I'm a lefty and I have to turn the paper upside down, I also find it easy to write upside down and backwards. People used to think I was an oddball for that in school lol x
I'm right handed, my little sister is left handed though. I don't know if this is weird or not but my handwriting changes all the time, it depends mainly on my mood and the situation i'm in. If i'm bored or in a rush to finish, my handwriting is messy, compact and it leans to the right. If i'm happy, excited or daydreaming, it's very spaced out, the letters are curvy, it very slightly leans to the right and its bigger. When i'm angry it's all over the place, not slanted, uneven letters and it's cramped together. This change can happen mid-sentence if say, my college tutor starts giving me that "you need to add more" talk etc. Does this happen to anyone else? It's not a problem to me and people can read it fine anyway but i've always thought a person has 1 style of handwriting which changes over time with practice. I do have a hobby in writing my own fantasy stories (which will never be published) on paper so I get lots of practice. :3
Tip - treat yourself to a new pen, maybe even a fountain pen? I just did this - although the pen was actually a present - which led me to diagnose the need to address my terrible left handed scrawl. I find that using a nice pen on half-decent paper introduces a bit of respect for the tools being used - because of this, it's easier to keep a bit of discipline going. Definitely works for me.
Damn, this man is a really good person. I love how he laughs at his own handwriting and calling it "rubbish", he also has a quite friendly voice. Earns a sub.
Thanks. You have confirmed what I have thought about my shocking writing, in as much as fixing it. I went back to when I learnt to print and learning to spell. Once we could do both of those, we moved onto writing cursive. We also progressed from chalk and slate to pencil and finally ink and pen. I am finding using a fountain pen helps to slow down my writing. As you said, spell each word in our head, as we are writing the word. You hit one point on the head, I never considered the reason for my bad writing was because I am dyslexic. It also means we try to talk and write at the same speed we are processing everything through our brain and of course, the brain is faster than the pen. I was luckier than most. My Great Aunt was an Infant School teacher and after hearing I was having reading problems, she knew straight away and set about making sure I learnt how to overcome it. My life was hell until I moved to another school. I am now 62 and I still have to watch myself. So thank you for your helpful videos, and yes you can teach an old girl new tricks. I am making a habit of practicing and hopefully, I am improving my hand writing everyday. So thank you.
I started to do calligraphy, this has help me so much I can actually write in a straight line,i used a ruled line page with writing paper on top, practice is key.
Your video was so helpful to me, since school I've learned cursive handwriting but with time as you said I spent more and more time on the computer and gradually stopped my handwriting, I think when I realise that I decided to return to use my notebook (Paper) and turning my head toward my pencils, just to remember how important for me is to have a beautiful handwriting, at least for myself I pretend in the years I have left to improve more and more my handwriting
ijust started learning to write cursive last year and im still trying to wean myself off the standard school style of having to write super fast and small. cursive feels so flid and looks amazing! i still have trouble forming my letters when i try to write normally without thinking of the individual letters. thanks for the tips! not giving up!
I have a similarly strong trouble with handwriting. This has been insightful, certainly put some light on what's going on with my writing. Especially that bit about jotting ideas, it's the worst when you're a writer. I'll follow your theory and see how it goes.
I recently started my A-levels in maths, further maths, physics and chemistry. One of the grounds I chose them on was that I wouldn't have to exercise my illegible handwriting as much I would in essay subjects. I have since found that I have been far more selective in my word choice in these analytic subjects and that my handwriting has become far better since I'm not having to rush out circuitous threads of description for a simple idea. I reckon that you are absolutely right in your philosophy of slowing down because not only does it allow you to focus on the individual letters but also on the words as a whole- giving a better flow to your handwriting.
I noticed that my handwriting got worse too the moment I used computer more for drawing and writing. I noticed my ideas wasn't as fluid either. So I use notebooks and write or sketchnote ideas out by hand now to not lose my handwriting. And to keep my drawing hand loose for artwork. Good points you brought up on bad habits. This applies to more than writing and art. Glad you shared.
