Camera boom arm from monopod and super clamp

- A boom or horizontal arm for a camera can be a great way to get overhead shots for product photography or overhead video for tutorial videos. I thought I would try making an arm using my monopod and a super clamp. Personally I think it came out pretty good.

After many failed 3d printed tries of making a boom arm adapter for my mono, that I ran across this. Dude for 25ish bucks this is genius, I didn't even know they sold these. (consumer) I will say you need a good tripod but I was lucky to have one. I got mine today and and it worked perfect! THANK YOU!!
JOHN is there anything you can not do first you are a blacksmith a teacher of the trade carpenter a movie director a camera man and boom operator wow I like the off topic videos they show how much time and work you put in to help young and old smiths so thank you sir cheers from AUSTRALIA
Smart guy, thanks a lot. All the best from Frankfurt/Germany, Daniel
Thanks for watching!
Brilliant - you just saved me $200 bucks. I have both iFootage tripods and monopods - along w/ a dozen super clamps. It never crossed my mind to link them for a quick and easy horizontal setup.
Good tip.I just need the super clamp and voila. The monopod with its fluid head and the tripod I already have.
Brilliant!! Great information and explanation. Thank you.
I'm glad I found your video. I bought a Manfrotto super clamp and attached my monopod to my tripod (both that I already had with their ballheads) and have a boom arm for the price of the clamp. Thanks, this saved money and it will work for me.
Glad I could help!
Great! Been in video for 10 yrs. This video was one of the most practical DIY vids I’ve seen. Thank u!
Glad it was helpful!
Just wanted to say thank you for posting this tip. I've had a carbonfiber monopod that's been sitting idle for years. Toss in the magic clamp and a beefy video head (all of which I had scattered amongst my equipment stash and voila - instant overhead camera. Stellar work!
I'm glad it was helpful
Just put a counterweight on the other end of the monopod to stop it tipping. And as I've said before, you're a blacksmith and have made some quite ingenious and technical things in the past. Use the current clamp (attaching to the monopod) and tripod and replace anything in between with good old heavy steel. Just look at the points where it wobbles and change them. I look forward to a possible video in the future 😊👍👍👍
Using a blacksmiths approach to a precision fluid video head might be a bit of a mismatch.
@@JohnSwitzer that's probably the mistake I keep making in life....... "that looks easy enough to fix"............ or more to the point, not even stopping to think and just going for it!! Some of my best creations have come from thinking that way........ as well as some item's that end up in a bin LOL
I suppose you could still try the counterweight though....
Man you're a genius, it's gonna be a while before I can buy the M1 III crane, and even then there are some situations where it might be to cumbersome so I'm gonna get this, thanks.
TY. 1st I think I'll boom a mic up there, later a camera or light.
As much as I tinker with things, I’m ashamed to admit I’ve never thought of this!!! THANK-YOU!!! 👍🏻👌🏻👍🏻 (hope your knee turned out ok)
Great video John
Great video. Did you try out the following with this setup: Let the boom go up at appr 45 degrees, mount the camera pointing horizontally (or even a bit upwards) towards the rotation axis of the fluid head - and then position yourself or any other person close to the camera-less part of your monopod and let everything rotate (yes, the actor needs to turn with the rotating camera). Saw some kind of this shot somewhere else, and it was like magic.
Really good video ❤❤
The Switzer Super Connector. Great video John good use of standard gear for a complex job
That’s awesome John! Great job!
Thanks
this is great thank you
Very nice! Thanks for sharing!
Great idea! Thanks!
Thank you for sharing this. I'd been using an old enlarger stand without the enlarger! It is nowhere near as flexible as your solution. Great video!
I'm grateful that you tube suggested this video, thanks from India
So nice of you
That set up looks good John should be a valued asset to your filming. Please watch yourself and that leg out doors, don't want to exacerbate the injury.
A gimabled head for the camera to attach to would keep the camera steady and leveled for nice pan shots. Just don’t know if they make a steady cam attachment to do that.
I actually have a gimbal that I can use with this. I just haven't had the time to try it out yet.
