  • Round seven of the 1955 Championship for Grand Prix Legends at the Nürburgring, Germany. Driven with the Mercedes-Benz W196 Streamliner, played with a Xbox 360 controller. This is a 'Short Pro' race with realistic damage, but with adjusted the racelenght so it's only 50% of what it normally would be. The AI drives at the default speed.
The amazing 1955 Mod was released in May of 2017. Besides the 1955 carset it also introduces a new 'brake fade' mechanic. This is shown with a light indicator in the cockpit. Green means good, yellow shows signs of overheating and red means your brakes are basically gone. This will really put your patience to the test.

From a graphics standpoint, while technically inferior when compared to modern sims there's just something really aesthetically pleasing about this game and in some ways I prefer it. I've watched a lot of GPL gameplay videos and the majority of them have left me with this impression.
I don't know if it is purely down to a talented modding community, but each track seems to have a really distinct identity, character and atmosphere that makes them feel really convincing.

Yep, GPL makes me feel like I'm a kid again, it fuels my imagination with classic tracks atmosphere, like no other sim can ;)

GPL does not have light sources or shadows like games today -- the shadows are lovingly painted by hand, making them look great, but at a fixed time-of-day. Newer games support changing time-of-day, weather etc, but the final look is a compromise. BTW there is a current well-known racing sim that still does lighting the old-fashioned way (edit: enhanced a bit) -- can you guess which one it is?

Rustic looking graphics can be very appealing for some folks, for me it gives me a warm feeling like listening to a vinyl record.

Its very strange but i feel the same. Perfect mix of 2d and 3d... the circuits feel more natural... the track and nature converged perfectly. I love those trees and bushes.. damn.. its a pleasure to drive at top speed watching the scenery... a lot of curves.. stretch passages... city roads.. rustic paved.. unique sections for enjoy.. one track have much to offer than actual ones. Every part of the race make me feel diferent... all blend together makes this game last forever. Im in love with GPL... and more when i discover the track repository.

It’s almost akin to being in a video of an old race as opposed to being there for real similar the difference between extremely accurate digital vs reel to reel.

I'm really impressed at how well they represented this track in 1998. Having no GUI in sims is always a nice feeling as well.

Nice driving! I really need to practice a lot more to get to this level! Did just a video with the W196 as well, only that it was the not streamedlined version! Anyway, I had a lot of fun, it's very rewarding to drive those cars!

Watching through the series is quite fun. Though this race does illustrate my feeling of you sometimes making odd car choices for the given track. I'd think this car and the Lancia would be better choices for Reims and Monza, while the Gordini seems like a preferable option for a tighter circuit.
The modding team did a wonderful job, though I kind of wish they'd gone with the Gordini T32 rather than the T16.
And it's rather unfortunate that the Mercedes is the only one of the streamliners that gets some real attention. The Maserati 250F, Connaught Type B, Lancia D50, and Vanwall VW6 all had streamlined versions as well.

This may be the 1955 mod, but this track is not correct for 1955. The Hohenrain chicane, right before start/finish, wasn't there back then. It was added in 1967.

Yeah, and there are a couple other bits that seem like they're the version they came to with the round of circuit upgrades done for 1973.
