guitar etc happening pretty fast usually
He wrote them
***** Speaking of fast vocals, how do you view the talents of Fronzak from Attila? You can be discreet about it too, avoiding any offense that could be taken.
If you could start over. What genera would u choose
Any advice for upcoming death metal or deathcore bands?
A lot of times when I'm writing lyrics, ill write a chorus and maybe a verse to go with it, then ill hear a guitar riff in my head and sit down an figure out how to play it. Idk. Its always worked better for me than trying to listen to the song and come up with a theme from there. But that's just me.
Why do you choose the lyrical themes you write about?
because its death metal?
brodyschell *deathcore
D:
brodyschell some death metal doesn't share those themes.
There's Christian death metal, a vegetarian death metal band etc.
brodyschell
It's Deathcore, not death metal.
Vycrance Why the fuck does everyone feel the need to label music?
Phil, how do you prep your voice before a performance??
P.S. when are you coming to FL??
Got a question for ya Phil. Would love to hear your answer either in the form of a video or through a comment/message. Doesn't matter. I was just wondering, do you play any instruments? If so, what do you play and does any material you come up with make it into a Whitechapel song? Horns up \m/
Have you ever considered working on a different genre of music besides metal?
How big was your gauges?? I was always curious
Can you recommend anything to help me get better at doing fast vocals? This is something i really struggle with.
Hey Phil, I'd like to get in touch with you about guest vocals on my bands record.
Do you have an email I can reach you at?
Hello Phil !, I am a big fan of you and your great band, and I want to tell you that your voice is AMAZING and very POWERFUL. I give you all respect, and your band WHITECHAPEL rules the world of deathcore bands. You are a very good huy \m/\m/.
Wanna help me write a song
How did you get into whitechapel?
Im a huge fan and i really want to know :)
That's cool that you listen to the music before you come up with your lyrics. I've always appreciated the lyrics cause of the phrasing and, the theme I guess I would say. I've always wondered how your such a chill Dude but your lyrics are fucking brutal and intense. For example somatically incorrect from 0:19 to 0:38 is fucking hatred and wanted to know where that stuff comes from.
With a pen? or pencil? :P
A feather pen
What is you're ps4 name
Sorry for commenting on an old video... Do you think highly of using rhyme schemes at all or is it all free form?
Play some ghosts :D
How do you choose where you play and what venues you play at in a city?
I think his band manager picks where they tour and what venues they go to.
slayer1561 Well they better pick the city of PHILadelphia
He answered that in another Q&A
its the same way that chimaira does it!
I usually hear a beat in my head and then I start writing since I'm not in band I don't have the blessing of having to write to music made by a band
He should make video showing us his car.. .lol
I always thought gang shouts were awesome in choruses or in just one verse.
so i scream for a band and i do it from my diaphragm but im scared cause the back of my throat has purple veins bulging but the throat is a muscle so could it be like other muscles in the body where the veins bulge or am i screaming wrong?
I know your post was from 2 months ago. But, if your screaming is causing you pain at all you are probably doing it very wrong. Its normal however to have some discomfort if your doing it a lot at a time. But if its causing pain, you are stressing it too much. And that diaphragm bullshit isn't true either. Just find an equilibrium in your voice where you can produce a good scream but don't stress your cords. One thing I noticed when I started screaming years and years ago is that I couldn't do it well and it hurt every time I did it. Also I couldn't get that guttural sound either. That's because you need to break in your vocal cords kinda like you break in new shoes. They need to get used to that new vibration and strain. So either 1. You are doing it the wrong way or 2. You might just be starting out? I'm not sure. It took me 3 months to break in my vocal cords to make it work.
Thanks. Yeah I'm figuring it out more. What was happening was that my city was too cold and my bed was right next to the window and I'm a mouth breather so I'd scream and jam and it'd be fine but then I'd wake up and my throat would hurt cause of the cold
So....you are not a fan of Between the Buried and Me?
Had he ever answer in youtube comments?
Phill Bozeman, can I interview you.I'd really like to understand the origin of the lyrics, who inspired you.
Okay but....Lyrics don’t need to be grammatically correct lol.
It sucks
Would you ever write a concept album? And what's your thoughts on concept albums?
The Somatic Defilement is a concept album, about Jack The Ripper. Their very first album.
Django Moore Really? Makes more sense now that you've told me that haha. Cheers man! Can't stop listenin to that album lately. Articulo Mortis. Just fuck.
Chris Quigley yeah man, great album. I personally like Alone In The Morgue the best, a shame they never play it live, I saw them a month ago with Gwar, and all they played off of Somatic was Vicer Exciser.
Im big on how bands end there sentences and it ruins a good band... That's why i love you guys...very mature sound