Slick setup .. nice way to get a clean artistic shot of process and produce, definitely will keep it in mind !! looking nice and green around the homestead :)
Good idea👍👍Hope the bum leg is better soon John
Well on the mend
This seems like it would be a lotttt more solid than most overhead rigs I’ve seen, well done
I went to a longer QR plate with two clamps and now its very solid.
What a GREAT video/hack/diy you made here!!! I own a professional manfrotto tripod + bogen head and release, I spent over $400 & I have been wanting overhead capabilities for my flat lay photography. I was THIs. close to ordering the Neewer overhead tripod (And my only gripe with that tripod, is the fact that the boom arm is only about a foot at most.. You have made my week lol! Ordering a couple of super clamps, for a fraction of the price right now!!
Glad it was helpful!
Good thinking. The thing is: a super clamp is needed anyway, it can be used with a magic arm and in other situations, so with this little investment you gain an entire set of options.
I have 6 of them and still have trouble finding one when I need it.
@@JohnSwitzer 😊
Top of the day to you John. A quick and cheap trick to stabilize tippi tripods is to fix a bag of pebbles or sand to the tripod so it dangles in between the 3 legs. If it works for surf fishing and rods with 4m+ length it will work with a small boom and cam for sure too.
The tripod is set up for a weight, that just wasn't the main point of the video.
@@JohnSwitzer First of thx for replying. No worries, I got you the first time, just didn´t think about the tripod being possibly set up for weights allready.
Curious to see what´s up next on the J.S.-Inventions- and Improvementlist. Have a good one. Smartie
Very nice ❤
Really make sense! Great Idea!
This is amazing I was about to bug a new tripod that does this however I have all these products and home and just tried this and it’s perfect!!!
How about the gimbal you have. That may make the shots smoother too. Try a counter weight on the other end of the mono pod so the tripod doesn’t tip over. This setup may help with the mic problem you been having. Just thinking aloud ok my friend have a good weekend and hope your knee heals up fast. Thx for sharing .....Paul
I plan on giving that a try when I have the time
Hi John. Thank you for sharing this. I had the same idea, and wanted to see if it actually works or if I'm being stupid. Lol.
I did go to a tripod head that has a plate large enough to get two super clamps on it. Much stronger.
Excellent ingenuity, John. If money was no object, an x & y axis ceiling mounted servo controlled track system... and if a frog had wings, he wouldn't have such a sore rear end! 🐾🔥⚒
Stick a weight (bag with some sand) at the opposite end of the "boom pole" like they do with camera cranes. Adjust the weight (amount of sand) to balance the whole contraption and you will have a more stable situation and you don't run the risk of your camera crushing into the floor when you accidentally let go of the boom pole. Also when the thing is balanced you can make nice pan shots. Tip: always make sure to carry an elastic band. Attach that to the bottom end of the boom pole. By pulling on the elastic band instead of the boom pole itself you will get amazingly smooth pans.
windmill10 any suggested alternatives to sand?
@@JanineMKartist Water, concrete, rocks, fish, gold etc. Avoid lead.. That's toxic.
I think that is an awesome ad hoc setup. Yes, it might be nice to have a self leveling joint on the camera (something that would allow you to set the pan/tilt of the camera, and would keep that same setting regardless of how you moved the boom), but that would add considerable weight, complexity, or both to an otherwise simple yet flexible setup.
And don't worry, very soon your channel will be large enough that manufacturers WILL listen to your suggestions, and maybe even send you early products for test.
Great video (as always!), and I will be interested in seeing what you (and your other other viewers) come up with.
Wow John! Aren't you getting creative. Great idea though and possibilities for some really great shots I think. My shots are all stills of my work beause I don't do video's as I just can't figure out the editing software. You and I are the same age and I used to blame it on not being from the computer generation but you figured it out. Maybe I will some day also.
I never started making videos with this kind of stuff in mind. But like many things it changes and evolves the deeper you get into it. The first videos were just as shot with no editing
Good Afternoon , John
You are discovering more useful equipment , all the time ! You are improving your capabilities for
Outstanding Video Shots !
I am slowly , getting a Better quality camera equipment !
Thank you so much for pointing out the Pros and Cons about
The Equipment !
Take Care and Be Safe !
