I'm planning on getting this -As my first!- keyboard. Since I'm not really familiar with keyboards, most of these complaints don't concern me. But I still found this video very helpful, thx, Gearfacts!
Your accent tells me your from down under, I am from Mumbai-India and I am glad you spoke so positively, It can certainly help improve. There's no point sitting quite about it, I am sure yamaha are listening, so have a good day mate......................
Hey Mel - thanks for that supportive message and yep, hopefully they are listening. I've had more design ideas since this video was posted so I might do an update very soon :)
Yamaha has done this on other series also. A pitch bend wheel and no mod?. I never use the pitch bend on these boards as I rarely EVER use the bend without the modulation. Tell a guitar player he can bend his strings, but not do a vibrato at the end or the bend. Yeah, good luck with that. Well, that is the choice we have been given. They do this with some of their even more expensive boards. What in the world are they thinking? Kills expression for guitar, flute, sax and other sounds where a bend and mod are performed frequently throughout so many songs. And not being able to see where the plug ins are, especially head phones? Otherwise, yeah, very nice board for it's intended use.
i bought this keyboard to supplement(not that it needs it) my korg pa 600. the screen shields needs to be removed allowing the lcd screen to be seen better . i think that they may add a larger screen later on future models . i might either send it back or (if i keep it) remove the shield myself and see what happens. considering everything , this keyboard is a very minor upgrade from the old ygp 235 series , but still fun to play around with.
Can you change the sound and settings quickly while playing? In some situations I will need it. On the S670 and the Tyros 5 Yamaha calls it "One Touch Setting".
So i just can quickly click them and the keyboard switches to the other voice and style i adjusted it to? I havn't seen people mentioning this is their reviews :)
Great vid, think you missed two points even: 1- The repeat function adds unvoluntairely 4 metronome beats in front of each loop. VERY disturbing this can not be switched off, the repeat function becomes useless in e.g. live jam sessions situation. You can turn down the metronom volume but that leaves you with an empty bar of music each loop :-((( 2- As soon as you start recording a track, the ACMP kicks in even if it was switched off!!! The only workaround I know is to displace the splitpoint to the lowest key, which then still can accidentally ruin your recording if you press the lowest key.... I disagree on you with the cables being out of sight at the back. This is a simple estatics issue and once you get to know your keyboard, you'll find them blind folded. But who changes so many times the connections it's a drawback? I find it particularly pleasent that I can't see the connections and all the cables in my setup.
All fair points. I like this keyboard and I hope Yamaha continues to develop the product. What I really want to see though is a 25 year-re-release of the mighty YAMAHA DJX. That would be awesome.
I have a 453 and have two more complains... FIRST: FUNCTIONS access is sequential (or demential)... And this kb has a LOT of them... Hard to go from one to another. SECOND: This KB has not a button for KEY SENSIBILITY (on/off) however a cheaper and earlier model like the PSR E423 has a TOUCH button. I really miss it in the 433 and 453. (I have the three models right now).
Hello thanks for your great vid. I need a keyboard for music lessons for my children. I am completely illiterate on music instruments. Music School recommended E443. Do you think it is a plus to get the E453 instead? Are these problems you highlighted the same in E443. Please advice.
Hi! I want to buy this keyboard, I have one question about the Live Control with the two knobs. When you adjust some parameters like cutoff and resonance, and then you go to the second line to adjust reverb and chorus, the cutoff and resonance changes you did remains? Or you lost these changes? I mean, you can adjust all the parameters at the same time (cutoff, resonance, reverb, chorus, attack, release, etc) or you only allow to adjust only two at the same time? Thank you!!
The cutoff and resonance settings do remain. The mode switching system for the control knobs is not great for live playing, though - I recommend you watch my video "PSR-E453, things I don't like about it". I have a love/hate relationship with this keyboard!
Gearfacts thank you for the feedback! I'm wondering buy this keyboard or the Casio WK 7200, so I watched a lot of videos about these keyboards, including your others videos too :) thank you again.
I was planning to buy a vintage synthesizer which is yamaha sy77. But I saw this e453. Can you give me some insights if i would stick on buying the vintage one or this new keyboard? Thank you
Hi Roval. I doubt I'd ever buy a vintage keyboard. The new keyboard provide 95% as good reproductions of those sounds, and they give you so many other features. Always remember that it's not just about the way an instrument sounds, you have to be able to have fun while using it :) Gearfacts
