If any zoo is really interested in Gentaro being matched with one of their females, I would assume they would likely pay for the cost to have him shipped.

@@sonyawilson1000 I think the main factor is that there are no funds available to pay for renovations. Ryan didn't Kyoto Zoo implement a "crowd funding" to raise money in the past? I also heard that the zoo will not accept overseas donations. Is that correct?

It’s tricky to introduce a new silverback into an already well established troop. Gorillas don’t like change, and just like humans they need time to grieve the loss of one of their own. They’re also very protective of their young. If Gentaro was introduced to the females at Toronto Zoo now, they’d probably make mincemeat of him. He’s got a long healthy life ahead of him and is still very happy where he is now; no need to rush anything.

Yes, it was very nice of them to reply. I hope Gentaro gets to meet a lovely lady too. I think he will be a great dad and husband. It’s just finding the right fit. I’m assuming they would want to be very sure before moving him abroad. There’s a lot of research that goes into finding potential mates. They still have not replaced Winston. Those ladies are without a SB right now.

Sadly, I knew in my heart this would probably be the outcome, due to my experience with these programs and in this field. On the other hand, a patient has to wait for one's turn , for example hospitalize to take a surgery. Finally a new visitor to the kyoto city zoo called Gentaro another silverback after seeing Momotaro. From behind , it is difficult to tell apart Momotaro and Gentaro.
@@Gorilla-Life Hi Ryan. I was born and raised in Vancouver, Canada but live in the USA now. Yes medical care is cheap, not quite free but very very low cost. You are right on the wait though. If its life threatening and you need emergency care you will get it immediately but if its something they dont deem emergency you have to wait in line. Socialized medicine is fine until you want something done fast. In the States I can get whatever I want as fast as I want but it cost $$$$$. Ive had Canadian friends come to the USA and pay for a procedure just to get it done quicker. For instance, a pain block. People with Lumbar Spine problems that need surgery get pain blocks until they can schedule you for surgery. It can take months and months to get in for a pain block. In the USA you can get in next week. If you want back surgery you can get in pretty fast, usually within 30 days in America but costs $$$$$. In Canada back surgery maybe takes a year or more but its almost free. Thats the main difference.

Before reading GL-Ryan comments about Toronto Zoo not wanting Gentaro I got excited. I live in Toronto and thought that would be great if Gentaro is moved here. I could visit him in person. I just hope there is news this year about Gentaro’s future and hopefully it will be with a new mate.

@@JohnBock-nq9lr I read an article, months ago, about difficulties with American and European zoos in cooperating with Japanese zoos, as far as agreeing transfer of Gorillas and other animals. Seems because of Japanese zoos difference in policy when it comes to care and habitat, American and European zoos are reluctant to any trade agreements as far as sending their animals to zoos in Japan which in turn cause Japan to agree to any transfer of their animals. Tit for Tat?…... I would provide a link but this was months ago and I didn’t save.

When the zoo raises a gorilla family they need to take responsibility for placing the young silverbacks in a home somewhere else. This is on the zoo's that have these gorilla families. It's not right that no future planning is done. This should be a prerequisite for housing gorilla families, even a law.

@@tracey9116 hes not young. Hes a 13yo silverback who is so miserable bc hes with a family he doesnt want to be with anymore, and has no access to females. Hes essentially being tortured by denying him what his nature tells him he should have done years ago. You can see how frustrated and sad he is in every video. He is extremely unhappy, and he should be. The zoo has said numerous times he needs to be moved. He and his father are going to kill each other. But its very difficult to find a suitable place.
Among many other things, they have to consider whether it fits into the family structure of the target troop. The character of females, for example, may not be compatible with a young and inexperienced male. It's complicated 😓.
@@trenken he's still young by species programs standards, fully mature, but still young. You do realize many of our blackbacks/silverbacks are neutered, correct? It would be my fear that Gentaro would be moved then favoritism would cause the end of his lineage.

