Foods to AVOID while on Prednisone - Dr. Megan the Prednisone Pharmacist. You don't have to suffer on prednisone without hope. 👇
Sometimes it feels like no matter what we eat while on prednisone, we will gain weight.
But that's not true.
Some foods are worse than others for people taking prednisone.
Some foods are...
dare I say it...
practically poisonous for prednisone patients. (That's a lot of P's!)
Find out one surprising food group NOT on this list!
This content discusses how weight gain can be a side effect of Prednisone and then offers ways to avoid such weight gain by avoiding certain foods, such as simple sugars, white flour, and processed snacks. Additionally, it is important to limit caffeine and alcohol, which can lead to bone loss. However, dietary fat should not be avoided as it does not cause weight gain.
Chapters:
00:00 - 07:13 Avoiding Weight Gain While on Prednisone: An Overview for Pharmacists
Key Takeaways
1. Choosing healthy foods over processed alternatives can have positive effects on weight gain.
2. Weight gain induced by Prednisone can be reduced with a healthy diet.
3. Limiting caffeine and alcohol can help to preserve bone health.
4. Omitting dietary fat does not help to prevent weight gain.

Hai madam taking tablet with breakfast or after breakfast tel me please
I'm taking tablet imediatly after breakfast it's good or bad
After breakfast is okay. The best time is first thing in the morning with food.
Dr Megan I tried to order thd supplements and it says it didn’t find shipping for my town in NY 😞

You say "suffer on prednisone"...
I was bed ridden and wheelchair bound before prednisone... needing a caregiver for activities of daily living.
On prednisone, I wake freash each day, stretch, exercise, shower, dress and go out independently.
I guess perspective matters?
Thank you for sharing this perspective!! Prednisone is both a Miracle and Miserable, depending on your situation. It was both for me and I’m glad you’re enjoying the Miracle side!
I'm on a Mediterranean diet for life so hopefully this will help with not gaining weight. I'm also taking VIT D3, Calcium, Zinc, Magnesium and Potassium while on Prednisone 4mg, 6 days, tapered
thank you for all of this information!
Basically a nice plate of ice chips will be ideal.
Ha Ha!!! That's kind of a hilarious way of summarizing it!
Yes it’s good to chew on ice when you’re craving food & you’re not really hungry
Ice does taste really good in the warm weather months, for me anyways! 😅
@@alee6966 chewing ice is bad for your teeth

Excellent. Thank you.
I've just started on this steroid due to U Colitis. I wasn't told much info on it so really glad to find your channel. Thank you for providing so much info..going through your videos is really helpful.
You’re welcome!
Thank you
Thank you so much for this information. I had a reaction to a bee sting and I was put on this medicine for only about 5 days but it is trying to cause havoc on the weight I have already lost. I'm into taking natural things so I will work on eating the right things as you suggested. I'm also taking chromium picolinate to help with the sugar cravings and to curve my appetite.
Great video!
Thanks, Diane! What would you like to see more of?
Thx Doc. Great video!!!
Glad you liked it!
thanks
Watermelon is also very good anti-inflammatory. I eat kiwi and blueberries as well but I need to eat them more consistently.
Yum! Fresh fruits are important
Awesome, im on all meat diet and just got prescribed this. Glad to know it wont hinder progress

Thanks, I have just started "again" on Prednisone to avoid some other medications that has really awful side effects and I was wondering what could I do to avoid more damage to my body. Thanks for this information, I really apreciated. Cheers.