Hi, do you have an idea when their new models get released, is it usually a three ish year cycle? I only ask as I'm close to buying either the 453 or saving some more and getting the 670, but the last thing I'd want to see is a newer model release just after I buy :( Finally, can I just ask, do you know if the voices are a big improvement in the 670 from the 453, it certainly sounds like it on some of the youtube videos, but none the vids say that the 670 voice /tones are different.
Hmm, I sense that a replacement for the PSR-E453 may be coming quite soon. It's been about 2 years now. To answer your second question - No, I can't discern any better sounds on the 670 but it does have a much better range of rhythm styles. Hope that helps :) Gearfacts
Is the transparent shiny plastic covering the screen prone to scratches? Mine looks scratched already but yours looks as good as new. Secondly is the sound of the speakers loud enough...
Arun Mathew the screen seems to be pretty sturdy to me, I haven't found it especially prone to scratches. The speakers are noticeably louder than your average keyboard, but only when it's plugged in, not on batteries. Thanks for watching Gearfacts :)
Right, both E453 and EW400 lack the modulation wheel. Open a VST by U-he and you're puzzled how to use all those effects that literally every preset has. Cheaper and older Casios had both wheels and they were better made (this single wheel is a real cheapo). I simply cannot fathom this attitude. Even the cheapest MIDI and smallest keyboards nearly always have two wheels! An easy-to-access mod wheel is a must for all organ sounds, for a start. DSP Tremolo + Assign 6 helps get soomething out of it but it's not convenient and doesn't easily work for VSTs.The tiny screen is disappointing, too.
I wonder if it would be cheaper to add an expression pedal jack instead of a mod wheel? Sadly it's also possible that "we don't want to give that to you -- unless you spend another 300+ dollars -- so don't ask" :-( Do the patches (presets) on the PSR respond to any CC codes from external MIDI?
When I press the into button on my Yamaha Keyboard it changes rhythm from A to B and vise versa. How can I keep the same rhythm A while pressing intro?
This also doesn't have a TRUE 6 track sequencer like my Casio WK-1350. My Casio has 6 tracks that you can fill up yourself PLUS a guide track for the drums/style. YAMMIE gave up one of their 6 tracks to the drums, which leaves you with only 5 original tracks that you can fill up.
Can you kindly explain the reason(s)? From what I gather the YPG 235 is a portable grand with 76 keys instead of the E453's 61 keys. They both have the grand soft touch effect. And the YPG comes under/around $250. This made me quite curious.
Tarek Jayde Rahman The Yamaha YPG 235 has 32 notes of polyphony(you can play 32 notes at the same time). The PSR e453 has 48 notes of polyphony and many more sounds and styles. For 76 notes check out the Yamaha PSR EW400 or PSR EW300.
What i hate in this synth where are the DIN Midi Ports when you have old fabulous expenders to control only 1 USB sockets how to connect them does it exist Any adapter to to manage this problem
I totally agree, Phoenix. I love traditional MIDI DIN sockets. Some of us don't want to use computers for music, Yamaha! Sadly, there's no adapter to connect the USB socket to MIDI machines. Thanks for watching Gearfacts :)
Oh yeah? What do you call this? www.walmart.com/ip/AGPtek-USB-To-MIDI-Keyboard-Interface-Converter-Cable-Adapter-Support-Windows-Win-XP-Win-Vista-Mac-OS/49573230?wmlspartner=wmtlabs&adid=22222222222037119205&wmlspartner=wmtlabs&wl0=e&wl1=o&wl2=c&wl3=10360205960&wl4=kwd-1103080478576&wl12=49573230_10000001315&wl14=midi%20to%20usb%20adapter&veh=sem#read-more
I don't think that's what he means - He wants an adapter that will convert the USB socket *directly* to his other DIN socket midi gear. I do too! That one from walmart only connects midi keyboards to computers. Thank you for your comment though and thanks for watching Gearfacts :)
And WHAT exactly, is "DIN MIDI PORTS"? And to the rest of you, I am a BIG FAN of getting MORE for less, but in THIS case, the Yammie, is basically a fancy toy, but NOT in terms of sounds. For all of the OTHER refinements that you mention, I'm sorry, but you're going to have to start saving your money, to get MOST, but not ALL of the "features" that you are grumbling about. For FIVE YEARS, I did a lot of demos on a Casio CT-670, but I used a Tascam Portastudio 05 , Alesis MMT-8 and Alesis SR-16. All of the above, totaled about $1300 "back in the day". ( early 1990's) In the NOW, most of you are expecting "miracles" for a whole lot LESS than what they are worth! WRONG! If you WANT something bad enough, then you will PAY for it, but you don't have to pay "through the nose."
A good review has both pro's and cons. Great you give them both. And yes, some issues are 100% avoidable such as the location of the USB stick. Typical case of functionality loosing out against aesthetics
Yep, and there are some issues here that Yamaha has had for years and years, persistent even as aesthetics change. You have to wonder if they even conduct any kind of feedback engagement with owners. Same goes for Casio! Thanks for watching Gearfacts :)
