Not ALL watch collectors look for 39mm to 40mm. I am a serious collector and there is nothing in my collection under 42mm. Put a dive bezel or similar on it and 44mm is the starting point. I have 7.5" wrists and I am well north of 6' and can find my way around a weight stack at the gym. For me, anything smaller than the aforementioned measurements makes it look as if I've mugged a child for their watch. It always puzzles me that the comment sections on every video featuring a larger watch is full of opinions on the "wrong sizing". As if the watch manufacturer had relations with the proverbial canine. There are many watches that I would love to own, but they fall short of the above referenced sizing. I accept the fact that some watches are larger, and some smaller. In fact, I would say I'm grateful for it, lest more of my net worth find its way into time pieces.
Lol! Your one imperfection is what makes this watch absolutely perfect! The date and crown at the same angle is genius! Totally MAKES the dial! That looks like the same awesome deep blue as the dial on my Spring Drive Diver's 200m SE. Very cool!
I have this watch and the same sized wrist. Even though the case is 44mm, this is mainly due to the large bezel. The dial itself is relatively compact and the overall look is very balanced. For a large watch it actually wears extremely well - even on smaller wrists and tends to make a smaller wrist look larger! It looks good on your wrist. My only two gripes with this watch are the weight (it's a beast) and the GMT hand which is easily mistaken for the minute hand when quickly glancing at the watch. I wish they did the GMT hand a more different colour to make it easier to differentiate at a quick glance. Apart from that, it is a fantastic watch. Enjoy it.
Tried one of these on last week, stunning watch. As someone with 8 inch wrists the size is perfect. I’m not a fan of crowns or date windows at 4 o clock, but for this watch I’d make an exception. My absolute grail travel watch is the JLC master geographic. This is probably second.
Agree, not everyone wants that big of a watch nor doesn’t fit a majority of normal people wrists. Why don’t they get that? One of the reason Rolex is so popular because they make watches that fit everyone,,,39-40mm is perfect. I love Blancpain but their dive watches are 44mm. I have a good size wrist but that’s just to big to wear comfortably.
I could imagine that they try to focus on their domestic market, given that they do not produce that many watches to begin with. There seems to be no immediate need to improve in those areas - or the watches seem to sell at a rate that they are comfortable with so they might not need to adjust things short term. However I do agree, the clasps are not bad but if I have to be brutally honest, it is just your average / basic two trigger clasp - produced at a very high standard. That does not make it bad but one could expect more.
GS is making a remarkably great effort to position, recognition-wise, at the same image level of the swiss competitors. And to be honest, probably is achieving it. At least from my point of view.👌🏻
This watch is absolutely stunning! I love the color combo, the sapphire bezel, and the metal finishing. I believe your points were subjective and relative…but I understand. No watch is perfect…but this one comes pretty close! The date window and crown line up at 4 o’clock, and it blends in with the watch so I don’t consider it a problem. Very well executed video.
Love this piece! 44mm is perfect size for me. Few things missing from this review...1. The PRICE! 2. Where is the Lume Shot? (Is the Bezel Fully Lumed?) 3. Depth of Water Proofing? I would rather have this than a Rolex any day! 40mm Rolex way too small for me also way too expensive.
One person’s disadvantage is another’s advantage. I love the size on my larger wrist. I don’t normally like 4 o’clock date windows, but the execution here is 👌 Need to work this watch into my collection!
Or you can get the SBGJ239 (the version on the strap with a green dial). I had no trouble finding 21mm straps in rubber, fabric and water proof ammo pouch leather that all have quick release spring bars (the GS strap doesn’t have quick release spring bars). I also found an angus jubilee bracelet (Watch gecko) in 21 mm that fits the watch fine. Sometimes having a large watch on a strap helps make it easier to wear. The green dial is also a little rarer than the blue dial since only GS Salons and boutiques get the green dial.
I have the 239 with OEM Alligator strap and OEM bracelet ( but I actually prefer it on the strap) I love this color way and find the 237 a bit sterile. It's one of my favorite watches ever.
I hear a lot of reviewers often stating that the date wheel must to match the dial. I think this is true only if the date is not replacing a marker (like the 4:30 position). In the case of this watch, I think they made the right choice. If they color matched the date wheel, it would look like a smile with a missing tooth.
The GS stands for its own, this is just a really beauty and well made. Would look great aside my gmt but as well stands on its own design vise. Great review as usual bro 🙏🏻🙏🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Fantastic video! You did a great job showcasing this beautiful watch. I would love for you to do a video on the new Grand Seiko green sports GMT, SBGE295 which is my favorite release of the year.