So i recently just started taking predniosone (10MG tapered) for an inflammation problem i have from my chronic sinusitis for 9 days. While im taking predniosone, can i still consume things with protein? Such as a protein shake? I go to the gym so it will feel strange for me not to take my daily protein shake 😅. Also will i be able to slowly eat foods with sodium and sugar arter finishing the 9 days? Or will i have to wait for the predniosone to fully wear off before resuming to eat those things.
I’m 14, and on 40mg of prednisone right now and gained like 20 pounds in a month. I can’t eat potassium and can’t have salt because of my kidneys, I’m also allergic to fruit. Literally all that’s left is carbs!!! And the cravings are crazy! So i just eat chicken everyday but I’m so tired of eating it. Also snacks just don’t exist. There’s no snack that I’ve found that has a decent serving size that’s low in everything. And the moon face is horrible!
Oh my goodness--that is so tricky with all those limitations! I can only imagine how much you must be sick of chicken.
hi, im 15 and my dose is now lowered to 40 mg i was wondering if you are still on prednisone and if you’re moon face and anyother side effects ever went away. prednisone is seriously so damaging to my mental health!!!
Ig it was a good decision when I picked humira instead of predisone, I’m REALLY addicted to sugar
You're right. Sugar isn't a good combo with prednisone!
What about Stevia in moderation? How do you wean yourself off Prednisone? I m having so much pain at 4 milligrams. I started at 30mg. I’ve been taking Prednisone for a year and a half. Any suggestions?
Hello! I think if you're going to use a sweetener, Stevia is a good choice. Step 1 is avoiding all processed foods, especially those which contain high fructose corn syrup. Avoiding as many refined sweets as possible is critical for people on prednisone.
Regarding your pain, I understand. It's so tough getting off prednisone for some people. Have you had your cortisol levels checked? Have you talked to your doctor about this pain? It might be that you're suffering adrenal insufficiency when you decrease your dose below 5 mg. This is a tough stage you're in!
Awesome, I've gained over 3 stone in weight while on Prednisolone (10 months on 20mg) due to Ulcerative Colitis - my intestines can only tolerate white bread, white rice and potatoes :(
UC is so tough. You feel miserable and can only tolerate certain foods. So sorry!
How long does it take for 5mg prednisone to start working against tonsillitis? I’m also taking 2 augmetin antibiotic
It usually works pretty quickly. Within a day or so.
not working for me after 4 days
Dr Megan, after 20 days of 40 mg (2 x 20 mg ) daily prednisone(diff drs in the group prescribed 5 days at a time and each would add another 5 days after the previous Ds RX ended because my COVID wasn’t getting better on anything g they were prescribing -ZPAC, Doxycycline, and the Prednisone ) one of the Drs is tapering me , only because I asked him to …10mg x3 for 3days;10mgX2 for 3 days;10mg x1 for 3 days. This seems crazy to me.I have other conditions like Ehlers Danlos Syndrome,Asthma,Osteoarthritis & Fibromyalgia. This is bound to flare it all up 🤦♀️Dr Megan , is there any way you forsee this taper schedule turning out alright ? Please advise.I have an appt tomorrow prescribing Dr of week #2 to speak up and ask for a longer taper but I get the feeling he will say no.Thank you 🙏
Hello Renee, please email me or leave your message here: prednisonepharmacist.com/
Aw man, I'm a student on preds, and so many of the foods you listed I consume often since they're so cheap and bulky. Not to mention I crave excessive quantities of pasta which doesn't help 😩😩
Oh man! That’s rough! It’s a conundrum that often the “easy and cheap” turns out to be complicated and expensive!
Potatoes are pretty cheap and filling... and not too bad for people on prednisone if combined with non-salty toppings.
Thank you...what about sea salt or himalaya salt or pink salt ...we can used them or no.
If it's made from sodium, that's the problem. Sodium chloride is the main ingredient in sea salt, himalayan and pink salt, so that's what we need to avoid. "Nu-Salt" is an alternative made from potassium instead of sodium.
Dr. Megan - Prednisone Pharmacist Thank you
what about Organic Pure Maple Syrup?
It’s still sugar so avoid or use very sparingly while on pred
What about baked potatoes? Also, can whole grains in small amounts be okay?
Yes, I think whole grains and baked potatoes are fine. The big concerns are the processed sugars.
I have gout for 40 years and when I get an attack steroids are the only thing that will kill the attack . Also pain killers like percocet. I can't not take steroids. Impossible
I hear ya. Steroids are complete miracles, so I’m glad they have helped you cope. It’s all about making sure the benefits outweigh the risks. Sounds like in your case they do.
My card does not show the days listed in it..its just a card with pills on it. How do I hold the card to start taking them...vertically or horizontally?? Either way they are starting at 6 pills & ending in 1. Are alll the pills exactly the same so that the way I start the pills dosent matter?
+susan millican it’s usually horizontal but call your pharmacy if you have any questions.
Yes they should all be the same, so yes take 6 the first day and end with 1.
What about citrus? I feel dizzy after having grapfruit, lemon, or, a simple orange slice. Whats up with that? Tapering off this crap ...i just hate it here
Yikes! Sorry to hear that. I haven’t heard of that reaction before. As far as I know, citrus is good for you, especially since it can provide nutrients like vitamin C which prednisone depletes.
Hi so i’m on 50mg of pred been on on and off for a year because of auto immune disease. Is it ok for me to take carbo gain which contains maltadextrose to gain weight its like 70g of carbs for half a cup which is the dose. Would that up my blood sugar and be negative for my health like you said? On the label it says its a complex carb
Hmm.. that's a tough question. You've got to balance what your priority is: gain or blood sugar control. It would probably up your blood sugar. Probably not the best option for someone on pred.
I would avoid that. You don’t want to end up with diabetes.
how bad is it to have a day where i eat food with the bad sugar and carbs like for a family event, i just feel so bad that i just constantly dont want to eat out due to me being on prednisone