I agree absolutely. This is a very obvious and very serious problem with PSR keyboards and as I think I said in the video, it amazes me that they haven't fixed it after so many years or releasing new models. Thanks for your comment, Diane, I hope the keyboard is doing good work for you in other respects. Gearfacts
And still no quantisation for built-in sequencer, no built-in loop editing/creation - all the features which are available in same price CASIO keyboards?
Yeah it's a fair point. I guess the Casio CTK6*** series lacks certain things that the PSR-E453 has, too. It all comes down to what the consumer needs most. It's a shame we can't have the best bits of both though, like in this design I created: ruclips.net/video/T1AxnEkDLoc/видео.html
Aside mechanics, which in keyboard are the keys, and can be easilly fixed, electronic either works or not. I have seen Yamaha keyboards from 80s that still work like new.
i know about your minor complaints but to a beginner those do not matter right i amuying this keyboard to use it on a pc to make electronic mysic so i should be cool right ow yeah and also to learn how to play the keyboard itself with acords and stuff
Oh it's a great keyboard, definitely. I've made a couple of other RUclips videos about all its good features. These few issues could so easily be fixed, and the purpose of this video was mainly to tell Yamaha what needs to be improved. Thanks for watching Gearfacts!
You mean MIDI over DIN5 in stead of USB. Well it's clear this keyboard is aiming at 'modern' people by only supporting USB (which works brilliant by the way, even in a two way setup (speakers of keyboard become output of computer).
I thought the polycarbonate plastic cover above the blue display could be opened , hinged up so it becomes a really cool sheet music stand! that would REALLY be a handy and useful gimmick... 1 you can see the blue display whenever you really need to to and 2, you have a cool and never to loose sheet music stand.. JUST DO IT ,YAMAHA !
Yep, they make great keyboards but their reluctance to innovate is frustrating. When I put my Yamaha Prototype video up on their Facebook page it was deleted immediately! Thanks for your comment and please mention Gearfacts to your friends :)
hi, thanks for your reply.I have a question: i just ordered the psr-453 online, and my inention is to use it while traveling, thus operated on battery power. I plan to recharge by 12v car supply, but am a bit reluctant to use and charge AA batteries and just read in the manual, the usb/ harddrive function wont work with batteries.( no secure power source) I am researching and concidering a more powerful 12v ledstrip powerbank ( to recharge by car also) , that way the keyboard thinks im using the wall adapter ( usb function) and less hardware to drag around in recharging.( also cost) any conciderations/ tips?thanks :)
Shabbir Jan I have lots of information for you. Start by searching for "Gearfacts 453" in RUclips and you will see all of my videos about the PSR-E453.
I don't understand Your dislikes of this keyboard. 453 is much cheaper than S670 so it's obvious that it can't have the same functions. If you need just buy 670 ;)
It's a brilliant keyboard that has just a few frustrating things things about it. If Yamaha removed these few frustrations, it'd be the greatest home keyboard ever ...is what I meant. I own this keyboard and love it :)
That's the problem with Yammie. They have flashes of brilliance but then forget about one or two details and wind up shooting themselves in the foot. Truth to tell though, if you want "big boy features" then you have to pay just a bit more, in order to get them. In the NOW, there are LOTS of terrific arranger workstations to choose from-all you have to do is compare the specs and listen to a lot of youtube videos, but, believe me, you'll be glad you did. Here's one of my recent favorites: www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/Pa600 Demo songs here: ruclips.net/video/whpdvgsmY58/видео.html
Yep, all of them. It's still a great board though, so don't be too put off. I uploaded a video about my suggested keyboard design to rectify all these problems, it's called "PSR-Infinity" :) Gearfacts
@@gearfacts 😂 🤣 Nevermind... He's frustrated because you've pointed out the deficiency of this instrument.. I assume with much enthusiasm he has one for himself and this bugger can't tolerate valid points.. 🤣 😂
He tells you at the beginning that he loves this keyboard and has recorded several "love videos." If you don't want to know what he'd like improved, simply don't watch this.
It's not intended to be a complaint, it's just a comment on what could be improved on this already excellent keyboard. This is the video where I talk about how great it is: ruclips.net/video/eyP-i8GU30A/видео.html
I've heard it's good to put a bit of melted ice-cream on a cloth and rub it into the scratches. Apparently the sugar crystals fill up the crack to some extent. But I've never tried it. Thanks for watching Gearfacts :)
I'm planning on getting this -As my first!- keyboard. Since I'm not really familiar with keyboards, most of these complaints don't concern me. But I still found this video very helpful, thx, Gearfacts!
The LCD will give you headache.. TRy that in shop before buying

