1:40:58 Sentinel Beach (2001) was probably my favourite "first level" until Central Yharnam (2015) in Bloodborne. Such a good entry level introducing the mechanics (and dangers!) of the game without feeling as oppressive as the Forbidden Jungle.

I LOVE this franchise! Great list and video! I think my favorite levels are Snowy Mountain from Jak 1, the Mountain Temple and Haven Forest from Jak II, The Stadium in Jak II, and the Stadium / Palace Ruins in Jak 3.

This is a series that desperately needs a remake. With a remake, and by remake I mean reimagining of the series, they could fix all of the things that they messed up or underdeveloped in the previous games. They could flesh out Rock Village and they could fix the Volcanic Crater. They could improve the lackluster missions in 3 and completely erase Last Frontier from existence. I’ve played all of these games repeatedly and the reason I go back to it is because of atmosphere. The atmosphere and the idea of this fantasy world where things are powered by eco is extraordinary, but like anything you enjoyed in your childhood the mistakes become glaring as you get older. I love the idea of these games, but with the right team they could revitalize the series into something fantastic.

    • @Kwauhn.
      @Kwauhn. 2 месяца назад +2

I always think I want a remake, but remakes almost always leave some level of disappointment. I agree with all of those things you said, but the things we want rarely overlap with what devs end up implementing in remakes. I would be incredibly surprised if there was ever a J&D remake that covered all of those bases. On top of that, remakes usually end up "fixing" things that didn't need any changes in the first place.
I want remakes for games that had potential, but ultimately fell flat in some way. Sleeping Dogs, for example, needs a remake. J&D is already so close to perfection that I would be more worried than excited if they announced a remake.
Remake. Mlem. I typed and read the word so many times that it's starting to lose meaning haha.

I’d love a “re-imagining” of J&D with all the concepts of levels they didn’t have the time and space to add to the original. We have the hardware now

The only Jak games I played were Jak 3, Frontier, and Daxter.
Out of all of these, Jak 3 has stuck with me till this day. I used to draw the levels from a birds eye view from memory on large pieces of paper with colored markers.
I still have, albeit rare, dreams about the desert area in Jak 3 where the hills and cliffs are a little too exagerated and I'm driving away from a massive abundance of marauders. There were other dreams where there were no signs of life whatsoever. Just wind and sand.
Other areas that were very memorable to me was the catacomb tubes leading to that underground area and minecart boss fight, the sewers (I still vividly remember running up those sloped aqueducts while my mom attempted to feed me vegetable soup), the metal-head caves (I fucking love that place), the entire volcano sequence starting with the hopper, the temple area underneath the monk temple, the metal-head city and nest, and the warzone that was pretty much constant throughout Haven City (I really like how each faction has their own occupations and fight each other at the borders).
Also, that Terraformer boss fight at the end was THE SHIT!! The only other game that does large beasts as good is probably Shadow Of The Colossus. The Terraformer walking around looks really fucking good for its time.
About the fighting in Haven City; I always have liked when games put you in the middle of a conflict between friendlies and enemies. They did it a lot in Halo, too. Another game I played a lot of as a kid. I used to and still do protect marines and other friendlies like they're my children.

Being part of the game's third act I've always thought that the sewer escort mission was a somewhat fair spike in difficulty. It's one of few levels in Jak 2 that requires the full utilization of Jak's skillset to overcome, and with it being a relatively short mission to do in a single run the frustration people have with it really only comes with having the retry it whenever you fail, not a gigantic pain in the ass if you've been evolving as the game goes on.
During my 3rd playthrough of Jak 2 earlier this year I was able to beat the mission in only 3 tries and I've never been prouder, whereas getting the seal piece at the docks leaves me feeling nothing because that mission is genuine bullshit.
Glad to see I'm not the only one willing to defend the sewer escort mission.

On a mostly unrelated sidenote: Seeing how strongly the Daxter levels ranked on this list was a massive plot twist for me because I've never played that game. Making me regret not having a PSP

This takes me back. I was around the same age as you when these came out so I understand your pain of getting through the original 3 games and some of the hard barriers. but I still loved them to death. Spent hours just trying to get unlimited ammo cheats and echo cheats.
Thanks for going down memory lane.

Sometimes I feel like starting a new playthrough of Jak 2, which was my first ever video-game.
Then I remember that the turret mission at the drill platform exists and the idea goes out the window

As a fan of this series since I saw the trailer of Percursor Legacy on that original PS2 demo disc, I absolutely loved this video and I agree with most of you said.
Great work!! You got a new subscriber! 🙂👍

I always Jet-Board the Water Slum escape mission on replays.
Never did the Dark Bomb method tho
It's very doable and the curves on the bridges always seemed like it was implied you should do that rather than brute force your way outta there

Damn didn't think anyone would be making Jak content in 2020. Def gonna watch this whole thing, just play the OG trilogy in a row on PCSX2 to relive that love I had for these games as a child. Honestly these are still such amazing achievements of accomplishment for their time. Sad I feel like we haven't got anything artistically, or thematically similar to this series in a long time

Also for the infamous Slums level in Jak 2 at 27:55 I honestly didn't find it that hard this time around, I just used the hoverboard to zoom past the soldier carriers before they would spawn soldiers and just had to get good at dodging the civilians and learning the pathing, took me a couple of tries but nothing awful. Honestly after beating them all I think I respect Jak 2 the most because it asks the most of you as a player to truly master the games mechanics (Gunplay, platforming, hoverboarding, driving) to not want to beat your head in on some of the levels. Whilst Jak 3 was just painfully easy.

The Tony Hawk one of these was the first of your videos I watched, I'm excited to see a new one.
That also makes me wonder what Hawktober's going to be like.

Wow amazing video, I have seen top 10 level lists but not a full trought every game in a franchise list like this. Amazing job. I completed 1, seen a lot of 2 but then not played any of the others games or seen much from it. But exciting to see as you go trought a lot if not everything that happens in this levels and it is a aspect we forget to use one location at diffrent times, usually people whould seperate them as missions but then this list whould be 5 times bigger.

Maybe this has been pointed out already but 45:41 that's a glitch, sometimes the music doesn't play for that level and you need to get out of the game and come back to solve it. This level uses the Palace/Mar's Tomb music

Also, I noticed when watching this video again that in the Playstation All-Stars footage, it was Sly versus Jak. Perhaps the fact that it was Sly is a possible teaser for a series you’re going to revisit one day?

While I disagreed with a lot of the level ordering in this video, I greatly enjoyed your enthusiasm for the subject. What made up for my earlier disagreements was finding Sentinel Beach and Forbidden Jungle were at the top where they belonged. Great video.

JaD The Precursor Legacy is my absolute favourite game of the franchise, and the one I always find myself going back to the most. I just wish the next Jak game would explore more of the precurosr lore and what the machines and monoliths were useful for. The whole collectathon platformer style of the first game is why I love it so much, though you don't see many of these types of games anymore

New Haven was built in between the end of the first war and the start of the second war; I assume there was a pause where things were peaceful.
