RIP Shane. Your heart of gold spilled in unmatched song and will continue to cover us in the warmth of the grandest spring afternoon until we join you in that great eternal dance.
Sometimes people ask me why I love my sweet Erin so much... they think it's for her landscapes... no, it's not... in so many countries and mine, a drunken man enters a pub, starts singing a ballad, and the people around will shout on him to tell him to shut up and leave... in my emerald island, people ask the crowd to shut up and listen, then the crowd start singin' with him... that's all the difference... Ireland 'not a country... it's an everlasting burning soul !
It is, that difference, I agree. Yet there is so much more. A single man's intellect in solitude with drinks thought illuminates masses . If only we had time to think without drink .🍀our history is older than the world at large knows , our resource , its people world wide known.Emeralds last forever.
Erin?? That's a soup brand for feck sake ya Gobshite 🤦 Sadly a lot of those that left Ireland chose to forget what it meant to be Irish or as was the case, they never knew as the real Irish are still here.
+Zach Martin As much as I like the guy, and as talented as he is, this is exactly the same as you see and hear in any small british pub late at night; an extremely drunk fool singing badly
Shane single-handedly revived Irish music from the dead. Bands like Flogging Molly and Dropkick Murphys simply would exist if it wasn't for the Pogues.
There's beauty in the darkness. There is a beauty in the drunken slime....it is a REAL gift to feel these songs in their immediate moments and Shane is FINE, he's OK!! A million times better then a lot of you'll ever see!!! The music is ALL!!
Since 1985 at Battersea Park free gig, my first time. Ive seen the pogues wi Joe Strummer. Last gig, Thetford Forest,2014. Liverpool Feis also , the last time
@@ElvarMasson He really could, granted his ability decreased since the early 90s but listen to a Pair of Brown Eyes or his rendition of Nick Cave's Lucy and he kills them
When it comes to lyrics he's an absolute genius ... and when he sings it he keeps the passion and knowledge of the song. Id sooner listen to his 'imperfect' drunk tones ... than lose the passion in his words to some pre pubescent pop star .... or a same old same old ... aged singer. Neil Diamond for instance great songs great voice but not unique people like george harrison sound exactly the same. No one like shane out there in the world.
Writing & singing even the one song, " A pair of brown eyes", secures his place in music history. If you listen to it...timeless. Yes, he has feet of clay & a body which will turn to dust! Any immortals out there want to keep throwing stones at his glass house?
Same here I listen to Shane any time that Dark cloud descends. His songs are pure Gold to me. Like today just one of them days. Walking down the River Liffey I put on If i should fall from grace of god and so many more. Instantly the black clouds disappear. Not in are lifetime will see another Shane. His songs always take me to better places.👏💯🙏
His voice is stirring. I've been known to listen to the three albums I have (red roses, grace and rum) back to back on repeat. Driving music, snarling lyrics. Wonderful. Now he's no singer in the usual "tuneful, high quality voice" use of it - but when it comes to raw grit, fire, passion and all the rest of it - that man has it in bucketfuls! :D
Im irish, and its just what ya do after a few pints someone starts singin you shut up and give respect to the person singin and the people who want to hear it until you've been and seen the atmosphere an Irish song creates in a situation like that no matter how drunk the man is once he can remember the words and hold a note it brightens up the place and its just what us irish like to do, bring a bita trad to a glum situation and when its shane macgowen you want to hear it!
I don't know what it is about Shane that gets to me, what it is that reaches my very soul. He's a complete state, a shambles, he can't sing very well, but when he does, my eyes fill up, for there is a beauty somewhere in the cacophony of sound that issues forth. Someone else on here said that, "When he sings, the angels listen" and I don't think that's far off the mark. Long live his work, long live Shane Macgowan, a true legend in his own lifetime, a singing enigma wrapped up in a conundrum.
Track 13, last track called "Kitty". Shane nor anyone in the Pogues wrote that song however. You can find it by simply RUclipsing "Kitty - the Pogues".
Soooo cool to watch this video again!! I watched it on tv in the UK a few years ago before i moved back to Sweden. The woman with the dark hair and red top sitting beside him in the pub is a friend of mine that used to live in Nenagh. I went to visit her just after this was filmed and saw some photos of Shane etc that she had taken. Brings back awesome memories:). Btw, it's not Shane's Mrs..
Shout Out From New Zealand 🇳🇿,,,"THAT WAS BEAUTIFUL" !!!!!,,,2021,,Thursday,,march,,25th,,11:49pm,,,I Could Cry,,,Pure Raw Gold💚💎💚,,,The Pogue's🤍😷...Lovely.......
As usual, excellent. He just conjures up magic every time he gives us a song. Met the man a good few times, no bullshit about him. One of the most genuine sons of Éire you could ever have the pleasure of meeting. PS: Lord have mercy on his late mother Therese MacGowan... She was a huge influence musically in her son...
Back in the early 90's I worked a gig at Ally pally in London, it was a Morrisey show and Kirsty MacColl was the support. Shane was invited to join her and do "Fairytale of New York". It was epic! He got lost backstage and nobody could find him and he was (of course) three sheets to the wind. I placed an extra mic on a straight stand on the stage which Shane stumbled up to and leant on and being a pump-action stand it promptly collapsed on him! Kirsty gave him a hand to get it at the right height and the song continued on its way. Meanwhile someone on the PA crew (I think he was American and wasn't familiar with the wonder that is a pissed Shane MacGowan) caused a bit of a kerfuffle side of stage and yelled.."Get security there's a fucking drunk maniac on stage"...and got really shirty. Took a few of us to explain Shane to him, lol!
...one of the...remember J.S.Bach wrote Songs as well...Brahms, Lennon/McCartney, Hank Williams, Bob Dylan, Frank Black, Greg Saige, Chris Bailey, R. Davis, Bowie, Gordon Gang ...with all those mentioned he shares being the Top3. /...) As a Singer as well... wish I could find the one Version again him singing The parting glass, hardly remembering the lyrics, but with a true heart. Are there people who sing “better”...? probably... but more sincere? probably not.
The Pogues, as good as they were musically, would have been nothing without Shane. He was the perfect bloke in the perfect place at the perfect time. A whole new generation heard that music and loved it, and Shane was what made us listen. Post-punk angry youth finding expression in Irish folk music, who'd have thought that would happen?
I just started learning about him. I love listening and learning from different cultures. I hope Shane is doing good. I will keep learning. Always try to have and open heart and mind.
I remember this programme. There was a point where Shane was stumbling around in a corridor (inevitably under the influence of pints of Cinzano) with a mate and slurred..."Where's the fokking pub" and stumbled through the door into the ladies toilet. Legend!
I feel like I love his music and they way he puts lyrics together. Feel really bad he drank his life away they way he did. That's what he wanted to stand for, freedom. A drink and a smoke what ever you want. He had an old school attitude like nothing else.
Saw him live in 2012 with the rest of the Pogues. He looked really well then. He slurred a lot while just taking. Spider translated for him to the members of the audience who couldn’t get what he was saying. I remember he said “so where’s you rather be? Here or watching Metallica?”
He is one lucky bloke to still be alive after all these years of hard drinking. I mean majority of people who get bladdered everyday for a great number of years dont make it pass 50, due to liver and kidney diseases and in some cases organ failure. I knew a man who used to live down the road from me and as soon as he would get up in the morning he would drink a bottle of wiskey and then head down to the local for a few jars afterwards. He died aged 45 after drinking hard for so long..
Some people are just gifted, regardless of their personal issues. Long may you live to bless our ears with real song Shane. It's a refreshing change from all the manufactured, auto-tuned trash we are all told is music. THIS IS TALENT, THIS IS MUSIC, THIS IS WHAT THE PEOPLE WANT. Stick that in your pipe and smoke it Simon Cowell.
mc'gowan is IRISH , he has NEVER EVER ...... EVER .... Called or professed himself an english man ...... and is PROUD of his irish heritage , AND WE ARE PROUD OF HIM!!!
The man was an amazing drunkard, though, I would never use this as a standard to follow... but considering his inebriation at this stage, he performed this song exceptionally well. And with love, and character too. Without backing music...
He never hurt no one but himself, and brought nice music with sould. Nice soul
RIP Shane. Your heart of gold spilled in unmatched song and will continue to cover us in the warmth of the grandest spring afternoon until we join you in that great eternal dance.
Beautiful words, "thee eternal dance"
What a nice touch, having his Mum singing it too, brings a tear to the eye
100 percent genuine gentleman drove him around London many times lovely bloke .
Does he still go to the Boogaloo bar?
Arfabiscuit your an ass hat, bloke(;
u can exactly feel in his voice how much this song means to him . he's truly a unique singer . amazing .
this kinda of songs never die .
He was a gift to the world.
he's out lived what people have thought. .live forever shane
Live a long time in our hearts

