Shanks has stated that he "bet" his arm on the new era, which I guess means he willingly let the sea king eat his arm, with the idea that it'd make Luffy realize that the sea is dangerous and postpone his departure until he was older and stronger. Maybe if he'd come out completely unscathed Luffy would have kept insisting he take him along, or even stow away in his ship, and become a pirate way earlier than Shanks thought he should.
EDIT: to clarify, I know that Shanks losing his arm was an editor's idea. What I'm saying is only a retroactive explanation for what does indeed feel like an inconsistency given today's power levels.

    - Alvida was probably just similar enough to Luffy to lack foresight on her sea voyages. So a nerd like Koby was a massive stroke of luck.
    - Roger Pirates. Two possibilities.
    1) A vast amount of the group just hadn't physically been in the Grand Line or on the crew long enough to see Devil Fruits themselves.

10:40 Shanks and Buggy were once equals as well and Oda stated that Buggy became weak and lazy while Shanks kept training which is why they have such a gap in power and that it could also have been the other way around if their situations had been inverted.
Arlong did the same by settling in the weakest sea.
Moreover, Jinbei was consistently shown to be stronger than Arlong as he defeated Rear-Admiral Strawberry who should be somewhat relative in power to pre-timeskip X Drake while Arlong would never be able to defeat a decent Captain like pre-timeskip Smoker and Hina or post-timeskip Coby and Tashigi who are 2 ranks below Rear-Admiral.
In my opinion the only Captain he would be able to defeat is Morgan.
So this may just be a misconception from East Blue inhabitants due to the fact that Jinbei and Arlong are the (two) most prominent figures of the Sun Pirates being Fisher Tiger.
Also, if Jinbei was chosen as a Warlord instead of Arlong then this had to mean he was inevitably more powerful than him no matter what Yosaku said.

The point of Kuro's plan was to retire from piracy entirely and live a comfortable, peaceful life. The three years of servitude was to endear the butler Klahadore to the townsfolk and make himself a respected fixture of Syrup Village. Hypnotizing Kaya to write the will had to wait until Klahadore was well known and liked, so nobody would question that she left her fortune to him. The pirate raid was a way to kill Kaya without raising suspicion that she was being targeted specifically. And the killing of his own crew was to remove any loose end that could potentially link back to his past as a pirate.
It's insanely convoluted, yes, but it makes sense from a logistical standpoint.

I think with Sanji's case it was because the manual just listed the types and their abilities, not the weakness because it was usually common knowledge to those who already knew about devil fruits. All he knew was that it comes with a curse, but he didn't know what exactly. The more likely reason is that, as he said, he wasn't interested in it. My own take is that Sanji's "why didn't you tell me sooner?!" came from a place of (subconsciously) not *wanting* to believe that Devil Fruits took away your swimming ability until he had literally no other choice. Luffy was the first proof he had that Devil Fruits were real at all - but that doesn't mean he had to believe *everything* in the book from his childhood (which he probably read in-between bits of _Liar Noland_) was true, and who among us hasn't fantasized about having our cake and eating it too, every once in a while?
The matter-of-fact way he discusses it later on, with Absalom, happened months after he met Luffy and got used to Devil Fruits; hence his "Meh, I was never *really* that interested in them!" air about the whole thing.

8:30 Kuro also said that when he was thrown off his ship on the cost he spent several days wandering and starving before finding the village except there are only two places where a ship could accost and according to Usopp it would only take 3 minutes to go from one shore to the other and we even see Luffy going the wrong way and ending up at Syrop Village in a bit more than 3 minutes (it took him the same time as it took Usopp to run from one shore to the other except he left before him).
So if it only takes about 3 minutes for Luffy to run from the shore to the village it's incomprehensible for Kuro to have spent days traveling the same path.
Assuming that Kuro spent 2 days traveling from the shore to the village, that he slept 12 hours a day due to extreme fatigue and that he walked at a pace of 1 km/h it means that there would be a distance of 24 km between the shore and the village which means that for Luffy to reach it in 3 minutes he would have to be running at a constant speed of 480 km/h over 24 km and that's just not possible 😂