I know how you feel about rushing. sometimes I'll add an "e" to words that end in "th" when I meant to write "the" an example would be : " The cat withe orange stripes"
dr.reeds90 you can switch your arabic script... there's the basic, ugly looking one and the more free flowing, artistic script, basically cursive arabic.
Thank you very much you helped me I'm in my freshman year in highschool and I felt judged cuz of my hand writing but u helped me so thank u and now I feel better
Your videos are adorable... Also we need to also have confidence in everything we do. My hand written is terrible too but with the help of your videos I am improving as I practice. I truly believe you should make more videos like this.... Thank you so much
I have really enjoyed all of your videos, not just this one. I'm a bit late in finding your videos, but I have found them to be very helpful and fun. Thank you for taking the time and effort to make them. Sincerely.
man my handwriting is so bad that teachers started to ask me am I studying Chinese or other language but with your help I was able to improve my handwriting so thank u sir very very very much
For left handers... I'm actually learning to write Hebrew and Arabic, writing from right to left with my right hand hasn't been a problem for me. You can probably adjust your writing direction (slightly diagonal), buy better pens with better ink, pens that wouldn't require you to hold it too upright. I have been mostly using fountain pens to write, and a fountain pen allows me to hold the pen more relaxed, in an angle, well because of the nature of the pen too, but basically you want to still see everything you just wrote, rest your writing hand below your current writing line.
Your theory is correct. I had terrible handwriting as a youngster. After keeping a journal for 20ish years, I can slow down and write legibly, even quite nicely.
Another video I've seen on keeping track of ideas was by a painter. He kept sticky notes and a digital voice recorder handy while he painted to make notes of new drawing ideas. He could listen to them or transcribe them at a later date.
Good stuff! I'm trying to relearn cursive--in Brazil in the 90s, many schools taught kids cursive first, and penmanship was a factor into your grade. I'm a leftie. It was fine when I was writing in pencil only, but I started smudging badly in the 6th grade (roughly 10 years old) here in the U.S., when we were allowed to use pens. So I began shifting my paper sideways... which slanted my handwriting badly, and made it illegible to my teachers (who seemed already not used to seeing cursive handwriting to begin with). I started copying the handwriting of the girl in front of me, who had this lovely, perfect block print, and by the end of the year I wrote as neatly as she did, at roughly half the size. Then, as each year passed, my handwriting became smaller and smaller until it was almost illegible. It was still super neat, but incredibly tiny. Furthermore, I was diagnosed with a learning disability (ADHD), and one of the things that tipped them off was the fact that I'd often forget my thought when half-way through my word and leave them half-complete. I was then recommended by a classmate last year in a college class, who has ADHD as well, to attempt cursive again. She said it helped her at least finish the word before losing her thoughts--something about the focus of the action of block-printing being on each letter, rather than the entire word. I found that it's improved my focus in note-taking a lot. ... It didn't help me with reading it again, though, since it's all slanted and messy. It especially frustrates me because my block-printing is very neat, so seeing my cursive next to it is embarrassing, hahaha. At least it's helped me get my thoughts down on paper more fully--I can work on making it neater a bit everyday. :)
My handwriting is some times better but more often it is very bad. I mean it is not consistent. could you please guide me how to make my handwriting consistent?
could you do a video on whats the best way to hold a pencil or pen? I always had my whole hand on the pencil then i started from 1st grade to hold my pencil differently but I still till 6th grade I don't feel like i hold it right
Thank you for interesting video. I niticed my hand become hardened while i'm trying new writing pattern. Especially when i'm switching hands. I mean hand, which is pen-holder at the moment. At the same time i noticed my left hand start to write georgian letters much proper that right hand writes my native russian letters....

