- I created this video, "Upcycling a vintage suitcase | How to paint a suitcase & apply transfers for cottagecore decor look" because of a challenge from Dionne Woods, the Turquoise Iris. I'm in her Creative Connection group and she challenged us to create something for ourselves. I had this vintage suitcase sitting in my office, that I had thrifted for $5.99. I have always enjoyed the cottagecore aesthetic, really anything with spring colors and flowers (especially sunflowers) and I'm in! Mixing and layering leftover Prima transfers is also something I love to do! I wanted to use it in my bathroom, to house all of my makeup and beauty products. I hope you enjoy my project. I would love to do more upcycling vintage suitcases, so if you would like to see more of these videos, let me know!

When my oldest sister graduated from college in about 1956, my parents gave her a set of matching blue samsonite luggage just like that case. Boy, did I feel that was classy! And we 5 girls used the hell out of that luggage over the next 20 years!! Nice job!💕
Oh, I can only imagine!! How cool!
I’m actually going to repaint a vintage train case and a vintage Sony micro tv case. It looks like a baby train case. I showed it in my most recent video. Bit some friends I could totally repaint it !!! This is giving me some good ideas.
I still use this case every time I travel by car. It sits in my bathroom and is used daily to hold my makeup, etc. I’m still just as in love with the finished product. I wish you luck on yours. I’ll go check out your channel now.
Love the little suitcase.
Thank you! I still carry it all the time.
Woah thanks for the video. I have this old suitcase that I really wanna reuse.
I’ve done it to a couple other since then. It’s so much fun and they come out beautifully!
That's Beautiful!😍😍😍🥰 Sunflowers are my favorite flower too.
I carry it all the time when I travel. I still live it.
I did enjoy this video. It was nice to hear you talk about how you started crafting and where you are today. I appreciate your talent and how you use it.
I have the sister one to that one, it is flat and I was given it from an antique place i worked for during 11th grade. It has gone everywhere with me, and it has been my hospital bag for all 4 of my children (35,28,26,23), now I look forward to giving it a new look. Thank you
That’s great! I use mine every day snd take it with me on every trip.
What kind of paint did you use?
I used Fusion Mineral Paint.
Very pretty!
Thank you @sandra Olson
Thanks for sharing the personal side.
My pleasure!
I love the suitcase. I have a blue one as well, so now I have an idea of what I can do with it now. I also lived in Hawaii 2007 to 2014(husband in Army/retired). Military wives share so much. Love you even more. Thank you so very much for sharing your talent.
Pearl Harbor has changed so much! I look back on those days fondly.
Thank you for sharing your talents! Love hearing your stories!
I still use this every single day. It’s one of my favorite belongings!
I would love it if you gave more information about the preparation and how to paint it. How long did it take to sit after painting it to use transfers?
Super cute! I love it!
Jeannine Harris thank you!! 🙏💕
‼️❤️Beautiful, I love what you did ❤️‼️
Thank you! This still sits on my bathroom counter and I adore looking at it every day.
Love this train case makeover!!
Where can I get these transfers?
We sell them at vintagebeedesign.com!
I have the exact same one of my mom in law and was looking to repair it... 😂
I love mine! I travel with it all the time!
So beautiful Melissa ❤
Thank you. Loved your storytelling also ❤
Thank you!!
Just picked up some old suit cases leather boxes type. Ran into your site in search to revamp them. I have a set of Samsonite luggage I got for my high school graduation class of '73, living in California. I have the same one, the small make up carrier in light brown. I live in New Zealand now. But I like the transfer stickers you used. I too am a Sun flower person. Great demo!🌻🌻
That sounds AMAZING! I love redoing old suitcases. I use this one all the time, and it’s still in great condition.
Beautiful❤
Thank you! I just took it with me when I travelled last week. It’s still just as pretty.
Absolutely beautiful. I found a train case at a yard sale a few years ago for $2. It’s in nice condition. You’ve inspired me to do something similar.
I still use this one on almost every single trip! It also holds all my makeup when I’m home. It just makes me happy!
Beautiful ❤
Thank you! I still use it all the time.
Lovely job! I have a green one just like yours, and I was wondering how you sanitized the inside fabric for safe use again?
I think I just washed it and sprayed with Lysol. Mine was pretty clean on the inside. I still use it almost every time I travel (via car)
Great idea for a feminine tool kit.
I hadn’t even thought of that. Love the idea!
