Came for the quality gaming supplies, stayed for the receding hair lines.
Doug's emphasis on the quality of the zipper made me happy. No cheep plastic zippers please!
Oh yes! I've had a bunch of covered cushions like that and the zippers are _always_ the failure point. Need a super solid zipper and a super solid attachment of the zipper track to the cover (that always splits).
Y2k zippers or bust
Doug insisting on premium zippers was so sexy ❤
omg Ed Saying "No, If your going to get a little dog, you might as well get a Cat", is giving off some serious Ron Swanson Vibes.....
As soon as I saw that 'rig' setup, my immediate thought was this as a hobby/gardening desk for my wife's plants. Make those frames strong enough for some hanging baskets.
I'd add to this the potential ability to hook on or attach a shelf. Clear off your desk space of things like candles , plants, lights OR use it for decoration stuff like funko pops. Personally i would love a shelf where the front is flush with my monitor faces, that i could place my speakers up there, a couple plants, and some lighting.
I'd say it sounds crazy to have such an expensive desk, but I went to a garden centre a while ago and they'd gone from garden sheds for about £5,000 to double glazed, insulated home office or actual garden shed, with double glazed doors, and power and insulation for £15,000. Gardeners spend a fair bit on their hobby... :D A potting desk/bench would be an interesting idea. Actually - being able to configure it as a woodworking/crafting bench with cheaper wood and special features would be incredibly smart of them. They should be thinking about miniature painters, train set people, artists, streamers, the Raspberry Pi/home electronics crowd, and obviously home office stuff.
Petition for a wyrmwood pool table with table toppers!
Good in theory, but with toppers, if something fails and food/water gets to the play surface below, that becomes a problem. I haven't had food/water make it to my play surface yet, but I feel like this would be a bigger issue for a pool table where the felt needs to be very secured to the surface below and the table would need leveling feet.
@@JTKmixgood point 😢
@@JTKmix For me, I wouldn't want the toppers necessarily for eating on, but to have as a second play space. If the toppers would be reversible with a mat on one side like the inside of the Prophecy that'd be dope.
Also, if having the table as a dining table is a must due to space limitations; a bendy plastic plate, like the acrylic inlay/overlay thing they've talked about (don't know if it's actually produced) could act as a secondary protection. Either laid directly on the play surface or if it's a bit larger, wedged between the toppers and the armrests.
Food for thought, imho
None of the proposed desk changes fix any of the problems with the desk that people actually want. For example: Increasing the space between the XL cubbies so you can fit in a chair comfortably. Or allowing people the option to delete the French Curve in the sitting area and have a straight edge if they wanted.
I’ll see what I can do
@@CRAZY-ED legend.
Large desk with two drawers leaves too little area for a chair. The exact reason I would currently never get one
Lift top coffee tables I've owned in the past had hydraulic mechanisms that operated the open and soft close. The hydraulics help both lifting smoothly and closing softly.
Don't think we didn't clock that transition at 9:37. So smooth.
1. As someone who is still waiting two years later for his Modular Desk, excited to see more Modular Desk content. But I do now understand those MGT 1.0 people who were getting antsy when you guys relaunched MGT 2.0 even though you hadn't delivered all the 1.0 tables ;)
2. You should absolutely just sell the cushion on its own.
3. Would love for you to bring back the mount-mount. I really want to get some clamp-style speaker stands so I can get my speakers over my monitors to improve my sound stage, but I'm not sure how that's going to work whenever I do get my desk.
4. Re: L-desk. Pleeeease do. Would LOVE an a-symmetrical desk, AND if the "L" part could actually be added to a MD 1.0.
5. Re: Keyboard drawer: Consider making it so that cubbies could mount to the underside of the tray so that those of us who ordered the MD 1.0 could order the tray, then re-mount our existing cubbies/drwaers to it.
I'm also waiting on my modular desk.
I really wanted to see the mount-mount as well, but more for my table than desk. I was wondering how well it would work for a streaming setup around live plays at my table, that I could then easily tear down or modify. (clamp a light or camera to the mount mount, and then be able to move it around the table or remove as needed)
That being said, I really like that tablet rig Doug Showed. That could be very useful in war gaming and the like.
I too, am waiting
Holy crap it has been two years!?
@@fishhead1982 I think year and a half since kickstarter/actual payment. It was in June/July timeframe last year that payment for it went through. But they have been talking about it for longer.
