She was brought up as a valued member of the household, was #2 in her class in our large HS, went on to slay it in college and life with her parents behind her the whole way. There should have been no recourse for ex-BF’s parents to try to take custody of the child unless there was evidence of child abuse by the mother, and even THEN they should have been far from the first choice. 3rd story: Was expecting OP's parents to side with their niece but instead sided with OP. Honestly, good on them for siding with their own kid rather than someone else's. I understand that the ex had a traumatic event that almost led to suicide but that doesn't excuse that she irrationally blamed op for what happened, that op was an "accompice" and only dropped the charges against op when realizing op wasn't because she was also pressing charges against her family. It's possible it was Canada. Canada has Romeo and Juliet laws where a 17yo and 14yo can be together legally.
In case it’s in the US isn’t the age of consent in most states 18. So a 17 year old with a 14 year old is still seen as two minors together
