    I cheat. I have the inner bowl that holds the charcoal lined with several layers of aluminum foil. When it becomes crusty from incense residue I change out the foil. On Sundays I make sure that I have a few minutes to spare and I use tongs from the kitchen and light the charcoal using the gas range. The usually late arrivals have gotten used to seeing me running through the kitchen and parish hall heading for the narthex.

    Those coals are self lighting all you need to do it touch the ridges with a lighted taper. It is much easier and safer that way.

    Why is it some charcoal emit small "explosions" which chip pieces off the charcoal - so the frankincense resin tends to drip off the sides?

    • @andrewsmith9785
      @andrewsmith9785 3 года назад +2

      It's so they light quicker. The charcoals that pop/explodes like the one shown are known as quick-lighting charcoals. They have a accelerant in them which starts going off when you touch a flame to it (it kind of smells like gunpowder to me, but I don't actually know what the accelerant is). If this was a normal charcoal, you would need to heat it in a fire or another heat source (like the burner on a stove).

    • @gilbs72
      @gilbs72 3 года назад +2

      @@andrewsmith9785 It sure like gunpowder (which is likely what it is). I guess my point is there has to be emphasis on quality-control. Sometimes a small chip can fly into altar cloth or table cloth. Not to mention, the resin drips thru the break in the coal which is a waste.

    • @timsuspanic7905
      @timsuspanic7905 Год назад +1

      Both the charcoal and incense burn away to ashes unless you dump them into a container of water to put them out. We used to simply go outside and dump the burned charcoal in the street near the curb.

      @@DominicNJ73 In Liturgy it’s always good to offer the best we can, as it is a foretaste of the eternal heavenly liturgy. The thurible of 4 chains, has 3 outer (holy trinity) and a centra chain representing the oneness of the trinity.
      It’s not an issue to have of or use a single chain thurible, I just prefer seeing a chained thurible being used. That’s all.

      Dude, there’s no need to be angry. God was upset with Israel’s vain worship at that time, but incense continues to be joined at the hip with worship, especially prayer. Right now the angels and saints’ prayers are joined with incense in the presence of the Lamb who was slain but now stands.

      Hi Romeo. I've never heard this before, and it's understandable to wonder what it means in light of the Church's use of incense. One of the reasons we use incense is because in Revelation it says the incense represents our prayers rising to heaven. I think context may also be important regarding Isaiah 1:13 regarding why God was saying this. God Bless you!!!

      Adonis, the favourite of Venus, slain by a wild boar, as feigned by the heathen poets, and which being here represented by an idol, is lamented by the female worshippers of that goddess. In Hebrew the name is Tammuz, (Challoner) which means "concealed," as Adonis signifies "my lord." This idol, which the Egyptians called Osiris, was placed in a coffin, and bewailed till it was pretended he was come to life, when rejoicings took place. Obscene pictures were carried about; and the more honest pagans were ashamed of these practices, which began in Egypt, and became almost general. Moses alludes to them, Leviticus xix. 27., and Deuteronomy xiv. 1. (Calmet) --- David and Solomon say that the image was made of brass, with eyes of lead, which seemed to weep, melting when it was hot. (Worthington) --- But this is destitute of proof.
      That chapter and verses have nothing to do with Catholicism. You have no truth within you, rather you make a false equivalency fallacy and think if something is Catholic it’s automatically wrong.