    • @xcalixus
      @xcalixus 3 года назад

@@xcalixus well, Kuro did say that the people of the ship he was working on “marooned him here”.
Also, Luffy's traveling speed pre-timeskip can pretty consistently be calculated around 130 km/h both from sprinting alongside Kaloo who is stated to be faster than a cheetah and from running from Cricket's house to Mocktown and back in about 3 hours going South while it took the Merry 3 days to go from Mocktown to Cricket's house going North even though Luffy's path was was much longer (putting him at 128 km/h) which would in fact make Jaya a pretty big island which is kind of corroborated by Luffy, Usopp and Sanji needing nearly a full day to go from one end of Skypiea to the other despite days lasting longer in the sky.
We can also estimate Usopp and Brook's speed and we know Luffy is in between them with Nami and Usopp having speeds of 55 km/h and 60 km/h as both can outrun a sabertooth tiger (50 km/h) while Brook would have a speed of 160 km/h if we consider the fact that he had the same speed as Usopp when he was alive but now only has 14% of his initial mass remaining making him much faster.
So basically Luffy can't run at a speed of 480 km/h on 24 km but could run at +130 km/h on 460 km if he didn't have to carry the gold.

He spent 3 years to gain the trust of the people, because had he just had jango hypnotize Kaia off the bat, the village would have been like hmm something’s fishy here why would Kaia give her vast fortune to this random mf. He also lied to his crew and said they would gain money from the raiding of the village and from Kaia’s house but in reality he wanted to create a pirate problem long enough to where the death of Kaia wouldn’t be suspicious and could be blamed on them but also he was gonna kill the crew anyway because he wanted to retire and never get caught, his plan never included killing all the townsfolk. Probably out of fear of the Marines coming by one day.

I just think “sacrificing arm for next gen” is a dumb answer.
    It’s outright silly tbh.
Like… he didn’t need to lose his arm to the giant scary sea monster to impart the “sea is dangerous” wisdom.

The way I like to think of the Shanks arm situation: we see countless times the cliche of someone being saved at the last second, with no injuries. Well, it's just that this time, Shanks was a tiny bit later than the cliche, with no choice but to sacrifice the ol' arm, haki be damned. I also "heard" that an editor told Oda to make him lose an arm, so there's that.

the fact that shanks lost his arm to the lord of the coast will never sit well with me, it was amazing when I first watched it but after learning more about Shanks just makes it terribly unbelievable. And can we please talk about how it looked like early on even Oda was not entirely sure how Devil Fruits worked

You missed the Elephant in the room
-The very first episodes when Higuma threw luffy in the sea,, Luffy was shown to be able to thread a little bit instead of sinking immediately like an anchor

  • @Poet482

Though a bit lame, most all of these things make sense. For example, Sanji just forgot about that devil fruit users sink in the moment due to all of the craziness going on at the time. Actually feels like a pretty human thing to do, especially when you likely just witnessed it in person for the first time.
Yes, a lot of these are intuitive. Just because Shanks is really strong doesn't mean he wasn't tired out from swimming all the way out there to get to Luffy. Though it is strange that Luffy didn't immediately sink when the guy kicked him off. He even wore a shirt that said "anchor" lol. Early minor things that don't ruin scenes like this, thankfully, as the important thing is that they're still thematically consistent.

There is one thing that I always wondered about the east blue saga. How does the Baratie makes enough money? It doesn't seem like they would see a lot of traffic and running a restaurant ship seems quite expensive.

Luffy and Usopp just happened to be there at the same time and conviniently heard everything that Kuro said.

To be honest that marine meeting was called to discuss the event where son of the leader of the Revolutionary Army was fighting against former Sun Pirates. I don't think RA was active in the East Blue so I would say that meeting was justified.

  • @stephenjames2159

From a military administrative aspect it makes sense to discuss Luffy's and Arlong's interactions in east blue during a senior level meeting because of the role a marine captain played in it not unlike the fort hood report for the us army.
Public trust is a very important thing for an all volunteer force because it brings in new recuits and when your current force can only take one yonko recruiting becomes a priority.

I feel that the Netflix One Piece live action is in a very unique position of opportunity here. This may sound blasphemous, but really, they have the opportunity to surpass any adaptation of One Piece ever. Removing these flaws, they could have a perfect show with all the right setup and payoffs. They could, in theory, stray from the source material, while not straying from the story and its soul. If they pull it off, the enigma that "One Piece is not mainstream" would vanish, and One Piece would gain the recognition it deserves, that is, that of being one of the greatest adventure tales (if not the greatest) ever put to pages.
