Honestly, shadowing a doctor or nurse would not be a bad idea. I am not sure if you could also shadow some engineer at a medical device company! Sometimes hospitals or universities may have internship opportunities for high school students so look into that too!

I havent heard about that specifically. But I have heard of master programs that incorporate technology and business/management aspects for commercialization. I am currently considering an Engineering Management master's degree at UT, where the description says " This degree prepares you to move into advanced engineering management positions, or business leadership roles and allows you to strategically plan your next career move". 3:35 You have a very good idea of functions within a company. Not so many people your age already have that insight and it's so good you invest in getting to know the 'habitat' so to speak. I guess this is why you and I are doing what we do on RUclips: spreading awareness on this because, indeed, when 'kids' come in into the biomedical study field, all they have in mind is standing in a in a lab in a white lab coat... ;) 5:24 completely agree, and indeed, as I'm doing research myself now as a PhD student back in academia, it's quite a roller coaster ride! 6:53 I was actually surprised that you could get into a hospital job with a biomedical engineering degree, really didn't know! Of course you can get in hospital lab for like routine sample diagnosis as a biomedical science graduate (MLT function), but I can indeed assume you can have someone who fixes all the medical devices or some sort :) 9:02 Legal: yes, but usually this requires (some) extra training in legal matters, no? I knew someone who transferred from associate scientist to patent attorney, but heard she invested in extra training. 11:53 we are on the same mission! ;)

I was considering that UT health program. But there is also neurology program which is what I prefer. It's better than a masters degree ATM because most professors focuses on undergrad here at UH

Great overview! I see much overlap with the job functions I list on my channel, but that's not that big of a surprise as BME and BMS have much in common, especially in certain biomedical subfields, like tissue-engineering!
I heard there is two types in Bachelor: Bachelor of science in BME and Bachelor of engineering in BME. Which one did you take in your Uni? What is the difference between the two? Honestly, I hadn't heard of this. Question for you, did you see both offered at the same university? I would assume that maybe some universities offer B.S. and others B.E. I don't think there should be much of a difference. My university offers a Bachelors of Science in engineering. I think MOST colleges will do B.S. Bachelors in Engineering are usually in countries like Australia, UK, New Zealand from what I saw when i searched it. And yes, so to be a technical specialist, this means you will basically specialize in some field of medicine, say cardiology as I give the example. There are several programs out there where you can get accreditation AFTER completing your bachelors. You will specialize in medical devices in said field, and you will work at hospitals closely with doctors and patients to manage devices. @@t.k7129 There are definitely jobs out there but they can be pretty competitive. Make sure to get some research or internship experience while you are an undergrad to be a competitive candidate. I am honestly not so sure about hospital jobs (I personally have a focus to industry).If you know that you are going to medical school right after, I would go to medical school right away without waiting. I understand it is a lot of money, but it is also a looong career. And you will get your money back once you are a practicing doctor. However, as someone who is planning to work in industry, I will follow that path of graduating with B.S. working for a couple of years, and then go back to grad school for either a masters or a PhD. So its really up to what you want to do. Try to network and find internships. Those will give you connections and you can meet people that are doing the same thing you'd like to do, and they might give better advice :) hope this helps though!
BME definetely sounds incredible! I´m actually studying pharmacology, but i´m also interested in BME. i would like to study BME as a second major, but i´m not sure how well those 2 majors would work together. Any opinions? Is a good idea?
I think you could see some overlap but both are definitely different. There are areas of study of drugs in BME research, like drug delivery technologies for example. But in the most part I think they can be pretty different. BME would definitely give you a broader knowledge of the biomedical field, outside of pharmaceuticals. But if your interest is in that specific field, I don’t see a need to double major. However, if you’d like to broaden your options to medical devices for example, then you ah want to consider BME. Hope this helps 😊
Yes! But they are very similar too. I am not an expert on biomedical science, but I believe that in a Biomedical Science major you get more exposure to well.. the science, say microbiology for example. In biomedical engineering you are an engineering major so you will get classes like engineering analysis, statics, dynamics, transport, etc. I think they both have the same foundation, but Biomedical Science might replace engineering courses with more in depth theoretical science courses. It is just a matter of what you prefer but they are definitely similar. You can get similar jobs with both, but they do have their differences.

Eniola Ojo I would recommend a Masters on Business Administration (MBA) or you could also do a masters that combines engineering with business which are fairly new and popular. I personally know of two masters: one called Masters in Engineering Management and another one called Master of Science in Biomedical Technology Commercialization. Anything along those terms that includes business courses like marketing, management, negotiation, etc should be good 😊 hope this helps!
I would ALSO recommend, that if you’re just finishing your bachelors, you first work a couple of years before going for a masters. Entering the “real world” will give you a better idea of what kind of graduate program you’d like to pursue! 😊

And you can also go into sales as an engineer, as I also personally know someone who does this 😅 maybe it’s not common, but it’s definitely possible!

I personally love it! But it really is up to you and what you wanna do. If you see yourself working closely with patients and treating them, I would say nursing is the way to go. But if you’d like a job still in the medical field but with a lot of different options I think BME is great!

