  • One of the most important and influential leaders in Milwaukee was civil rights activist Vel Phillips. She was the first black woman elected to Milwaukee's Common Council, where she fought tirelessly for fair housing. Also, she hosted a radio program, which discussed current issues in Milwaukee as well as black history. Join us as we examine her life, as well as reflect on how her witness can inspire our own lives.
As an added bonus, we will read a transcript of The Meaning of Jesus to Black Slaves, a radio segment in which she discussed the history and power of spirituals.