Hey Mel - thanks for that supportive message and yep, hopefully they are listening. I've had more design ideas since this video was posted so I might do an update very soon :)
I guess some of these apply to the psr e463 as well. that being said the psr e463 and psr e453 really make up for what they laque
Thank You For Highlighting the Faults of it.

wrinkles124 Yep I agree with those statements. Great keyboard, many frustrating design problems!
Can you change the sound and settings quickly while playing? In some situations I will need it. On the S670 and the Tyros 5 Yamaha calls it "One Touch Setting".
Yes, there are 6 banks, each with 5 one-touch settings. Thanks for watching Gearfacts:)

Not sure - I doubt it.
I agree too 😁
On the screen, the BASS CLEFF should be on TOP of the treble clef. its personal.
Fair and true, friend.
I dont get it. Isnt the bass cleff a lower pitch than the treble cleff so it makes sense?
Yes to be honest I was a little bit confused as well. Marino?
Guitarplayers see their instrument upsidedown, I guess they read their sheet music also like this hahahaha
Is the transparent shiny plastic covering the screen prone to scratches? Mine looks scratched already but yours looks as good as new. Secondly is the sound of the speakers loud enough...

Sadly it's also possible that "we don't want to give that to you -- unless you spend another 300+ dollars -- so don't ask" :-(
Do the patches (presets) on the PSR respond to any CC codes from external MIDI?
Good point, definitely. Gearfacts
i dislike too bright screen.
Rest of buttons just lost of sight..yes higher end with lighted buttons.
Yamaha PSR-E453 vs roland xps10 what's the best ?

This also doesn't have a TRUE 6 track sequencer like my Casio WK-1350.

Tarek Jayde Rahman Yamaha PSR e453.