Keep Hammering !
thank you for the video! yes clamps seem to be able to solve some of those challenges. I am trying to figure out if I can add an overhead arm to the Manfrotto Element (lightweight travel simple tripod). of course it would have to be used with weights to prevent the flipping. I like your set-up and also boom idea, just it is a bit heavy for my case right now.
Get a stronger tripod lol
Great idea! Thanks so much for sharing :)!
I did the exact same thing and was wondering if it's good enough or if I should get a pro version. My system does work though. I also put a counter-weight at the back of the monopod.
Good idea!
Buen trabajo gracias. Great Job Thank You Very Much
Wow thank you
John 14-20 screw instead of a quick release is much better. Take my word when you are using 12 pound view camera you need the strongest connection you can get. There are tripods that have bigger screws also. That I would use on my 8x20” view camera that weighted close to 20#. But for the camera you are using quick disconnects are fine.
I wish I had a nice tripod head that had a screw instead of quick release. But it seems like everything of decent quality is quick release only. I could mount directly to the tripod 3/6 x 16 but then I loose the pan and tilt possibilities
You could also use a counterweight if it gets too front heavy. This is a good idea for a mic stand, in my opinion.😊
Yes you can, its pretty simple to rig up.
Genius. Just need to buy a superclamp (which i'm sure i can use for other things too) and I'm good to go 👍
Super clamps a really handy, I think I have 5 of them now.
OMG BRILLIANT!
Hey bud I love your off topic! So exciting!!
John, Add a counter weight to the bottom of the momo pod equal to the camera and upper momopod weight. Adjusting the bottom extension position to achieve a good balance. You are a blacksmith - make one!
If I use it in situations where the weight is needed for stability I will certainly do that. But making a precision fluid video head requires a different approach than typical blacksmithing. Having never been a machinist I don't tend to work to those types of tolerances.
gracias maestro, saludos desde colombia.
Why not a lighting stand boom arm adapter? They usually have a spigot hole, you can insert a spigot with whatever end can fit on fluid head quick release plate. Just my first thought. Haven't tried myself
Mostly because I already have the monopod.
cool Idea
What if you put the clamp on the second extension and then have a weigth at the back extension.
yes you could.
I just hope it will fit over the round table I’ll
Be working on without getting in the way. Not sure yet if I’ll have to set one leg up on the table. I need the camera to be able to see me doing various art projects .wont know till I but the clamps to put it together. Do I need counter weights ?
Counter weights would be a good idea. But it depends a little on the length you have out as well as camera weight. I've set mine up with a lighter ball head on the skinny end of the mono pod so the heavier end is serving as a counterweight to some degree.
Clever 👍👍👍👍work around a need or problem.... 💪💪💪🤗🇨🇭
Thanks for sharing this. I’m thinking of getting the manfrotto monopod that comes with a video head. That head is the 500 and has a bigger base than the one you have here. I think I saw another who used two mini clamps instead of one . I wonder if that would make it more stable. What I’m thinking of doing as well is improving my old clunky tripod by putting the video head on that for now and sue the mo iPod as the boom. I do eventually want to get one of those tripods with the 90 degree arm though, the thing I was thinking about that is the arm on those is a bit short and in a fixed position. So I’m thinking what if I put the makeshift boom on that when I eventually get it and put out the 90 degree arm. I could move the tripod further back and the boom would be 90 degrees to the tripod arm. Could be good to tilt that and get some different positions or angles when doing overhead video or unique overhead shots of my paintings/art, so that’s what I’ve been mulling over. Anyway I’m going to try those mini clamps. www.amazon.com/Smallrig-Thread-Cameras-Umbrellas-Shelves/dp/B0062U2M4E/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?dchild=1&keywords=smallrig+super+clamp&qid=1594212064&sr=8-1-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUEyVEdIOVZGMkozMkVQJmVuY3J5cHRlZElkPUEwMTU0NzQ4MUQzVk8yR0Y2SDIxWCZlbmNyeXB0ZWRBZElkPUEwNTQyOTk1M1BIWVJNWFoyQjJGWCZ3aWRnZXROYW1lPXNwX2F0ZiZhY3Rpb249Y2xpY2tSZWRpcmVjdCZkb05vdExvZ0NsaWNrPXRydWU=
I have gone to a longer quick release with a pair of manfrotto super clamps. It is much more stable
John Switzer just bought my set up. I ended up getting the manfrotto because it was on sale. Monopod with video head.