Dear god you have patience. I haven't watched this channel since then and it feels like a lifetime ago and you still don't have your desk. This company is trash.
Finally was able to scan Ed's QR code at 17:29. Right back at you Ed! :^D
Thanx
I tried the entire damn episode Ed!
XL desk early adopter here - have some thoughts if you want them.
The biggest issue I have with the XL is cubby spacing. I needed an XL work surface but I needed space for my office chair (Herman Miller Aeron), so I was forced into the single cubbies, which are actually too far apart. It's not a disaster but it's not great. I'm sad I don't get the utility of double cubbies or more accessible cubbies. I have to really reach or slide my chair to access them easily.
Second issue is mounting. Cutting the Mount Mount was a mistake. Off the shelf mounts *work* but not *well* - the magnetic rail just does not provide the right surface for a clamp. I don't really like the rig system idea, but I do think you need a better mounting solution - either a better lip in the back for clamps, or bringing back something like the Mount Mount that works with the rail instead of fighting it.
I really would like an L desk and will have FOMO if you launch one ;) I would've bought one! I'm into the idea of a hidden extensible laptop tray as well, I'd use that.
I like the keyboard idea (I have a digital piano *behind* me at the moment), but worry you'd be sacrificing too much leg room.
Really hoping you will have a story for early adopters on any cubby additions/changes - I know I'm sort of stuck with the mounting positions you installed on the bottom, but man I'm going to be grumpy if the Desk V2 is my dream desk after I already bought this one! I'm already kind of regretting buying before you made Signature Series a thing.
On drawer pulls vs push-to-open - pulls for me, every day. Way more ergonomic, and I think the pulls you chose for the desk are gorgeous.
Glad to see both of these projects getting some love though, they're solid ideas and I love growing my collection of matched hardwood furniture. Really appreciate your attention to detail on the dog bed cushions, that stuff matters.
Would buy a whole set of the tablet holders for my MGT since we use tablets running D&D Beyond.
That was almost the only idea that had me interested today
Imho, plan B should be following Allplay (or Cloud Puncher Games (Metallic solution)) into the Kallax competiton for board game storage. With exotic wood options of course. You might even solve for storage solutions that can free stand in the middle of a room with reduced tip over risk(they don't require being anchored to a wall).
Yeah, I've been eyeing that storage solution. It is pretty nice, and very modular. If I didn't already have a ton of Kallax type storage already I'd definitely be going for the Allplay stuff.
I'll +1 this, if there is one thing I really need furniture for it's storage...
I got the board games, I got the books - including a lot of RPG books, I got minis, & I got DVDs & video games - including retro games.
When I get into a situation to buy a game table from Wyrmwood, that will very likely be the only table I ever get from them, most people don't really need more than 1. Ditto a modular desk... especially since I will likely be adding it to 2-3 desks/tables I already have.
Shelves or other storage solutions I might quite possibly buy 1+ every few years
Ooo THIS! and thanks for the Allplay mention... Gonna check that out
I've been saying this for years now! Make me some storage options!
Completely agree with this. It is a natural extension of a market they have already captured vs. chasing an entirely different audience (which is fine, too, but harder).
I don't hate the idea of a rig system, but that is a very niche market. The one that threw me for a loop that I just can't see anyone reasonably using is the laptop holder inside a hidden drawer that isn't a drawer. It is layers of difficulty to hide something that is already collapsable. (The laptop holder already folds down) BUT playing devil's advocate here, a folded down laptop holder takes up the desk space where it is mounted, so at the very least this would maximize your desk space when the laptop is not in use.
I've got 2 dogs but i dont think either solution is something I'd need.
Now if you take that coffee table and just made the front all drawers...
My fiance and I plan to grab a Modular Desk at Unplugged (assuming Wyrmwood will be there) and this video immediately killed my enthusiasm because you threw out a January 2025 date for desk updates.
But then you went through the features. I hate keyboard trays, never use laptops or tablets, have never streamed online or been in a zoom meeting where I needed to be seen, and currently have a cheap plywood L-desk that I can't stand anymore. Minimalism is what I love about the modular desk, as well as holding everything up and off the surface.
Which reminds me...why can I still not pick up a monitor and computer tower mount from the website? One of the big reasons we've put off getting the modular desk on the website is because those are not listed.