No, it has no vocal cancel function (that I know about) Gearfacts

Gus Marsan I'd go for the psr-e453
Gearfacts Thanks!! What is the difference between wk 6600 and psr 453? Thanks a lot!
Gus Marsan ah there are many differences. All the specs are on yamaha's page
Gearfacts Thanks, For u, The yamaha is better than wk 6600?
From the feature side, WK 6600 is better, from the quality of built-in sounds, yamaha is slightly better.
Put a matte screen guard for the display
Yep that'd definitely be worth doing /Gearfacts
It happens to me when I go to some other inputs
Hello! Does this keyboard has a sensitive touch in it?
Yes it sure does. Gearfacts
Can I use this one without any power source
Doi Lee yang You can use batteries or a power adapter. It's not as loud when you use batteries though
What kind of battery does this piano required?
Sorry keyboard
Realize the price!
i know about your minor complaints but to a beginner those do not matter right i amuying this keyboard to use it on a pc to make electronic mysic so i should be cool right ow yeah and also to learn how to play the keyboard itself with acords and stuff
Oh it's a great keyboard, definitely. I've made a couple of other RUclips videos about all its good features. These few issues could so easily be fixed, and the purpose of this video was mainly to tell Yamaha what needs to be improved. Thanks for watching Gearfacts!
is 453 or i455 is best one to buy
I haven't tried the i455 so i can't answer sorry
And it does not have a midi connection...isnt it an aditional limitation of thos keyboard??
fabiomand Good point. You have to rely on USB which is not to everyone's liking, me included.
You mean MIDI over DIN5 in stead of USB. Well it's clear this keyboard is aiming at 'modern' people by only supporting USB (which works brilliant by the way, even in a two way setup (speakers of keyboard become output of computer).
Does it have split feature ?
Yes. Thanks for watching Gearfacts :)
Gearfacts it has proper split or just for chords ?
Yeah proper split, no problem :)
Gearfacts thanx sir !!
It was low level keyboard. Is that any thing better in this price? answer!
You'd get better sounds out of a second-hand pro synth. That might cost about the same. Thanks for watching Gearfacts :)
It was mean in 1st hand.
I don't think there is anything better for the same price.
Synth or Workstation?
I am purchsing yamaha I 453 key board I am resident in karachi Pakistan Please guide me
Shabbir Jan I have lots of information for you.

Hi man,are these flaws present in EW400?it's a bummer if yes...
Yep, all of them. It's still a great board though, so don't be too put off. I uploaded a video about my suggested keyboard design to rectify all these problems, it's called "PSR-Infinity" :) Gearfacts
please how can i split psrE453
google 'psr-e453 pdf', you will see the manual and it will show you how
Find the central C, start your chainsaw and push it right in... :-))

@@gearfacts 😂 🤣 Nevermind... He's frustrated because you've pointed out the deficiency of this instrument.. I assume with much enthusiasm he has one for himself and this bugger can't tolerate valid points.. 🤣 😂

yamaha por gringo pra fazer review dos teclados por favor.
The LCD screen sucks
Agreed 100%. What were they thinking!?
I have it but I don't like it
It has some good features but it is certainly not perfect :) #gearfacts
Stop complaning I have this piano and I love it very much. Can you stop complaning on it?
I love it too. But there are design problems that Yamaha needs to know about so future models are even better.
He tells you at the beginning that he loves this keyboard and has recorded several "love videos." If you don't want to know what he'd like improved, simply don't watch this.
kevinb2014 Precisely. Thanks Kevin :)
En francais
Lol
Hope this price you are whining about nothing
I'm not whining, I made literally 7 other videos showcasing all its great features. There's always room for improvement in any product :)
bla bla bla bla bla
It's not intended to be a complaint, it's just a comment on what could be improved on this already excellent keyboard. This is the video where I talk about how great it is: ruclips.net/video/eyP-i8GU30A/видео.html
which is good yamaha psr ew400 or yamaha psr s 670??
I'd got for the ew400, personally. Thanks for watching Gearfacts :)

I've heard it's good to put a bit of melted ice-cream on a cloth and rub it into the scratches. Apparently the sugar crystals fill up the crack to some extent. But I've never tried it. Thanks for watching Gearfacts :)
