Hey! I'm Alanna - a twenty-something documenting my life as a Canadian living in England.
I share the ups and downs of an expat living abroad and what it's really like living in the UK. It's not always easy, but there's been so many wonderful experiences, too. I post a RUclips video every Tuesday & Friday plus an additional video every Saturday on my Patreon account. I also livestream every Wednesday and Sunday at 5:30pm GMT/BST on Twitch.

The answer to the window/ cooler pipe: go to the lumber yard, get a piece of plywood to put in the gap. Drill a hole in the plywood for the pipe, bring the window down to meet the plywood.

As a matter of interest, noticing your brick walls, you can tell an old house from a relatively new one (decades more than just years) by the size of the bricks. As you can imagine older houses had bricks with the measures in imperial sizes I.e. inches and new stuff in metric. Imperial bricks are noticeably bigger than metric and also older bricks are more non standard colour of brick(bit like a dark rainbow style) and also rougher consistency to them, but you get the idea. I noticed your brick wall had quite large bricks compared to what would be considered normal modern sizes. There is also different types of brick depending on the use, bricks for old chimneys had to withstand the hear of the coal or wood fires so they were called engineering bricks I think, this is all layman’s knowledge but again you get the idea. You seem to have a nice home there and thank you for the tour, have a wonderful stay as long as you live there.
    Cheers To you both

Couple suggestions: For the bathtub room - look on Amazon or a local DIY store for a bathtub hose with a shower head on one end and a tub faucet adapter that will fit your tub faucet. You could also probably find a strong suction cup that would stick to the wall and hold up the shower head. For the bedroom window that’s ‘agape’ ( lol ) see if you can get some thick clear sheets of plastic to put up on the inside of the window to cut down on the draft. 🙂

Just a word of support: I totally get why you can not "just buy a house". I'm 39 and, finally, last year, my partner and I manage to buy a house. It's a struggle and you can always afford a higher rent than you'll pay if you bought a house to the bank - BUT in Portugal we need to give 10% of the property value upfront PLUS taxes and other shenanigans. More over, I did not have a proper contract with my employer, so no bank would lend me the money. I completely understand you not being able to buy a house. Hang in there. Thanks for the tour :)

Awesome kitchen & dining area, that would put some New Zealand homes to shame! 100% agree that the ensuite is redundant with the bathroom being so close. Rip out the bath and put the shower in there, convert the ensuite into a walk in wardrobe. That would be much better. That's one hell of a lot of shoes for two people!

I have roll-around AC unit since my apartment has nothing built-in. I too have a heat exhaust hose (4-inch?) that connects to my window. I also had to do some custom work as my window cranks open and the kit that came with the LG brand unit was meant for sash windows..!! Mine doesn’t have a jet-engine sound, but I don’t mind the “white noise.” It actually puts me to sleep..!!

Great flat. All that matters is that you enjoy living there, and it makes financial sense for you. If you need more storage, a floor to ceiling storage unit in your en-suite would give you a large cupboard space and not take up much room. Movable room dividers (wood, fabric, wicker etc) would look quite nice in front of your under stairs space. Hiding both the gym equipment and any other stuff you need to keep there.

Finally watching your flat tour video. You picked a really adorable flat - I too appreciate the floors, brick walls and age of the property. Strips of foam can help block the gaps in your window, like the window unit air conditioners used in North America. Anyway, thumbs up to renting! Buying isn’t for everyone one. I enjoy the financial freedom renting affords me - I can travel or shop for example while homeowners are using their money fixing their homes.

I was struggling to think what about British foods could have gotten you banned from Twitch and then remembered the meatball-like food beginning with 'F' and yep, that would have done it 😬

Try some insulation strips between the window edge and the air conditioner edge. Keeps the bugs out as well. Go to a sewing shop or sewing section in a shop and pick up some quilt filler. It is cheap and not loose stuffing. It will cover the lower section and block light out. You might even get it to fill the gaps by folding and stuffing it between.