Gentaro needs a new home 🏡. He needs at least two female mates. What about Joann at San Diego Zoo? Winston recently died, leaving two older females, and two daughters. Joann is closer to Gentaro 's age and her younger sister too young to leave her mother. Anyway, why not consider a zoo outside Japan and one in America? After all, it is about Gentaro and his needs! 😊❤😊
@@ellenknell9645it's not as easy as some think. I worked in this system for 40+ years before retiring in 2023, but still network and am involved in conservation. Some of the people in our programs are cliquey placing their opinions before the need of the species. Gentaro is a prize as a Western Lowland, especially a captive one. I wish he could go to Prague because their success has been two births last year. That's just my opinion, though.
Gentaro will be fine. The zoos have a network with other zoos and sanctuaries. It takes time to match an animal that needs to be moved elsewhere. There's so much planning involved in executing the move as well. I'm looking forward to when this zoo makes the announcement of where Gentaro's new home will be.
Unfortunately, if Chiba Zoo owns him it’s up to that zoo to decide, unfortunately what we see in Japan is an unwillingness to get on board with the national programs, there seems to be real issues if zoos in other countries do not want to send gorillas to Japan. No disrespect GL but until Japan Zoos come together and put their animals needs first it’s unlikely Gentaro or any gorillas in Japan have a future.
You can also reach out to the Cincinnati Zoo, the Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago and Disney's Animal Kingdom in Orlando, FL.. They all have bachelor troops.
You have to think about Genki. Her depression if her son leaves. She already bit off her fingers years ago!! Figure out how to keep them together. Maybe separate them by mesh?

Japan has a gorilla exchange agreement with Europe. It is possible that Gentaro finds destiny in one of our singles groups. Maybe in Spain, something that would make me very happy because his grandmother Momoko traveled from here to Japan. Maybe Tenerife Loro Park...

Im sure Im not saying anything you dont already know but until that situation changes its going to be hard to find a foreign country who will welcome Gentaro. I pray Gentaro can be accepted some where he can have his own family, I just love him so much and breaks my heart that he has no future there with no mate. It would’ve been very nice if Gentaro could’ve went to Toronto zoo to lead the troop over there. Charles, their beloved silverback passed away during the summer. I could’ve visited Gentaro since I live in Canada. But I think Toronto zoo has already a silverback in mine for their troop from the Granby zoo, which is in Quebec where I live. I guess Toronto zoo could’ve house Gentaro with their bachelor troop, but I guess it’s not always possible and it is totally understandable.

I am pleased to know that 'Toronto Zoo Canada' 'cannot' accomodate Gentaro..Gentaro may be physically ready in his 'Size' to be transferred but he's Not ready 'emotionally'...He has a strong 'Emotional-Bond' with his *family and home enviroment* later, when he's 14 and half years old. ' '18 months time'.

Japón sólo tiene 20 gorilas , y de los 5 silverback que hay , Taro de 52 años, monta 41 años que están solos y momotaro de 24, haoko de 31 y shabani 28 años son los que tienen descendencia, haoko y shabani son medio hermanos por lo tanto no se pueden mezclar. La solución no es enviar a gentaro al extranjero si no traer hembras . Genki tiene 38 años, momoko 42 años y ai 31 años. Gentaro la única opción que tiene es annie. Kiyomasa, kintaro y riki emigrar si no hay más hembras.

The St Louis Zoo near me just lost a 26 year old male. They now have a bachelor group consisting of a silverback that is 19 and 2 younger males that are 9 years old and 7 years old Would St Louis Zoo in St Louis Missouri, USA be a possibility. Maybe they could move their 19 year old with the females and put Gentaro in with the bachelor group.
This breaks my heart, but also angers me regarding the Kyoto Zoo. The moment Gentaro was born, they *knew* he'd have to leave some day. The zoo has had since *2011* to negotiate with other zoos, such as Toronto. I'm assuming Kintaro's future is just as uncertain, as well as Shabani's children at Higashiyama. Conservation is SO much more than simply creating more animals. It's _never_ been breeding for breeding's sake. Zoos that don't take a gorilla's _whole_ life into consideration are not good conservators. If the issue is due to the gorillas' owners, then KZ shouldn't create trade with them. On the opposite side of the spectrum is Prague who fully casterate some males before maturity, leaving them looking like slim females their whole lives. If they're doing this for birth control, why not just a vasectomy? After all, they're hominids like us. Or if it's to prevent aggression, that's also a poor excuse as bachelor groups do well, even at that very zoo!! Thank goodness there are many more zoos that put the physical AND psychological wellbeing of gorillas first. Hopefully two of them will be willing to bring Genki's sons into their folds.

