Shawn James is the first “real” off grid channel I found that was true. Lots of differences as he lives in Canada. He gave up his job in corporate and bought land to establish an off grid life. I gotta watch it again 😂 - I’m actually sending this video to my husband, adult daughters and son-in-law so they know the reason why I came up with the crazy dream of owning lots of acres and all living together to build something fantastic. It’s definitely a work in progress: I watched you for years, got hooked, and I bought your book. We are now focusing on your suggestions, we are consolidating and saving, learning to live with less, purging, buying smart, learning to eat differently, preparing our bodies…and in 2.5 years we will buy the land. I've been following you three and now little bean, since the NYX daze.
I live rurally but on the grid. I do maintain backup apparatuses for times when the grid goes down which is inevitable every winter. I did live off grid a few years when I left an abusive spouse and couldn't afford a conventional lifestyle.

Glad to see your ‘wild’ ideas are fruiting! I’ve held on to many similar philosophies, and walked a few. Another challenge you have not mentioned is your team. I spent many years wandering the Rockies as a bachelor before I found a team mate who refuses to live beyond means (though her early home mortgage equity has been pivotal). You two are very fortunate to have found each other at a young age! Hey! I once rented an ‘off grid’ bedroom from a friend for cheap. What made it all work is the one object i miss most from my bachelor days - my hydronic heated concrete bed…. I have slept on a hard floor/plank like a samurai since 2001, a 96F rock with a thin fleece blanket/sheet was heavenly to sleep on. It kept my ‘off grid’ room at 60F all winter in Northern Utah and my friend never noticed an increase in the electric bill. If your floors are cold concrete, this idea could really help balance your home’s 3 season energy budget. It would provide a reliably warm place to recover/wait for the wood stove to catch up, keep a room from freezing while you are away, dry clothes, warm boots, and also facilitate your bodies taking cool showers (conduction is the best heat transfer method, and it’s far less energy costly to heat a body than to heat a house. I used a 208V on demand tankless booster water heater in a closed distilled water/glycol loop with expansion tank, top steam blowoff vent, oxygen barrier PEX tubing. It was three sidewalk sized slabs stacked together, leveled 2 inches off the floor on bolt heads threaded into poured-in PVC pipe inserts. Perhaps a dedicated tankless propane heater or hybrid wood heater would work for y’all? Cheers, keep up the free living!

SERIOUSLY...brilliant. :) I almost didn't click on the video - as if I wasn't sure if it was weird with the thumbnail not being obvious it was Barron. Well done. And yes, not easy. We moved from the city, living on the water, and boat life to acres of land and a home in desperate need of repair - no kitchen for two years and the challenges of projects on every corner. Some days are harder than others and dealing with the mess when I'm all about organization and neat, neat, neat...tidy. I remind myself how blessed I am to live in this home that's paid for. I could never go back to the city. Thanks for sharing and hats off to Barron.

Nice thumbnail. I'm two minutes into this episode and I like how you summed up the early times of your show. I really enjoyed the time with the Subaru and the repairs,the many trips,the many outdoor and inside cooking,the stuck in the snow. It was all marvelous and inspired how I camp. I didn't watch much when the house was being built but I love this episode where everything is all put in perspective.

Build a DIY septic tanks out of 50 gal drums or even a bigger IBC tank and pvc pipes. I have heard of those DIY systems flawlessly working more than 20 years with a family of 4 using it every day. You can find plenty of videos showing how to do this, and it would absolutely work for you. F the price of those septic tanks, pure robbery.
