Actually it's a very well thought out design. Apple didn't want to have any photos of their wireless mouse and keyboard to be taken "in situ" with cables attached, so they put the plug on the bottom. That way there would never be a photo of their mouse being used with a cord...

It isn't even that they want to sell you the solutions. Apple will not sell a solution to this because they don't want cables anymore, if it's not necessary. There image is that they are clean, so when someone posts there Setup there should not be a wire dangling from somewhere. That's pretty fucked up