It seems there’s a problem with zoos outside Japan accepting gorillas from their zoos; if so I don’t know why. Japanese zoos take very good care of their gorillas from what I can see, and they love them dearly. They just don’t have as much space as many other zoos do, but that’s because there’s less space for everything in Japan, it’s a small and very heavily populated country. Even if Gentaro’s too young to to be paired with females and become a troop’s silverback, there are many bachelor troops in zoos around the world that he could join. He may not get along peacefully with Momotaro indefinitely.

I am actually grateful for this kind of response. Because we do not get replies from many zoos. At the same time, it makes sense that the Toronto Zoo has learned of Gentaro's existence.

If any zoo is really interested in Gentaro being matched with one of their females, I would assume they would likely pay for the cost to have him shipped.

It’s tricky to introduce a new silverback into an already well established troop. Gorillas don’t like change, and just like humans they need time to grieve the loss of one of their own. They’re also very protective of their young. If Gentaro was introduced to the females at Toronto Zoo now, they’d probably make mincemeat of him. He’s got a long healthy life ahead of him and is still very happy where he is now; no need to rush anything.

Yes, it was very nice of them to reply. I hope Gentaro gets to meet a lovely lady too. I think he will be a great dad and husband. It’s just finding the right fit. I’m assuming they would want to be very sure before moving him abroad. There’s a lot of research that goes into finding potential mates. They still have not replaced Winston. Those ladies are without a SB right now.

Sadly, I knew in my heart this would probably be the outcome, due to my experience with these programs and in this field. It's my heart hope that one day, Gentle Gentaro will have the chance to become part of a breeding program because he is truly an asset to his species as a Western Lowland gorilla, and his gentle disposition would make him a great mate and father. On the other hand, a patient has to wait for one's turn , for example hospitalize to take a surgery.
Finally a new visitor to the kyoto city zoo called Gentaro another silverback after seeing Momotaro.
From behind , it is difficult to tell apart Momotaro and Gentaro.
@@Gorilla-Life Hi Ryan. I was born and raised in Vancouver, Canada but live in the USA now. Yes medical care is cheap, not quite free but very very low cost. You are right on the wait though. If its life threatening and you need emergency care you will get it immediately but if its something they dont deem emergency you have to wait in line. Socialized medicine is fine until you want something done fast. In the States I can get whatever I want as fast as I want but it cost $$$$$. Ive had Canadian friends come to the USA and pay for a procedure just to get it done quicker. For instance, a pain block. People with Lumbar Spine problems that need surgery get pain blocks until they can schedule you for surgery. It can take months and months to get in for a pain block. In the USA you can get in next week. If you want back surgery you can get in pretty fast, usually within 30 days in America but costs $$$$$. In Canada back surgery maybe takes a year or more but its almost free. Thats the main difference.

@@JohnBock-nq9lr I read an article, months ago, about difficulties with American and European zoos in cooperating with Japanese zoos, as far as agreeing transfer of Gorillas and other animals. Seems because of Japanese zoos difference in policy when it comes to care and habitat, American and European zoos are reluctant to any trade agreements as far as sending their animals to zoos in Japan which in turn cause Japan to agree to any transfer of their animals. When the zoo raises a gorilla family they need to take responsibility for placing the young silverbacks in a home somewhere else. This is on the zoo's that have these gorilla families. It's not right that no future planning is done. This should be a prerequisite for housing gorilla families, even a law.

