    We did a ten day hike around Ausangate. Heard avalanches that sounded like thunder. Hiked over a pass above 15,000 ft. The locals dry and burn Alpaca poop as fuel for cooking and warmth as there are no trees at altitude. Beautiful Country.

      Wow 10 days, did everyone feel ok on that hike?

    • @MichaelKilby
      @MichaelKilby 11 месяцев назад

      @@JumpingPlaces We all had altitude sickness and one in our party had to be evacuated on horseback to a dirt road, then by ambulance with 4x4 wheel drive. We did two days hike in one day to get him out asap. We visited him in hospital. Met two doctors who treated him for pneumonia. After a couple of days he was well enough to travel. He was well cared for. Had to pay his bill in full prior to leaving. I don’t think we acclimated to the altitude before leaving for the hike. I successfully summited Kilimanjaro this year without any altitude sickness.

    • @JumpingPlaces
      @JumpingPlaces  11 месяцев назад +1

      @@MichaelKilbydamn that sounds real tough for that person, they must have been scared. How hard is the Kilimanjaro trek?

    • @MichaelKilby
      @MichaelKilby 11 месяцев назад

      @@JumpingPlaces We hiked the Lemosho Route. VIP private group with a support team of 13. Four of us were 67/68 years old, one was 31. We all summited. Took meds for altitude. Summited at 6 am. 16 F! One of the greatest experiences of my life. Life changing. I thought it was easy but I’ve climbed a lot of mountains. I was very concerned about altitude. We arrived a couple of days early. Climbed a volcano in Kilimanjaro National Park with our guide and an armed Park Ranger to help acclimate. Tanzania is amazing!

    The altitude in Peru is serious, and it hits you at the most unexpected moment. I will tell you once you get to las montañas de colores be prepared, you may have the same experience. The Caballero costs about the same. Also be sure to bring extra sol to pay to enter that region in Andes it’s separate from the tour costs.

  • @gatbos
    @gatbos 11 месяцев назад +2

    Carol is right. Hikiing in high altitudes is something that cannot be rushed. You should really take it slow.
    Sometimes the mind wants to do things that the body doesn't.
    Good decision on turning back.
    Your body's health is more important 👍

    Love your videos! I was in Peru 2020, and the lake hike was my favorite part. Living close to sea level, it was incredibly difficult. We acclimated for about 4 days before attempting it with other tours, and I consider myself in great shape (work out daily for almost 30 years). My wife made it about 1/3 the way before she took a horse. I was determined to make it, and I did, but it took a long time. I felt lightheaded and sick the rest of the day from it. Altitude sickness is no joke. We got lucky with perfect weather and there was even a small avalanche high up behind the lake too.
    One of the younger guys from our hotel almost didn't make it back to the bus. He made the mistake of doing Rainbow mountain on his 1st day and was experiencing severe altitude sickness already (dizzy, nausea, etc.) I felt terrible for him cause his 3rd day was Macchu Picchu and he couldn't make it. He spent that day with some oxygen supplied by the hotel. If you travel to Cusco, take it light the first few days and slowly build up to the higher excursions.

    • @1999TransAmWS6
      @1999TransAmWS6 6 месяцев назад

      @@porfiriato84 My main word of advice is do the trek later in your trip. If you're there for a week and staying in Cusco, maybe do it on day 5 or 6. That way you get a few days to acclimate. Our arrival day we just walked around town. Day 2 was Machu Pichuu. Another easy excursion on day 3. I believe day 4 or 5 was Lake Humantay. The horse rides to the top are pretty cheap. They followed us up and kept offering if we were struggling.

    Wow, very beautiful scenery. Any of you had altitude sickness? One day I like to take trip to Peru and go for a hike but concern about altitude sickness.

    If you hadn’t mentioned getting sick we wouldn’t have noticed and I don’t consider that a failure, it’s more about honesty rather than risking your health. Chris, nice look with the new sweater 👍…Carol wore the perfect shirt color to blend in with the background plus the free advertising 😹. I consider myself to be somewhat in good health but after seeing what you guys went through, I think I’ll just stick to watching your videos, which btw…Stunning views!!! Good job and guys stay healthy 👍👍

      Yes altitude is a tough one, you can be healthy but it can still get to you. Seems to just depend on the person. If you are fit I think you stand a better chance though, also acclimatization plays a big part before doing the hikes

      Yes on other treks at this altitude we just rest for a while when we get nauseous and lightheaded and it usually resolves the issue. Unfortunately because of the roadworks on this day we had a time limit so we could treat so much

    Good that the donkeys/mules/ horses? are well cared for and can help weary travelers if need be. Definitely want to do this trek someday but I have not yet been at any kind of higher altitude so I have no clue how I’d react. No hot springs? Other vlogs I’ve watched on the Salkantay trek stop there but maybe it’s the 3-5 day ones. Looking forward to your machu piccu video…. My bucket list

      I think that is the longer trek. There are hot springs in the town near Machu picchu though and we went to them. Coming soon!

    did you guys had any altitude sickness meds? I know that what some hikers bring with them and start taking them days before the hike, I just wonder how you did it? thank you

    11:38 the left side of the lake is a mirror of the right side. Don't you wish you had a geologist with you when you go into the mountains or geologically exotic places like Utah to explain how things formed?