My first you tube video will be about making a paper mache and clay baby dragon with more art rather than craft based techniques . For adults or for parents to do with or for their kids. My focus is on my art
So I may not be an avid you tuber I’ll see where it all takes me. I think I may also want to review some of my art and technical stuff for artists. So I’m trying to keep my equipment costs as
Low as possible without buying cheap crap. Your video here was a big help in my purchase decision. I almost got your monopod here but the manfrotto with the sale price ended up being my choice.
John Switzer . Hmm yes. I got the manfrotto aluminum monopod so I’ll need something that can hold it secure. It’s a bit heavier than I thought it would be. I thought about three of those cheaper clamps. Need to figure out an alternative to sand for sand bags for counterbalance . Any suggestions ? I put my old smaller tripod head on the monopod.
Been thinking about this setup and stumbled upon your video. Thanks for sharing. Are you still using this setup?.
I do use it occasionally, mostly for the overhead stuff
Clever! Thanks!
John - I've been trying to figure out how to get a horizontal arm for my manfrotto tripod. this set up is awesome because I also have a manfrotto monopod. What I do not understand is how I attach the super clamp to my tripod. Can you help me with this cause I am setting up to shoot indoors for the winter and really want an arm. Thanks so much!
The super clamp has a threaded mounting point just like a camera and you can attach it to the tripod the same way you do your camera. However I found a tripod head with a long sliding plate that allows for two clamps is much more solid.
@@JohnSwitzer thanks John!
..HELP PLEASE..
I’m looking for a
Industry Standard 1/4-20 screw thread
(basic camera shoe mount)
mounted at the top, or tip, of a monopole.
While that monopole is attached to possibly a dual desk clamp.
I have looked quite a bit and I cannot find a camera shoe mount that is attached at the end of a pole anywhere.
The pole will stand vertically and
at the top of the pole is a standard industry camera shoe mount to mount a 35 mm camera at the top of that pole.
John, wait till you get into drones. They are fun to use and for some reason, the kids run feom them. Lol
I still haven't thought of good excuse to buy a drone, but they do sound like fun.
Just saved me $125 thanks
He deserves better views
sir instead of the superclamp can i use a crab clamp.
Possibly. I have gone to a pair of clamps, much more solid
I did the samething used what was already in my kit
Check out the vanguard Alta pro tripod
Interesting and certainly looks good, but part of my goal was to use what I had on hand, at least to start with
Just a suggestion I have one and I really like it in my crowded shop I very rarely use it without the boom extended. It is shorter than the monopod but I think it is sturdier
The truth is that I'm a sucker for cool tools, so you never know what might show up
I was just about to suggest this very tripod. I have 2 and they are fantastic. Especially if you are looking for a taller tripod (70") or one that's as flexible as a gymnast.
What sold me was that I can swap out the head with another threaded attachment and not rely on just the quick release plate to secure my gear.
Did you share a link of that alternate tripod head?
I thought it was down in the video description. But I may not have found one.
@@JohnSwitzer thank you
All this video equipment to make the videos better is going to take space in the shop so maybe another addition is doing the the forge
Luckily this didn't require any new equipment, just using what I have in a different way
I’ve been watching for a long time and your videos have gotten a lot better and you have stayed true to the art of teaching not just posting random videos to get likes
Смешной мужик.)
Haven't found it yet?
Try looking at Swiss Arca rails or rather all the profesional gera that use that standard.
Wait a second, Aren't you a crafty guy who makes all kinds of stuff and has a lathe and a mill and all sorts of knowledge of materials etc? Why are you waiting for them to make a solution for you? Heh heh, I am sure that you have other obligations.
No mill here. Plus I don't think in terms of 1/10,000 of an inch. More like 1/8" is close and make ot fit with a hammer. Thats a vastly different mindset than what it would take to make a fluid video head.
@@JohnSwitzer I am the king of overestimating my ability and other's so that explanation makes a lot of sense.
Smart man. Y spend hard earned $ on something that technically u didn't need as u already have the stuff 2 adapt 1. If everybody used their heads a little bit more 4 stuff like that. this equipment wouldn't b so expensive cuz it wouldn't b as necessary 2 own
