I just love watching the genius Jean Renoir talk about his films. We're very lucky that he filmed these introductions to La Grande Illusion and Le Regle du Jeu. Wonderful. :)

Renoir made two films - La Grande Illusion and La Regle du jeu - that stand atop the moviemaking summit. Had he only made these two films, that would be enough to qualify him as a genius of the movie world. They are his "Crime and Punishment" and "The Brothers Karamazov" -- his "Hamlet" and "Othello."

    Jean Gabin Pierre Freynet

Greatest film ever made. Orson Welles said if he could save only one film, it would have been Grand Illusion.

Yeah the closed captioning doesn't work very well, his accent is too thick. He was speaking English. Basically he said that the movie is inspired by the story of a good friend of his who was shot down 7 times by the Germans and escaped being captured 7 times.
He says the war of 1914 was a war of gentlemen. And that is is our social obligation to understand the events of the World Wars so that they never happen again. He then went on to share some photos of his while he was in the war.

I think Jean Renoir was a Professor of Art(s) at Berkeley in California.
