I heard back in the day the street version made close to 1000hp, and that to meet racing rules they detuned to 750hp in order to be allowed to race. Not sure if that is correct, I believe I have an old car magazine somewhere with the info in it. Still extremely underrated though. And in my opinion, one of the most beautiful cars ever built! ❤❤
For the Saleen probably because it was very unreliable. The ones running in the european GT1 championship had so many problems. Really a shame as it is such a handsome car with a great soundtrack. When the Viper's days were numbered and the Saleen came i was really exited. And the one in this livery that ran the ALMS actually made me look in to the ALMS series :D
I remember seeing this car race in 2005 at Laguna Seca during the ALMS series. Makes me happy to see the car again, like I'm back in "05. Thanks for this!
Country of origin was never the issue. It's just that small independent brands to get that kind of worldwide attention. Especially when they're on-hit wonders. Well, at least Le Mans and FIA GT fans understand how much of an icon this is.
@@Pandamasque Saleen was not unknown at the time. Especially in America. What killed it was reliability for the price. Which Italians get a full pass for and Brits get a pass sometimes.
Motortrend tested the 750HP Twin Turbo street version back in the early 2000s... It ran the 1/4 in 10.2 seconds at 148MPH... with a manual transmission, lol.

The early Vipers might be even more undervalued than the S7. Viper won GT2 World Championship and Lemans. Sweeping WSCC all but one race. Legendary American cars no doubt!
This car was a thorn in the C5R and C6R's side and part of the reason it stopped racing is that Saleen couldn't make the number of cars required but race LeMans anyway.
What a beautiful looking AND sounding machine. Truly a shame there wasn't more interest/investment into this cars future. One of my all time dream "poster" cars.
looking at some of the driver names on the roof i saw terry borcheller. funny, i meet him at an autograph session prior to the grand am grand prix of miami circa 2006. i aked him what's the best race car you've ever driven. with zero hesitation he said "Saleen S7R"
Need this car in modern racing games the only one to have it is The Crew and thats a damn shame as they have quite a few GT1,GT2,GT500 cars of the mid 2000's that no one has anymore
such a beautiful car! But why was the car 50 kg overweight for GTS/GT1 category? Why couldn't you reduce it's weight to a minimum of 1100kg? It's probably the main reason for it's limited competitiveness.
It's so beautiful and elegant that I kinda wish they put a modified V10 Triton engine in it instead. Honestly thought I would never say this about an american car. The 427 sound doesn't fit all that well.
I love Top Gear growing up, but I could tell they were cherry picking and omitting American and Japanese cars. I know BBC wanted them to show case British cars. But things like Saleen were never showcased.
One of the best looking American cars from the 2000s.
You can easily replace "from the 2000s" with "ever" 😉
Many people forget the SSC Ultimate Aero TT, which beat the Veyron's top speed record.
Why not best looking cars in general, why does america always need a disclaimer to give credit, i notice this is done subconsciously very often
For real. It's an actual successful American supercar design that I can be proud of, and in the form of a great race car too.
@@DesertStateInEUits true but the S7 looks slighty better
100% underrated. In 2000, the turbocharged street version was putting out 750 hp. I was always baffled as to why it never became a popular car.
Smug British orangutans thinking only Italians make super cars
Smug British orangutans couldn't admit Americans build great cars.

unknown brand. people tend to stick with what they know and signals heritage, like Ferrari, Porsche, Aston Martin, Jaguar, Chevrolet etc.
One of the best looking race cars ever. I wished more had been invested into it for racing.
I feel both Saleen & Panoz were underrated.

Absolutely! I wish the Panoz cars were still making that glorious sound around the track. Between those and the S7, it's hard to pick a favorite haha.
Mosler is underrated too
Precisely my thoughts. Panoz has long been a favorite of mine.

FIA GT legend, unforgettable sound
Lol. Country of origin absolutely matters. Europeans hate that Americans car build better cars cheaper.

Group GT1 had some great looking cars.
Beautiful , Just Beautiful !!! That is what a real car should sound like !!!
A masterpiece with glorious sound. 🤩🇺🇲
I got to see one thrown around Sonoma last year. Absolutely amazing.

What a sound and what a beautiful looking car! Always baffled me why they weren't more popular

This is one of the best videos you've made, well done.

The sound of that c6r starting near the beginning of the video is insane…..
A great car which I love to drive in racing games. I just did so recently in Midnight Club: Los Angeles.
Saeleen and the Cheetah are the two best sounding cars... Loved this video
Yes.
Always loved these.

How come a racecar has the best proportions of the midengine cars, that long rear overhangs makes it ballanced

Not a true 7 liter. They use 6.0 liter vette c6 engine. There are faster cars than this, which use the same layout.
This is obviously fake.