You don’t have to be perfect. Doing well with your diet most of the time is good. Finding the balance between family and health choices is tricky, right?
@@PrednisonePharmacist yeah. ive been pretty good with my diet but im on 20mg 2 times a day and i was on 40mg 2 times a day and its been about 1 month and a half and im so scared of getting diabetes from the prednisone.. what do i tell my doctor
??? Is it safe to eat Jenny Craig food while taking prednisone?
Yep!
You have to be careful though. Whole grains are prebiotics. We should also take a probiotic like Bio-K.
You need a really good probiotic while on prednisone. Says so right on the label.
How many diets(vegetable and fruit ) are use to reduce the weight during use of prednsolone i.e moon face and abdominal fats
Check out my Ultimate Diet Review for an answer: ruclips.net/video/gllrIwxwSaQ/видео.html
Is it okay to have fruit? Like plums, grapes, kiwi, or is there too much sugar in them?
I personally think that it depends on your dose and disease, but for most people, whole foods that include sugar should be okay. For some, they may be too sugary. To me, it seems most important to cut out all refined sugars (man made) while on prednisone.
@@PrednisonePharmacist thanks for the reply!!
Hi there doc I been on prednisone for ten months for RA I have my arthritis under control now thank god. but around 8 months ago I started having tinnitus on my left ear and its getting louder. can you tell me if this can be couse by prednisone or my methrotraxe? id it's a common side effect could this be reverse bu stoping the medications? I already made my appointment with my ENT but I can't deal with no sleep I fell is gonna affect my RA. PLEASE HELP !!!!!
+AL'mighty Jr that sounds terrible. Tinnitus is such a miserable thing because no one else can tell how you feel.
My ultimate list of prednisone side effects gathered from five different drug databases does not include tinnitus. So I think it’s pretty unlikely that prednisone caused it.
It could be the methotrexate but is quite rare.
Often side effects can be reversed by stopping meds. But this is so rare, it’s hard to predict.
There’s even a study in which they used methotrexate to help stop tinnitus. So... sounds like a mystery to me. It could be the methotrexate or it could not be... either way.
I wish this was more clear-cut and easy to say across the internet! I’m so sorry you are suffering!
Glad I’m not a sweet tooth or salt & I don’t drink alcohol.
do you have any advice to help with moon face?? cause i have changed my diet (although it was already pretty healthy since i hate sodas ect but i do love fast food...that i used to eat twice a month or more) anyway i mannaged to stabilized my weight :) on prednisone now that i'm down at 35g a day but my face looks super puffy and round... with a double chin (i used to have a verry skinny face) it looks out of proportion compared to my body wich is thinner i hate it i only want the moonface to go away... i only eat 1 or maximum 3 teaspoons of fructose a day , no candy no soda no chocolate no chips no salt no bread ect... i allow myself to a cheat day once or twice a month (i don't go crazy though maybe macdonalds fries and nuggets or kfc without the sodas) but i'm quite happy with my body it's really the moonface i struggle with... it depresses me.. i feel trapped like it's not me i see in the mirror...
Hello Aida, I hear ya, not recognizing yourself in the mirror. It looks like you've already made a lot of important lifestyle changes to minimize the weight gain and moon face. Unfortunately the only real "cure" for moon face is lowering the dose. Moon face gets rounder the higher the dose, and smaller the lower the dose. You probably NEED the prednisone for some good reason, so at this point it's best to give yourself grace and realize this too shall pass. I'm sorry if that's not what you were hoping to hear!
@@PrednisonePharmacist i was expecting that kind of answear don't worry :) thanks anyway i take prednisone bcause i have auto inmune hepatitis :/ i'm 19 so it's really unexpected all of a sudden to have an illness show up out of no where and having to change everything :( i really hate it... but oh well that's life i guess there's always worst than yourself... i guess i'll just have a verry chubby face for a while :/
Wish I had a moon face, I have lost so much weight it is scary! 2 kilograms over 5 months and the worst thing is I was way too skinny before I developed PMR! I now have no appetite and no desire for food and I continue to shrink! Although I have to say that stress does affect my weight bigtime and I just do not want to eat after taking preds. After being started on prednisilone and my PMR seriously improved my sister was diagnosed with cancer and died almost two weeks ago. It was a roller coaster of extreem psychological and above all psychological pain. I find it hard to sleep and never know what tomorrow is going to bring! It has brought me to my knees! I dont want to die, I just want to put some weight on and get on with my life!
@@aidak1512Did you find any remedy for your moon face? I am skinny & underweight 46kgs post 10 years of kidney transplant but my face is so chubby since 2020 and I am only on 5mg of steroids daily.
I only see my face & cannot recognize myself and don't feel like eating anything which is making me more physically anaemic. I get taunts for my skinny body but again all I see is my chubby face! Its so tormenting!
Chicken and broccoli?
Do we need to taper off the drug if used for just one week
Usually not if only one week. But listen to your body.
And follow your doctor’s instructions.
Sound!!!
I suffer from ttp but with the grace of God and good doctors I am cured :) I’ve been on prednisone for a month and some weeks now and it’s been a roller coaster but luckily i have been getting better and my doctor has been lowering my dosage every five days I use to be on 4 pills now I’m on half a pill I am so grateful and have been doing everything in my power to stay positive I’ve seen progress in my face but not enough to where I would like but it’s ok. I am a living testimony that it does get better you can beat prednisone’s ass you are a survivor! I pray that my face goes down in the next couple of weeks because it has taken a toll on my self esteem but I’m fighting back !

