Old gen MEMU trains chal sakte hain akele. They are basically Bo Bo locomotives of low power rating. They are operated in revenue service as Multiple Units, and trailer coaches are just an interface for these coaches to run in multiple, like twin or triple locomotive. Old gen MEMU motorcoaches generate upto 1000-1500 HP. Nowadays all type of EMU and MEMU uses 1600 HP motorcoaches. Vande bharat and vande metro are different as the motorcoach depends on the trailer coaches for some reason or the other. For eg, the end units of a VB are formed as - DTC + MC + TC + MC, where the TC carries the pantograph, and the other coaches have the traction transformer for supplying the motor coaches. The MC can be identified by the side mounted air vents below the window at each end of the coach. That is why they are also required to be semi permanently coupled using a Shaku coupler or any one of its variants. I have seen even suburban train motorcoaches used by Railways for inspection and also to punish ticketless people and carry ticket checkers around.