Shoo! You started writing your A like a U again when you were concentrating on the E! Your handwriting reminds me a lot of my own handwriting. My A's and G's are all wrong and I tend to trail off the ends of my words a lot. And dyslexia! I get my P's and B's and D's all mixed up :(( gotta practice!
very nicely explained, I could identify my problem.. I am left handed, and dyslexic as well. I may start practice to improve my handwriting from now on. And let you know after one month how did I progress.
Funnily enough I have same thing with sometimes joining words up like you, joining up the words weirdly when I am not supposed to. I keep catching myself doing it when I write, especially when quickly.

I have always had awful handwriting, made worse over the years by my carpal tunnel syndrome. Recently I have made efforts to improve my writing and have started to use an old fashioned dip pen. Well what an improvement this has made! I think it’s because the pen makes me slow down and think more. I wish I had done this many years ago.
2 years ago I came into some guitars. Long story, but before that time, the only time I had even held a guitar was for a mate, while he opened his beer. I learnd tabs and watched videos. You can learn anything on youtube. I can play about 25 songs now, and 12 are good enough to play infront of the hearing impaired, but it started ugly. . . .real ugly. Think auditory version of a bad smell. It is something I really wanted though. Somewhere in the process I learned how to overcome my dyslexic brain. I learned how to learn. Play each note, one after the other. Start slow then build up. Each time you get a little better, not alot, just enough to feed you and make you want more. Now I start on my craptastic handwritting. At least I'm not starting from zero. Thanks.
Man, you're pure endearing. A very funny person. That's why you got my subscription, now... let's check the content of your channel! ;-p hahaha Way to go. Keep doing a great job. Best regards ; )

my friend says I write in my own code. 2,3 sometimes 4 letters can turn into one made up of all these letters combined. I recently found my old fountain pen and some journals and realize a change must be made! I think my problem is what you said- trying to write as fast as I think. Gonna work on it.
I switch between the computer "a" and the "a" they teach you in school. Sometimes my a's would look wonky, so I switch to the other "a" automatically :P
I'm left handed and I've never had the problem of smudging ink or pencil, maybe when going back to write in a previously written area but not while actually writing. I don't curl my hand just simply turn my paper like any person writing with their right hand. I'm trying to be more ambidextrous which is why I'm here :/ I'm having trouble holding the damn pencil haha! :D
Things that help me slow down when I have racing brain are saying things out loud as I write, which helps edit out the rubbish and helps me 'remember' what I've written later, and writing in capital letters which is much easier to read back later. I think it's also important to recognise the difference between 'legible' and 'pretty'. Just because someone's writing looks nice on a page, doesn't mean it can be read easily. Nor does it necessarily follow that scruffy looking writing is hard to read. I think the most important part is being able to read your own writing, no matter what it looks like.
Why are you so wonderful!? I swear your personality is just charming!
I'm a lefty and I have to turn the paper upside down, I also find it easy to write upside down and backwards. People used to think I was an oddball for that in school lol x
I am the same! Must be a leftie thing 😜 lol
I'm right handed, my little sister is left handed though.

True, need to tame the habits and learn to see the different in progress when you really get into writing. That is what I am doing now.
Good stuff!

Okay so I'm left handed love my handwriting and also love cursive so a tip is ALWAYS use paper mate the dry so fast so they don't smudge
i have problems writing ri together it just looks like an n with a dot on top please help me!
this was helpful...thank you
Thanks, this will help me with my school work 😊
You're just too darned jolly! Quit laughing. You're giving me an uncontrollable urge to smile! 😄
My handwriting is some times better but more often it is very bad. I mean it is not consistent. could you please guide me how to make my handwriting consistent?
Your video was amazing!
Oh it's my first time to watch your video and it's really fun~! :DD You are so adorable
could you do a video on whats the best way to hold a pencil or pen? I always had my whole hand on the pencil then i started from 1st grade to hold my pencil differently but I still till 6th grade I don't feel like i hold it right
Thank you for interesting video.
I niticed my hand become hardened while i'm trying new writing pattern. Especially when i'm switching hands. I mean hand, which is pen-holder at the moment. At the same time i noticed my left hand start to write georgian letters much proper that right hand writes my native russian letters....