Plan B or C should be storage and display solutions for games, books, miniatures, toys, models, etc. I want quality display cabinets that have lots of functionality. I'm sure may other people do too.
If you purchased a Wyrmwood table, you probably don't need another one; but display cabinets and bookshelves that match? Major new product line to existing customers.
I think quality cabinets and bookshelves are totally the way to go. Dog beds really only have a value to those who own a dog but everyone has a need for a bookshelf or display cabinet. Doug has repeatedly said he wants to take the company in the furniture direction so I see those options as a no-brainer. Besides, every gamer who bought an MGT for boardgames/ dnd/ wargaming definitely would need shelving for storing reference books, models, and terrain.
Crazy Ed: proficient in Bird Law
Just Charlie and I are masters at bird law
That tracks…
Dog beds and dog beds under a coffee table. Next, human beds, and human beds under the dining table.
Camera/lighting Rig and keyboard tray will be huge with both gamer and streamers. Matt needs to speak to the people.
9:36 The outdoor overexposure to the overhead fluorescent light transition... *chefs kiss*
Instead of building a rig from scratch, take a mega-rack, make it bigger (giga), find a way to secure it to the desk and you have the equivalent of a french cleat wall wyrmwood style.
You already have the production line for the rack, plenty of accessories that fit, and you can pimp it with fancy wood colours.
How about a hobby varient desk. Drafting feature, place to store miniature paints, bins of Lego, paper, pencils, and so on.
That tablet holder would be clutch for MGT
You cant overengineer a desk. Doug: - Hold my beer.....
Keyboard tray is only the beginning, Doug.
Recoding. Studio. Furniture.
Professionals will spend thousands upon thousands on this furniture.
Wait, if they are transitioning to "ship in 2 days", where's the table I bought March 1st, which was before the April Kickstarter?
I honestly despise keyboard trays. They take up leg room, and I have long legs. I need all the room I can get.
Yes, I had them on all my early desks. They are ergonomically awful and provide no benefit.
That tray isn't for a computer keyboard. It's for a musical keyboard.
for the streaming frame, take advantage of the modular mounting rail. an L-mount on each side with two tightening bolts (vertically aligned to reduce any twisting forces) and a full-length cross beam in the same wood as the table between those two modular mounts (firmly on the table surface for weight distribution, likely with a felt protector). From there, standard aluminium T-slot moulding. The wooden crossbeam at the back of the desk is always helpful to stop items getting pushed down the back. :)
The engineers would need to check weight twist loading once cameras, speakers etc are mounted, so two additional L-mounts for triangular frame rigidity (also using the modular rail) about half the depth of the desk are probably needed. As its a twist loading, a second rail wouldn't be needed here as its just keeping the frame from twisting out of vertical (and keeping the weight on the desk surface). The magnets would keep the front mounts aligned in the mounting rail.
As its not fixed to the table, existing desk owners could order it as a separate accessory.
Ohhhh.... I like that idea. You could have arms up either side, and one or two modular rails that are just from existing tables or close to. You could also mount shelves as well, and you'd then be able to have accessories that you think are only for people's coffee, dining, gaming or office table/desk but they use in their own way.
They have not solved the monitor mount problem. Seems like the rig system could be solved with deleting the magnetic rail on the back of the desk and just allowing the existing clamping mounts to attach. Honestly this is the biggest reason I have not purhcased a desk.
100% they didn't listen during the first campaign. I would no longer buy any desk that I couldn't use my existing monitor mounts with, unless it came with significantly superior alternatives. I have LG Ergo monitors and those arms are amazingly good but they need to clamp to, you know, a desk. They also didn't do a desktop PC case sling as all good desks e.g. Steelseries Magnus have available.
I’d agree with Matt on the rig system for the modular desk. Most people already have mounts for their monitors, lights, and microphones that attach to the desk and would raise up with it. I’d love to see an actual prototype and see how it could work though!
For the dog beds would be nice to have a padded option for the top around the bed. Similar to the game table seats. Dogs will chew the side with rough edges (wood) and some like to lay their head on the top.
The camera and lighting right would HAVE to be made of metal; as such, Wyrmwood would have to source it externally; it would probably have to be a custom-designed part to fit the actual proportions of the desks, and you would need at least 2 sizes, one for regular desks and one for XLs. I don't think the volume would be high enough to source the custom-made frames.
