  • We are excited to release our interview with Tara Westover, author of the New York Times bestseller “Educated.”
“[A] searing debut memoir… Westover recounts her upbringing with six siblings on an Idaho farm dominated by her father…who tried to live off the grid, kept four children (including the author) out of school…and stockpiled supplies and guns for the end-time…When she finally escaped the toxic atmosphere of dogma, suspicion, and patriarchy to attend college and then grad school at Cambridge, her identity crisis precipitated a heartbreaking rupture. Westover’s vivid prose makes this saga of the pressures of conformity and self-assertion that warp a family seem both terrifying and ordinary.”

I grew up in a traditional mormon family and I'm stunned at how much Tara's experience resonates with my abuse story. I think I need to read her book now!

If you get it, lend it to me afterwards. ;)
I'm floored at the parallels, myself.

I am so glad I read it. Although I did not grow up in a family that adhered to Mormonism, I related to so many aspects of Tara's story and her thoughts about her experiences.

Her family wasn't a traditional "Mormon" family. She makes that clear.

Tara, thank you for sharing your journey publicly. It takes a lot of inner courage to leave a physically and emotionally abusing family and then to tell the TRUTH about what happened. Our abusers try to convince us that the abuse never happened and that either we are crazy or we made it all up. It takes years to break free of this mind control and live from our TRUTH, because it means we have to give up the illusion of having a caring family. You have made an incredible journey of self-discovery and TRUTH in your 30 something years. Tara, please be proud of your inner resolve that enabled you to have the fortitude to make this journey. Your story reminds me of one of my favorite poems, THE JOURNEY by Mary Oliver. If you are not familiar with this poem please read it. Tara, I wish you joy, peace, contentment and love as you continue your life now with your truth. Thank you John for introducing Tara Westover and her journey to us.

I was wondering in part one, if her stoicism was due to decades of compartmentalizing and disconnecting to the atrocities that befell her. What a Shero, for being a voice to humanity! ❤A heart felt thank you.

I was part of the Mormon homeschool culture. What she describes is more extreme than most homeschoolers, but a lot of the elements of her story were similar. The paranoia about the government, medicine, going to public school, etc. were there.

As the host said "Gas lighted you", probably read about narcissistic personality disorder and see it with reference to your experience.
Narcissists know they can make you feel the way they want.