I love the watch and have 8.5" wrists and even I felt it was too big when I tried it on... also oe reason why I ended up buying a GMT Master 2. Cheers and great video.
Wise choice. My wrist is close in size, and my sweet spot is 40-42mm. I recently picked up a Seiko Flightmaster for $247, great watch. Perfect with a NDC strap.
I don't mind a date at 4, but I get why people dislike it. I really can't get over the 44mm, though. Almost all of my watches are 38-41mm and 44mm just feels enormous to me, especially with that lug to lug distance and thickness. Grand Seiko really specializes in making great watches marred by 1 or 2 obnoxious things (usually a power reserve).
🤔 If you really want a GMT Master II, this watch will not calm your desire...however, it is an absolutely gorgeous watch and can coexist with a Rolex in any collection.
Oh the steinhart ocean 2 have the same kind of look with some differences the date is at 6 and black window on the premium version, it's not a gmt and it's not half white and black but more like a diver an unidirectionnal bezel with a quarter black or white, it depends on the white or the black version, the bezel grip is a bit more "aggresive" on the steinhart, really like this GS and the Steinhart. Maybe the Steinhart is a bit smaller and thinner than this GS.
I would remove the inner steel ring as it makes the bezel look to thick and the face small and out of proportion. I agree that the 4 o’clock position is not necessarily my first choice of position. Size wise I’m happy with it as I have a 7.5” wrist!
limited to people with large wrists. Don't quite understand why GS do this. The good thing about 40 or 41mm watches is that they work on more variety of wrist sizes including larger wrists.
@Kit Johnson I'm not sure why they didn't just make it smaller and keep the crown at 3. IMO, that would have been the better move, but maybe large watches with crowns at 4 are popular in the Japanese market.
@@basicdose.9872 Good point. Seiko's obsession with the crown at 4 reminds me of Orient's obsession with putting "Water Resist" on the face of their dress watches.
Its an awesome watch.the main thing that detracts from this watch is the bracelet ...that thin centre line running down the side of each centre lug is tacky and over busy...
The thing with bigger watches is that they are great if they are sports watches. They need to get more visible when you are in the action, like diving, driving, flying an airplane. There is nothing wrong with wearing a larger watch if it is intended for that purpose. Daily wear watches for elegance and function should be slim, simple, and precise. The problem with modern watches is that they want to hit the sports watch category, yet the product by itself isn't. They just keep making them bigger and bigger and forget that there are those who have smaller wrist who also want to enjoy the product. A lug to lug of over 47 IMHO is just too big. Size over 42mm for a sports watch is enormous and serves no purpose unless you are flying some jetplane.
All GS has to do is make this watch no larger than 41mm, a lug-to-lug of no larger than 48mm, transparent case-back, and adjustable tapered bracelet. Once done, GS will make this watch much more desirable to the watch community.
I absolutely don't agree! I am so tired of people trying to shrink watches down to women's sizes. I like my watch to be 44-46mm it is a perfect size for men's watches, that's when it feels like a good comfortable size. 42 is the smallest I ever want to see a watch.
I like the watch as well……but you’re right…..44mm is too big….they could have made it 40.5mm like the sbgm 245 or 247….that’s a shame as I would have bought this instead of the 245 previously mentioned.
This is a very familiar theme amongst watch enthusiasts. Seiko and their monstrously oversized watches are their own worst enemy. Release this same watch in a 40-42mm diameter with a 47-48mm lug to lug and see the potential Rolex GMT buyers line up. Till then I will stick with the Rolex GMT and Subs all day despite the crap that goes along with buying Rolex SS Sports. It’s so obvious. Anytime a watch company releases a smaller version of a popular model it sells like gang busters. Think about the Tudor BB58 or the recent smaller Seiko divers. The big 9” wrist watch crowd is loud and vocal but the reality is most watch enthusiasts don’t want a 45mm tuna can size watch on their wrist. At the very least offer both sizes.
NIce but regardless of wrist size , i think it's too big . I agree with you ; Make it 39/40mm ..Perfecto!! By the way . The GMT will , in 10 years time , have value .Sadly , the Seiko , as much as i like it .Won't . THAT alone is enough to sway the argument to Rolex .
I genuinely don't get watch sizing like this, not to make ethnic generalisations but apparently the Asian Market still think bigger is better and that's why GS still make oversized watches, which I find doubly strange because apart from the odd Sumo Star surely the Asian Market generally are quite svelte in size of wrist. If someone can prove to me that a watch that looks oversized on most wrists is a good business strategy then fair play, to me it just strikes tone deaf of what the market actually wants.