Good advice for all. A couple of months ago I decided my handwriting needed some correction. It was messy and I noticed in proofreading that I had "text speak" abbreviations. Texting and handwriting are not the same thing. I went back to the beginning. I looked up images of the alphabet in both print and cursive handwriting. Slowing down was the hardest part.
Love the Ensign Ful-Vue on your shelf! :p
wonderful handwriting with wonderful laughs, this video is super
What I would do is steal my classmate's handwriting and look at the letters, and if I see a letter that I like, I would just copy it.
And I am left handed meaning pencils, whiteboards, and blackboards are my enemies
You would probably be really good at calligraphy! Most of my favorites are left-handers
And let you know after one month how did I progress.
love your smile... thanks from India
Funnily enough I have same thing with sometimes joining words up like you, joining up the words weirdly when I am not supposed to. I keep catching myself doing it when I write, especially when quickly.
When I write s in cursive I don't connect it. And what do I do about when I use a pen my hand writing changed when I use a pencil my hand writing changes as well.
I'm a southpaw, and that's so true! Funny enough, a lot of people comment on how neat my writing is, even though I barely notice it.
thx for the help
I have always had awful handwriting, made worse over the years by my carpal tunnel syndrome. Recently I have made efforts to improve my writing and have started to use an old fashioned dip pen. Well what an improvement this has made! I think it’s because the pen makes me slow down and think more.
I wish I had done this many years ago.
Will my handwriting be a bit bad cause I put my pen/pencil between my middle and the other finger (idk its name) plus I use a ball point pen
the person with the best handwriting I know, is left handed
That's why you got my subscription, now... let's check the content of your channel! ;-p hahaha
Way to go. Keep doing a great job. Best regards ; )
My friend's handwriting looks nice but we can't read it and neither can she.
I have the same problem 😂
Great shoo
While good handwriting is worth working at, for notes I need to jot down quick I use gregg shorthand. It was really worth learning, if only for that reason but also class notes
as a left handed person, i discovered that it was easier writing with the paper upside down or at least bent at a 45 degree angle.
A lot of colleagues of mine absolutely adore my handwriting. When they later discover that I'm left handed, they become even more gobsmacked. Yes I write with my left hand but I don't curl my left wrist inward when I write.
I Love Your Vids
love your videos! can you please do a video on how to be left handed i rlly want to😍
hi! should i use cursive or print handwriting? I wnat it to be clear but also fast :) Thanks
My handwriting is really bad but recently I tried italicizing my letters and making it look curvy and it seemed to improve.
Plus, I've been practicing my handwriting as well. ;-) Imagine a Rocky Balboa of penmanship.
i completely cut out from cursive writing (except my signiture) b/c it was so bad, and so illegible that i write in print. well my print is still pretty undesirable and idk what i can do to fix it
my friend says I write in my own code. 2,3 sometimes 4 letters can turn into one made up of all these letters combined. I recently found my old fountain pen and some journals and realize a change must be made! I think my problem is what you said- trying to write as fast as I think. Gonna work on it.
Another great video! you should get millions of subscribers! :D
Great Video
You have the most enjoyable voice and personality! I'm sold on a subscription. :) Thank you for the helpful tips!
Thanks.
that's soo true
I'm left handed and trust me it is SO HARD when people demonstrate activities with their RIGHT HAND!
What type of pen are you using? I love the way it looks
I switch between the computer "a" and the "a" they teach you in school. Sometimes my a's would look wonky, so I switch to the other "a" automatically :P
I have a problem of writing really small, my professors have complained and noted on it... please explain how i could improve in that aspect.
Hmm I would never thought about changing the style of some letters. That might help me, thanks :). Oh, I'm lefty by the way :)
Thankyou so much, my handwriting stinks but it's slowly improving!
A smile will gain you ten more years of life.

Thakyou very much it improved mu handwriting
