    Very good explanation of CRT signalling. It's neat how they were able to flatten the tube for this application. Thanks!

      They didn’t do it for intercoms. Sony introduced this type of tube in 1982 with the first Watchman (their pocket TV line). Intercoms and whatnot came later as a repurposing of the technology, mostly after pocket TVs had switched to color LCDs.

    Haha putting your fingers in the picture and looking at the signal on the scope, did that as a kid. Fun times. I remember saving for my first DSO, only to keep using my old analog scope once I could finally afford one. Nothing beats a good old analog to do troubleshooting. Nice visual on how interlacing works 👍🏻

      @vaclavtrpisovsky Год назад +5

      @@sortofsmarter Not really, B/W TV sync & ramp circuits were impressive in the 50’s-60’s when the technology was new. In the 1980’s, when this chip was designed, it was amazing to see them minituarized to the point where only basic amplification was neccessary to drive a CRT using this chip. This is why it was in most B/W video monitors back then, before OSD and digital controls became commonplace. By the 2000’s, we already had decent digital cameras, color handheld consoles or MP3 players, all with circuits just as small and orders of magnitude more complicated.
      That is not to say that the CRT itself is not black magic, and generating suitable keystone & dynamic focus waveforms with a few analog components is a notable achievement too. I am also impressed by the minituare, low-power HV source.
      So everything about this monitor is really amazing... just not the chip. It was on its way out by the 2000’s while discrete analog circuitry feels more timeless.

    Disappointed that you didn’t connect your AVR memory oscilloscope to it. The grid is a nice focus & linearity test, and if it turns out sharp enough, it may even become your favorite display for it instead of that SOMY® portable TV. You could even remove the audio section and build the scope into it.
    Also consider adding standard jacks for power (& perhaps video) to make it more convenient (removing the need to use a variable PSU and twisting wires together).

    I wouldn't mind seeing how the video output circuitry works in this. Also perhaps add DC restoration if it doesn't have it already. My old TV drives video into the CRT grid and achieves DC restoration essentially by having a diode between ground and grid, making the synchronization pulses always 0v at the CRT.
    Actually it's more complicated than a diode. It's actually a clever circuit using a triode in cathode follower mode for DC restoration and at the same time working as a common grid sync separator.

I actually have that same Sony battery charger and just a couple of days ago it suddenly stopped charging my batteries.
    I dont know much about electronics but with what ive learned watching your videos i think i know what the issue is. I opened the charger and in the beggining of the circuit next to the prongs that connect to Mains there is a component that ive heard you call a Fusible Resistor and it looks burned and has a tiny crack in the middle. Everything else in the circuit after this component looks fine.
    Again sorry to ask you but how can i buy that component. Do i look it up as a Resistor? Do they have a certain rating?