So the only thing we can consume while on prednisone is fatty meat and water?! 🤣 im so doomed😥 I'm at 60 mg for a week then I start tapering 40 for a week then 20 for a week and so forth. I have a rare eye disease and have inflammation at times. This is that time😭

Why is the sound quality so low?
Ha! This was one of my first videos and that day my webcam and mic weren’t working. So I had to use just my phone.
Strange that this is one of my most popular videos even though it’s one of the lowest production quality!
Ketogenic even carnivore diet is okay?
Many people on prednisone do very well on keto. It is something you should check with your doctor.
Thank you for your reply.
I've never been on corticoids but I've had stiff levels of stress related weight gain secondary to mood swings since age 9. Now 19. Cutting the weight down and fixing the mood swings required me to go on a ketogenic diet aged 17 and eating a LOT of salt - bad for someone on corticoids but I surmise it may've reduced my endogenous cortisol (which is used to hold onto salt).
The lost bone should come back if you resistance exercise once off corticoid. IANADTINMA
+Ellenor Malik glad to hear keto worked for you. Yes most people on prednisone need to avoid salt but some need it, like those with adrenal insufficiency.
@@PrednisonePharmacist Have you found that some supraphysiological corticoid patients do need to increase the salt level? Apologies if you answered, the thing you said in your reply was unclear
+Ellenor Malik yes, combination of salt and cortisol imbalance can happen. Sorry for the unclear answer. This is definitely something you can have tested and work with a doctor to determine.
@PrednisonePharmacist what test(s) would one ask for here?
Just eat a fruit and vegetables diet. Fish chicken and turkey. Tuna fish.
Good strategy.
Less fruits tho as those have alot of sugar
Yep skip the fruit
Well ive also seen it recommended to limit Fat intake from any source, healthy or not. This includes Avocado, Olive oil etc
This really limits a huge amount of food.
I can understand limiting processed foods, and even high fructose fruit but to start limiting things like Avocado (which is super low sugar, high in potassium and higher fat). Where are people to actually get daily requirement of Calories to actually function? Or even build muscle? You cant just waste away.
This is absolutely ridiculous. So you compose meals low in sugar (easy, just eat salads/mostly vegetables) and then low in Fat (getting harder) AND stick strictly to 2,500 calories) which is an estimated value for a mans calorie intake.
This does not leave you much ways to even retain muscle.
And what happens if the person is actually already thin, including having little visceral fat at all. What happens in that case?
I don’t recommend avoiding all the oils. I avoid canola oil and other super trans-fat containing oils. I love avocado and olive oil.
I don’t recommend eating low fat.
Plz speak a little loader thanks you are great
Thanks for the feedback. This was one of my earlier videos and I was still learning how to make them. I've got a mic now!
@@PrednisonePharmacist Okay thanks, I find your video helpful my wife recently started taking prednisone and it causes her a lot of side effects.
Call me crazy, my gramma has eaten bread.
Me too! But while on prednisone, if you want to slow the side effects, you need to make some sacrifices.
I have repeatedly refused to take prednisone pills or corticosteroid injections when doctors prescribe it (usually for allergies or suspected allergic reactions.) Synthetic cortisol which is exactly what those medications are don't just suppress allergies. They suppress the entire immune system. They can also cause elevated insulin levels and weight gain which is harmful if you have atherosclerosis as I do.
That’s for sure. Only take it if the alternative is worse!
It takes weeks for the suppression to kick in. A short term pulse here and there for an occasional flare up won’t cause any harm.
Some are better off dead on Dexa- pred-