Exactly 💖
Shane's mama loves him and that is all that matters .. after hearing his mama , no wonder Shane's soul is deep and wonderful ...
He delivers music from his soul. Alcohol can't invade the soul of Shane.

+w0bbl3r Polite request: can you please try to be more of a passive aggressive inflammatory troll.
Much appreciated.
he´s not a simple drunk men , hes the former singer of the pogues so shut the fuck up.
If you think Shane is foolish..why are your here..maybe im the fool..from where im sitting i see genius...Peace! and Love!
he is a raving piss head but ask anyone world wide who the voice of irish music is if it aint ronie its shane...aint forgot luke either ....
RIP big man. Such a heart.
absolutely lovely. i would have killed to been in that pub at that moment!
Shane single-handedly revived Irish music from the dead. Bands like Flogging Molly and Dropkick Murphys simply would exist if it wasn't for the Pogues.
Shane McGowan the Patron Saint of Fuckups, peace and long life to you brother.
Nicely done, Shane-o. Even in a pub you can bring the house down. The only problem is every time I see this clip I'm reduced to tears.

Shane carries the irish words, music, poetry, like a torch, His poetry and songs will inspire future irish generations.
He’s English
What an alcoholic he was!
Love Shane love and respect from South Wales 🏴🇮🇪 😄
i dont care what anyone says that guy can write a song never mind sing one
He can write a song, or at least have an idea how he wants his song to sound, but, as you can hear (?), he obviously can't sing

A unique character
the ballad is "kitty"
he sung it in the 1984 album "red roses for me"
A warrior poet: Eternally fighting himself, and losing every time. Poor, hapless bloke. Thanks for the music.
Good man! Saw him in Shinrone, Co.Tipp 20 years ago. That concert blew me away.
He´s singing through his nose...what a great character, a living legend!