I like the keyboard tray idea for sure, because I personally like keyboard trays.
Keyboard tray idea is a killer one for desks.
Yes! Wyrmwood should take a look at the Grovemade desk and what they did for hidden storage and especially the keyboard tray.
Okay, hear me out:
MODULAR MAME CABINET.
CPU storage, accessory rail for cupholders and headphone & controller hangers, pull-out keyboard & mouse drawer, sexy bar-style brass accents.
If you're looking at easy line-up variations, maybe making a wyrmwood bedside table? Reduced footprint, but can use all the same design notes from both MGT and Desk. It could also be a way of using some failed topper panels that are near complete If they fail near completion
The rig is a phenomena idea Matt be crazy
"Is he carrying a Bazooka around?" 🤣
I too thought it was an over the shouder launcher but then I remembered wait that's doug not ED.
Nice editing and storytelling through this episode. Looked like a productive meeting and gameplan of what's to come.
I own a coffee table from IKEA that has the function of pushing up the table part for work and eat area. They somehow have incorporated a slowing mechanism to their spring contraption. Because when you push it to make it fall back into place, it slows on its own.
Looked it up on IKEA now, they didnt have the model i bought. But they did have 2 new models that are better "Östavall" or "Vitteryd".
Crazy Ed is like Charlie Kelly: total wild card; knows his Bird Law.
I actually just made a sign for my new shop extension that says “home of the original kitten mittens”
I know this is old fashioned but a drawer that is compatible for a standard letter-size filing system I think would do better than some folks realize.
Glad to hear you guys move towards keeping inventory. I plan on buying a house in the next year or so, and one of my planned purchases is a modular table. It was always off-putting to know I just wouldn’t have it for a couple years while it was back ordered.
14:25 People with white-haired, indoor dogs.
eg. Maltese, Bichon Frise, Samoyed (to a degree), Pomeranians, some Poodles, some Terriers, American Eskimo (the dog breed, not the ethnicity), etc.
Hairless dogs also work and they'd really appreciate the coziness of the sherpa.
eg. Xoloitzcuintli, Hairless Terrier, et.
I had a white German Shepard that primarily liked being indoor and I had the unfortunate mistake of having primarily dark/black wardrobe at the time. Not a single day were my clothes white hair free, but I appreciated the love all the same. But I did struggle to find a light colored dog bed that she liked, so it has a market it's just niche.
Try the finger test, with stuff on the table. Then it's heavyer and goes down harder/faster.
I think using/allowing the drawers from the standard desk on the large size desk would be a good thing to think about.
I want that tablet holder for the MGT! Please, I will buy 5 of them :D
I use a bunk bed frame to hold lights speakers and camera over my desk so having something like that attached to the desk would be awesome, however only on the back would be useless to me I need a whole frame over the whole desk (this is probably not useful for everyone however)
I would love the rig system! Also, maybe a cubby that can hold the PC? That way when raising/lowering the PC moves up and down as well and you don't have to deal with cables disconnecting.
As a desk owner, I like the idea of the light railing. My biggest concern is getting it installed to existing desktop and not throwing off the balance of the sit/stand motors. This might be a challenge for new orders, but this is where I am at. The other ideas sound cool but I think what will be the best so far out of this is the tablet holder. I think that would go better with the MGT though.
Wooden Key Board Keys (and wyrmwood logo) with transparent characters (resin) for mechanical key boards so they can match the tables wood options (good use of throw away bits of wood).
I have a large Amish made L shaped desk, and I love it. The biggest challenge I have with it is cable management. I have two cable holes, one on each end of the arms of the L, so it really limits what I can put where. I have a lot of devices and their cables running across the top of my desk to those corners. It looks awful, and it's a pain. I would also think about the depth of the corner formed by the L. The shorter side of my desk is 30" deep, the longer is 25" The corner formed where they meet is about 36", which is a looooong reach to utilize easily, especially for short people like me.
For the laptop holder, I'd rather see something that doesn't take up valuable desk real estate, like something that takes advantage of the mounting system. That drawer that's not a drawer for the laptop is a waste of storage and desktop space. You can't use the additional surface if you're also using your laptop. You might as well buy that holder you have, which can be folded up and put into a regular drawer to store. If you want to leave the laptop on the stand when you close up the drawer, you'll have to unplug everything. My laptop lives on my desk, and it would be nice to have it on something that I can lift/swing out of the way when I need to use the desk. That way, if it's connected to an external monitor, I don't have to disconnect any cables running to it.
