- Abbey Lincoln started her career in the mid-50s and continued to cut high quality records until her late 70s. This song was originally published on her 1961 album titled Straight Ahead. Originally a Billie Holiday song, she recorded it with Coleman Hawkins, Eric Dolphy, Booker Little, Mal Waldron and Max Roach.
Remark: I do not own the rights to this song. Just posting as a fan.
This version of Left Alone is hands down the most beautiful, heartbreaking, masterpiece ever to be sung.
Indeedy.
A voice brimming, overflowing with emotion. She remained an astonishing talent throughout her career as well as a talent scout scooping up the new talent as it emerged.
Through her I discovered Steve Coleman back in the 80’s.
Empty moment by Left alone…🖤
Such a masterpiece
The way Abbey sings the words "... or perhaps ..." in the song's last verse ... it's totally heartbreaking, especially knowing that the autobiographical lyrics are Billie Holiday's. It's one of the most memorable vocal phrases I've ever heard. A magnificent singer and actress.
Beautiful lady... this song reminds me of Billy Holiday. I stopped listening to songs like this no matter how beautiful. I do not want this in my life. I would rather sing the beautiful songs of The Lord about heaven and His love. That is what I want in my life.❤❤❤
Beautiful lady❤
I first heard of her today. ❤ 10/17/2024 5:18 pm ET
This is straight from the heart. I'm glad I heard it. I feel it.
A very talented singer and actor, as well as a social activist. Had the great honor of meeting her in San Francisco. One of my all time favorites.
Absolutely exquisite. Nothing else to say really. Timeless and beautiful. That you so much for this.
What talent! So beautiful! Not only is Abbey magnificent, as always, but the arrangement of this song and the quality of playing here is just masterful! Thanks!
Left alone - Burning Gardens, anyone?
yeees
:.)
Yep
That's where I'm here from.
Beautiful...just beautifull
Killing... And Hawk's solo too!
Billie Holiday / Mal Waldron
Where's the love that's made to fill my heart?
Where's the one from whom I'll never part?
First they hurt me, then desert me
I'm left alone, all alone
There's no house that I can call my home
There's no place from which I'll never roam
Town or city, it's a pity
I'm left alone, all alone
Seek and find they always say
But up to now it's not that way
Maybe fate has let him pass me by
Or perhaps we'll meet before I die
Hearts will open, but until then
I'm left alone, all alone

Wonderful, so far down!
thank you Abbey ...
Thanks so much for posting, Viktor. It's one of the most treasured albums in my collection, but having RUclips access has made it so much easier to share with my jazz-loving friends.
I'm glad you like it, Howard. I posted it many years ago when I discovered it wasn't available on YT. I never imagined it would get so many views.
Haunting. Beautiful.
Absolutely!
Superb.

WoW!
I love those lyrics ... Mal Wadron?
I had once seen the lyrics credited to Mal Waldron, but most places credit Billie Holliday. I should have left a trail of crumbs through the wilderness.
wow
I think we miss the trombone player. Julian Priester perhaps?