I LOVE this ❤️❤️❤️ I meant to comment in the last video I watched. You said you were a grandma and you DO NOT look old enough to be a GMA! I'm almost 42 and I definitely look 60, but you don't look a day over 35 at the very most 😁
Well, I LOVE YOU! 💕😘 nope. I’m in my mid 50’s. My oldest granddaughter is from my son marrying a woman with a child, but I have 3 other grandchildren now!
the case your working on can you show me how the locks open after unlocking it
I’m not sure how to show you. If you want to send me a text, you can send to 904 466 …. 2093.
I just heard you say that your daughter's name is Paige! That's so awesome... I knew I liked you for more reason than one 😜
Haha. Yes. My son is John (named after his father, and his grandfather). My oldest daughter is Paige. My youngest is Lily. 💕
wonderful work, thank you for sharing it with us. please what color did they use? ordinary acrylic paint?
I used Fusion Mineral Paint. I believe the color was Raw Silk, as that’s my favorite. You can buy it at VintageBeeDesign.com
Thanks for the quick answer. I live in Croatia, but I will look for it, maybe you can buy that mineral paint here as well. thank you very much
I had a pet peacock as a child. Anyone that knows me knows that. My home is filled with peacocks. Some are gifts and some I have made.
That’s a unique pet! I’ve heard they are loud and mean. They roam freely in neighborhoods near where I live. I’m sure they aren’t that as a pet though.
Currently working on a redo of a case for my Mom. What is the best way to seal it when I'm done? It may see some real usage and I'd like to seal the paint well so it does not rub or scratch off easily. Thanks in advance for the direction!
I have used mine regularly for years. Cleaning it well, then using Fusion Mineral Paint (as it’s one of the most durable paints) were keys to getting a long lasting finish. I sealed mine with Wise Owl Matte poly, I believe. Fusion also has a great top coat.
Please suggest paint to do a train case … I have a family one I’d like to use for a tool case for scrapbooking
I prefer Fusion Mineral paint or Dixie Belle Silk Mineral. They have a built in top coat which makes them more durable. You can purchase either on our website VintageBeeDesign.com
It looks beautiful, you did a wonderful job!! What grit of sand paper did you use?
I almost always use 220 grit.
I painted a suitcase exactly like yours with a pink acrylic from dollar store. Let it dried overnight and decided I didn’t really like the color of the pink, so I went to Lowe’s and bought a pink that I really like. It was also an acrylic paint. This morning I went to put on a new coat of the new color and it just slid right off the first coat I put on and then you could see all pieces of the paint just gathering on the suitcase, so my question is what did I do wrong? I did clean it very well and I gently sanded it before hand so I have no clue what’s happening any advice?
My suitcase was leather, but some of them were plastic. Acrylic paint really doesn’t have the necessary ingredients to make it stick to plastic. You would need a primer, like Slick Stick, from Dixie Belle. Unfortunately, now you need to be sure that you’ve removed ALL of the previous paint, or anything you likely use will just come off, as the base is an acrylic.
If the case was leather, and not plastic, then a previous owner likely waxed or oiled the leather, making it repellent to most paints. You would need to use a cleaner, like mineral spirits, to remove any coating on it.
how do you open the case you were working on, i’ve tried sliding it, lifting it but afraid i’ll brake it trying to open it
Mine slides. If it’s rusty, which can happen, try squirting it with a small amount of WD40.
I have a sun damaged train case I want to refresh. How is the paint holding up after several months of use? Yours turned out so cute!
It’s perfect! I even take it on vacation and overnights. No issues whatsoever.
Do you seal the finished project ? Product you prefer?
Yes. I completely sealed it with Dixie Belle Satin .
None of the links work for the paint.
I apologize. This video is a couple years old. The links all should go to VintageBeeDesign.com now.
Where do I buy these sunflowers and possibly bee transfer sheets
They are on VintageBeeDesign.com This is the Sunflower Fields transfer.
Can I ask where you bought the roll of transfers? The link does not work.
Sorry. I’ll make sure to update.

Where do I buy rub ons? Sunflowers, bees
I have three vintage suitcases I have promised to paint for a friend. I have to get them done. Do you know if the furniture paint you use is more durable than the leather paint I have? Thank you so much for the ideas.
I’ve never used leather paint, but Fusion Mineral Paint is about the most durable paint you can get. I am currently on a road trip and have my sunflower train case with me. I’ll take a photo of it tonight and put it on our Instagram page tonight so you can see how it has held up after 3 years. I take it with me on all road trips and it sits on my bathroom vanity at all times to hold my makeup.
Oh, our instagram is instagram.com/vintagebeedesign
I just posted the case on IG.