@@tracey9116 hes not young. Hes a 13yo silverback who is so miserable bc hes with a family he doesnt want to be with anymore, and has no access to females. Hes essentially being tortured by denying him what his nature tells him he should have done years ago. You can see how frustrated and sad he is in every video. He is extremely unhappy, and he should be.
The zoo has said numerous times he needs to be moved. He and his father are going to kill each other. But its very difficult to find a suitable place.
Among many other things, they have to consider whether it fits into the family structure of the target troop. The character of females, for example, may not be compatible with a young and inexperienced male.
It's complicated 😓.
@@trenken he's still young by species programs standards, fully mature, but still young. You do realize many of our blackbacks/silverbacks are neutered, correct? It would be my fear that Gentaro would be moved then favoritism would cause the end of his lineage.

Gentaro needs a new home 🏡. He needs at least two female mates. What about Joann at San Diego Zoo? Winston recently died, leaving two older females, and two daughters. Joann is closer to Gentaro 's age and her younger sister too young to leave her mother. Anyway, why not consider a zoo outside Japan and one in America? After all, it is about Gentaro and his needs! 😊❤😊

@@ellenknell9645it's not as easy as some think. I worked in this system for 40+ years before retiring in 2023, but still network and am involved in conservation. Some of the people in our programs are cliquey placing their opinions before the need of the species. Gentaro is a prize as a Western Lowland, especially a captive one. I wish he could go to Prague because their success has been two births last year. That's just my opinion, though.
I agree, but conserving Carpenter Wada is more important. Without him, inflation will rise.

Gentaro will be fine. The zoos have a network with other zoos and sanctuaries. It takes time to match an animal that needs to be moved elsewhere. There's so much planning involved in executing the move as well. I'm looking forward to when this zoo makes the announcement of where Gentaro's new home will be.

Unfortunately, if Chiba Zoo owns him it’s up to that zoo to decide, unfortunately what we see in Japan is an unwillingness to get on board with the national programs, there seems to be real issues if zoos in other countries do not want to send gorillas to Japan. No disrespect GL but until Japan Zoos come together and put their animals needs first it’s unlikely Gentaro or any gorillas in Japan have a future.
They don't always accept outsiders. Some are very cliquey. Just keep the faith that something will happen.

You can also reach out to the Cincinnati Zoo, the Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago and Disney's Animal Kingdom in Orlando, FL.. They all have bachelor troops.
You have to think about Genki. Her depression if her son leaves. She already bit off her fingers years ago!! Figure out how to keep them together. Maybe separate them by mesh?

Oh that sucks. I was hoping Carpenter Wada would open his jumbo hot dog restaurant next to the Toronto Zoo. Btw if anyone goes to Kyoto, I highly recommend Wada’s Famous Jumbo Dogs - it’s located across the zoo, down the alley, next to the Kim-Il grocery store.
Japan has a gorilla exchange agreement with Europe. It is possible that Gentaro finds destiny in one of our singles groups. Maybe in Spain, something that would make me very happy because his grandmother Momoko traveled from here to Japan. Maybe Tenerife Loro Park...

Im sure Im not saying anything you dont already know but until that situation changes its going to be hard to find a foreign country who will welcome Gentaro. At the Toronto Zoo, keepers have been thinking about the future of the gorilla herd ever since Charles became elderly. Already, they have taken the next step. Therefore, Gentaro will not be involved with the gorillas in this zoo.
I am actually grateful for this kind of response. Because we do not get replies from many zoos. At the same time, it makes sense that the Toronto Zoo has learned of Gentaro's existence.
Canada is cold, though. That's where I come from. But, I'm sure that they would treat him well. He's such a handsome silverback and he was kind with Kintaro, I'm sure that he'll be a good father and leader.🦍

I pray Gentaro can be accepted some where he can have his own family, I just love him so much and breaks my heart that he has no future there with no mate. I feel all zoo's should prepare for Gorilla family expansion and why they don't. They owe it to these magnificent animals. Don't just put them on display and make money off them, Give them a future.

What are they going to do with Gentaro? Is it healthy for him to remain with his Father?