Don’t go for a fancy degree. Go for nursing since it’s more practical and pays well. Moreover you can even work anywhere. Ask your seniors where they are working in bme field. Most can’t find jobs are are forced to go To grad school to find something meaningful with that degree. You should talk to more people before making such important decisions that will affect your career. Go to job websites and see the jobs available for bme graduates or of possible take a trip to the hospital to see the kind of work they do and see if you can enjoy their work long term.
Yes, I think those are the two main ones! But there’s definitely other things like pharmaceuticals, or working at hospitals. When it comes to what courses you use, I think it really depends on what you actually do during your career. For example, if you get a research job where you’re in a lab, then the labs during undergrad may have helped you develop some basic skills. But overall, you really use less than 10% of what you learn in school. 90% is about developing the skill to be able to learn and solve problems and think critically. That’s what all engineering degrees have in common!
I'm currently In highschool and im confused about my future plans. BME kinda got into my list of options and feels good to me but still no idea about what exactly to do to be a biomedical engineer. Should i study for some other engineering like mechanical , electrical or even go to medical school and then do majors on BME or join BME directly? Which one would be Good ? Thanks Alot.
Hi Mohammed, you can do either or. There is no right answer, it is up to your interests. BME is very interdisciplinary, so if you want to learn a little bit of everything focusing on medical applications, do BME. If you love mechanics or electronics, then do mechanical engineering or electrical engineering and you can minor in BME. Totally up to you!
jin min There are definitely jobs out there, and is a field in growing demand. However, I can honestly say that other more general engineerings such as Mechanical are in greater demand. I chose BME because I love how multidisciplinary it is, it has great job outlook and potential to have high earning income.

From what I have researched, to obtain an M.D. it is 4 years after bachelors and then about 3-5 years of residency, rotations, etc. So you would be looking at a total of about 12 years after graduating high school to be a practicing physician. I am honestly not sure about where the best places to master in tissue engineering would be. I did a quick google search and top results were MIT and Duke University. Nur Shafiqah Abdul Aziz well if you want to apply to a BME program, you’ll probably need science courses like biology, chemistry, physics and up to calculus 2. But it really depends on the school where you are so make sure to check their requirements!

However, as someone who is planning to work in industry, I will follow that path of graduating with B.S. working for a couple of years, and then go back to grad school for either a masters or a PhD.
So its really up to what you want to do. Try to network and find internships. Those will give you connections and you can meet people that are doing the same thing you'd like to do, and they might give better advice :) hope this helps though!

I´m actually studying pharmacology, but i´m also interested in BME. i would like to study BME as a second major, but i´m not sure how well those 2 majors would work together. Any opinions? Is a good idea?
I think you could see some overlap but both are definitely different. There are areas of study of drugs in BME research, like drug delivery technologies for example. But in the most part I think they can be pretty different.
BME would definitely give you a broader knowledge of the biomedical field, outside of pharmaceuticals. But if your interest is in that specific field, I don’t see a need to double major. However, if you’d like to broaden your options to medical devices for example, then you ah want to consider BME. Hope this helps 😊
is biomedical engineering and biomedical science different??
Yes! But they are very similar too. I am not an expert on biomedical science, but I believe that in a Biomedical Science major you get more exposure to well.. the science, say microbiology for example. In biomedical engineering you are an engineering major so you will get classes like engineering analysis, statics, dynamics, transport, etc. I think they both have the same foundation, but Biomedical Science might replace engineering courses with more in depth theoretical science courses. It is just a matter of what you prefer but they are definitely similar. You can get similar jobs with both, but they do have their differences.

Eniola Ojo I would recommend a Masters on Business Administration (MBA) or you could also do a masters that combines engineering with business which are fairly new and popular. I personally know of two masters: one called Masters in Engineering Management and another one called Master of Science in Biomedical Technology Commercialization. Anything along those terms that includes business courses like marketing, management, negotiation, etc should be good 😊 hope this helps!
I would ALSO recommend, that if you’re just finishing your bachelors, you first work a couple of years before going for a masters. Entering the “real world” will give you a better idea of what kind of graduate program you’d like to pursue! 😊

And you can also go into sales as an engineer, as I also personally know someone who does this 😅 maybe it’s not common, but it’s definitely possible!

I personally love it! But it really is up to you and what you wanna do. If you see yourself working closely with patients and treating them, I would say nursing is the way to go. But if you’d like a job still in the medical field but with a lot of different options I think BME is great!

Don’t go for a fancy degree. Go for nursing since it’s more practical and pays well. Moreover you can even work anywhere. Ask your seniors where they are working in bme field. Most can’t find jobs are are forced to go
To grad school to find something meaningful with that degree. You should talk to more people before making such important decisions that will affect your career. Go to job websites and see the jobs available for bme graduates or of possible take a trip to the hospital to see the kind of work they do and see if you can enjoy their work long term.
As a biomedical engineering do you mainly work in developing devices and research? What undergrad courses do you use the most in your career?
Yes, I think those are the two main ones! But there’s definitely other things like pharmaceuticals, or working at hospitals. When it comes to what courses you use, I think it really depends on what you actually do during your career. For example, if you get a research job where you’re in a lab, then the labs during undergrad may have helped you develop some basic skills. But overall, you really use less than 10% of what you learn in school. 90% is about developing the skill to be able to learn and solve problems and think critically. That’s what all engineering degrees have in common!

BME kinda got into my list of options and feels good to me but still no idea about what exactly to do to be a biomedical engineer. Hi Mohammed, you can do either or. There is no right answer, it is up to your interests. BME is very interdisciplinary, so if you want to learn a little bit of everything focusing on medical applications, do BME. If you love mechanics or electronics, then do mechanical engineering or electrical engineering and you can minor in BME. Totally up to you!

jin min There are definitely jobs out there, and is a field in growing demand. However, I can honestly say that other more general engineerings such as Mechanical are in greater demand. I chose BME because I love how multidisciplinary it is, it has great job outlook and potential to have high earning income.

From what I have researched, to obtain an M.D. it is 4 years after bachelors and then about 3-5 years of residency, rotations, etc. So you would be looking at a total of about 12 years after graduating high school to be a practicing physician.
I am honestly not sure about where the best places to master in tissue engineering would be. I did a quick google search and top results were MIT and Duke University.
