i like that you included great vocalists in the “bad/decent”categories to show that even legends can have off days. one performance doesn’t define a singer, which is something kpop stans desperately need to learn.
When people say that belting with good technique makes it boring I always think about Shinee's Jonghyun. He has one of the most stylized vocals I have ever heard and still manages to have a healthy and developed technique
Yes !: This ! He started by mastering the technics before stylising the way he used his voice. His solo discography is really something to listen to, he really did explore the limits of his voice a lot, he was a really ambitious vocalist who deeply loved music and seemed really curious about all he could do. But what is the most striking to me is really his evolution as a vocalist, he's so interesting, he did start as a more technical singer and slowly stylized the way he sang to a point he really became a K-pop vocalist you can't mix with any other
@user-wi5lf2xd2h Yesss! He knew how to do it and realized what worked and what didn't work, I forgot what vid it was but I remember him mentioning how he changes the way he sings often and I've heard vocal coaches say the same thing cuz the way he sings 1 song changed every year

This is why I always say there's a clear distinction between horrible and bad because none of the bad ones were really horrible and some of them weren't that bad to listen to (For the most part)
Nice now I have a better notion of what belting is. To distinguish the quality of the belting is like having a feeling about the "push". Push "painful" feeling : bad. Push "screamy" feeling : decent. Push "beautiful and lyrical" feeling : Great. Its quite like the voice you hear has a texture value. Spiky for Bad, Grainy for Decent and Soft for Great. And congrats for your finals !
I was a little bit confused when you showed Chen as red, because I thought it sounded good. But then you showed him again as green, and difference was crazy! Thanks for this video, and hope you did well on your finals, haha!
i love how you showed chen in both bad and good belting and with the same note. it shows that this is about technique and not just mindless stan culture who thinks their fave can do no wrong and calls out others needlessly.
I think people are losing perspective recently because we rarely hear idols sing live anymore. It used to be that we regularly heard incredible vocalists from SHINee, snsd, etc, crack or get into trouble on music shows, so people understood that this is normal. Honestly it made the great performances much more thrilling, because you could understand how difficult and rare it is. Now that everything is pre-recorded and heavily processed, I don't even know what half these fourth gen idols really sound like. Choreo has gotten tougher, but I'd personally prefer we went back to the old ways. Just let the main vocalist stand still and sing while the others dance at the climax.
belle has such an amazing voice, but i noticed that she usually has to push herself to hit those crazy notes which makes me worried. i hope she protects her voice so that it doesn’t deteriorate :(
i’m really glad you specified this isn’t about good singers vs bad singers and even showed great singers having bad moments! a lot of fans don’t seem to understand that even great vocalists can have their off days, especially in such a gruelling industry.
Chen's best luck notes are one of my favourites. This video made me realise that how even good vocalist can do bad belting sometimes.(Also can someone tell me that what range is chen's drop that note is?)
In Drop That, he sustains an E5 belt at the end although there's a quick-phrased G5 right before. But lmao his part in Drop That has so many belted E5's.
I'm seeing a bunch of comments annoyed that there's only idols in this video . Why? This is an educational video about vocal technique and it shouldn't matter who is used as an example. Also maybe the creator has been listening to Kpop more as if recent and at the end of the day this us his channel

belting refers to the thickening of the folds that can not apply above M1 or MX1, so you are right and wrong... MX2 cannot be belted, MX1 could be called "mix belt" because it refers to the "thinner" or thinned version of chest voice

problem with technical vocal analysis is kpop fans in particular assume that's all there is to performing, when in reality technical skills in an art from is only a means to an end but not the end itself. a lot of kpop's best technical vocalist cannot stick to the melody written for them without going off the rails in vocal runs, or cannot emote according to the intended mood of the song. vocal delivery alone cannot save a song from being terrible, and always the best vocalists get the worst music out there (case study: csjh lol) because great technique isn't needed in a genre whose main intent is to deliver a cohesive musical idea in 3 minutes. expecting eurocentric music theatre/opera vocal delivery in pop music fundamentally misses the point of pop music and breeds cognitive dissonance. If you appreciated vocal technique as much as you do, you'd be analyzing opera and other genres whose intent IS technique, instead of pop music centred on cute idols and catchy corporate-friendly music.
but shouldn’t it be full chest in a certain range that allows the voice to be loud and punchy in order for it to be considered a belt? i mean i also call mix in this range belts but i always thought it was informal/not so correct.
Super Junior's Leeteuk is mixed as a singer, sometimes he's great and sometimes he's meh, but he actually has one of the best belting techniques around.