It would’ve been very nice if Gentaro could’ve went to Toronto zoo to lead the troop over there. Charles, their beloved silverback passed away during the summer. I could’ve visited Gentaro since I live in Canada. But I think Toronto zoo has already a silverback in mine for their troop from the Granby zoo, which is in Quebec where I live. I guess Toronto zoo could’ve house Gentaro with their bachelor troop, but I guess it’s not always possible and it is totally understandable.
Kintoro will miss playing with his big brother.
Que lastima, desde la muerte de Charlie a sus 50 años pense que Gentaro resultaba ser el sujeto ideal para ellos. Pero veo que esta tendencia conservacionista se ajusta mas por favorecer a los intereses burocraticos. Seguro que son muchas cosas por evaluar, desde la genetica de los sujetos, hasta su comportam8ento en general, los amantes de los gorilitas de la familia Momotaro debemos estar mas unidos para apoyar los nuevos proyectos de familia de nustros chicos Gentaro y Kintaro.

Lo que si está claro es que tarde o temprano Gentaro tendrá que irse porque de lo contrario puede tener muchos conflictos con su padre y eso los responsables del zoo lo deberían saber.
Gentaro no debería salir de Japón!! porque no sabemos como lo cuidarian en otros zoológicos, en otro país .

Japón sólo tiene 20 gorilas , y de los 5 silverback que hay , Taro de 52 años, monta 41 años que están solos y momotaro de 24, haoko de 31 y shabani 28 años son los que tienen descendencia, haoko y shabani son medio hermanos por lo tanto no se pueden mezclar. La solución no es enviar a gentaro al extranjero si no traer hembras . Genki tiene 38 años, momoko 42 años y ai 31 años. Gentaro la única opción que tiene es annie. Kiyomasa, kintaro y riki emigrar si no hay más hembras.

トロント動物園では、飼育員達はチャールズが高齢になった時から、ゴリラの群れの将来のことをずっと考えていた。すでに、次のステップへ進んでいる。ですから、この動物園にいるゴリラ達とゲンタロウが関わることはない。
こういった返答をしてくれるだけでも実はありがたい。なぜなら、多くの動物園からは返答を得られない。同時に、ゲンタロウの存在をトロント動物園は知ったことは意味がある。

The St Louis Zoo near me just lost a 26 year old male. They now have a bachelor group consisting of a silverback that is 19 and 2 younger males that are 9 years old and 7 years old Would St Louis Zoo in St Louis Missouri, USA be a possibility. Maybe they could move their 19 year old with the females and put Gentaro in with the bachelor group.
This breaks my heart, but also angers me regarding the Kyoto Zoo. The moment Gentaro was born, they *knew* he'd have to leave some day. The zoo has had since *2011* to negotiate with other zoos, such as Toronto. I'm assuming Kintaro's future is just as uncertain, as well as Shabani's children at Higashiyama.
Conservation is SO much more than simply creating more animals. It's _never_ been breeding for breeding's sake. Zoos that don't take a gorilla's _whole_ life into consideration are not good conservators. If the issue is due to the gorillas' owners, then KZ shouldn't create trade with them.
On the opposite side of the spectrum is Prague who fully casterate some males before maturity, leaving them looking like slim females their whole lives. If they're doing this for birth control, why not just a vasectomy? After all, they're hominids like us. Or if it's to prevent aggression, that's also a poor excuse as bachelor groups do well, even at that very zoo!!
Thank goodness there are many more zoos that put the physical AND psychological wellbeing of gorillas first. Hopefully two of them will be willing to bring Genki's sons into their folds.
So wonder why he was not taken . They have another one in mind ? I think he would have liked it there as he also relates well to humans too would have been a good move . Sorry to hear this .

It seems there’s a problem with zoos outside Japan accepting gorillas from their zoos; if so I don’t know why. Japanese zoos take very good care of their gorillas from what I can see, and they love them dearly. They just don’t have as much space as many other zoos do, but that’s because there’s less space for everything in Japan, it’s a small and very heavily populated country.
Even if Gentaro’s too young to to be paired with females and become a troop’s silverback, there are many bachelor troops in zoos around the world that he could join. He may not get along peacefully with Momotaro indefinitely.