I don't have a dog, but i still want that coffee table, so the first of two cents is simply add a shelf option in the middle in place of a dog bed. I, a customer with no dog, am very interested and all you gotta do is add a single plank of wood. Even better, this plank can be removable such that if i do get a dog I can snag a bed from you later on and boom ive got a wyrmwood dog bed.
Second cent, that "secret" drawer is not as appealing for either the dog bed(DB) or the MD. For the DB, the hardware selected is aesthetically more appealing but i won't deny the hidden is more aligned with wyrmwood's style (i.e. the "hidden" trench under the MGT); for the MD its not going to be hidden, its a bulky thing under the desk... ? Feels excessive compared to an L desk.
Love the larger dog bed table, but I think it would be much cooler as a dedicated living room coffee table. Maybe remove the the depression where the bed goes and then add in some room for slide out drawers or just leave it empty for store. Maybe some bis would fit well there.
I like the idea of the "secret" pullout drawer that on its own can be used as exteded desk space... there is NEVER enough desk space no mater how big your desk you always fill it and need a bit more space from time to time.
I didn't even notice Ian their till he was standing at the table bro's like my favorite woodworking ninja lmao. (sorry if I miss spelled his name.)
For the cubbies could you just do a thin cubbie? Something like 1-2 in deep, one drawer, mabye more that could keep attaching to the bottom of the last drawer?
Honestly my favorite drawers are paper storage drawers I use for tool storage, super thin and lets me store things not in piles. First order retrieve ability is king!
Been waiting for a desk update. Previously in a desk backers update, Ed said there are solutions to monitor mounts without the Mount Mount so development stopped on that. Could you pass on to Ed to give some examples of what is suggested for that so that I don't ruin my desk with scratches or anything while we wait for Mount Mounts?
I know you probably dont read these but for the curved backpole design (bottom left design at 19:57), for the love of god PLEASE make that strong enough to mount monitors on. I've been looking for a simple immovable setup like that for ages so my monitors stop getting knocked out of alignment
Your keyboard drawer looks like you could do a "audio rack" compatible desk for music professionals too if you are looking at lighting and camera rig mounting
I would suggest aluminum for the desk rig. As for hidden things, they are neat the first couple of times and then usually just an inconvenience. If it makes things harder or more likely to break, hidden things quickly lose their appeal for regular use. The leg solution by Uplift for their L desk would work on something that could be assembled with a left or right, shorter side. Can have pre-drilled holes for the legs easy enough.
I don't even stream and I still have a ton of different things clamped to my desk. The most important aspect of any rig system you make is how sturdy it is. I think you'd change Matt's mind if you were able to mount ALL his camera equipment to it at the same time and not have it collapse or shake/vibrate
As a 1/4th German I love the idea of over-engineering the desk to the point it becomes a literal Transformer, but as a 3/4ths simple Slav I say: "If it can't be fixed with a hammer and some duct tape in less than 10 minutes, it's way too complex."
Bobby montage was *chefs kiss*
Something I use regular (i.e Laptop stand ) would not be hidden. As someone with kids, the design should support the things folks would hide - like expensive headphones or a gun.
This episode and editing effin rocked. Great job 10/10
It would be cool to see a wyrmwood litter box cabinet design. Whether it’s a coffee table or end table or whatever.
Doug, after all these years of watching Wyrmwood that hat is your hair in my opinion. You're just not you without it now. It's part of your debonair charm :)
I'm excited to see the return of the coffee table. While I'm not sure how much use my dog would make of it, as a piece of furniture it looks nice. And having it integrate with the other modular furniture items in look and accessories is a great bonus. Will be curious to see what the final options for the "dog void" in it are.
will the beds fit in a standard size crate? You can buy the cushion for the crate during training and reserve the nice frame for when your dog graduates from needing crated.
What I would looove is a mount system for
both MGT and the Desk, where you can attach a camera arm to the system safe and securely to put either phones or cameras to. I want to be able to record my dnd sessions but my previous camera arms for recording with my phone damages the table with it's clamps or breaks because they are cheap. Your laptop holder at the end of the video, that locks in, is already 40% there.
Please make sure that any battery pack pieces you design, that the battery pack is removable / replaceable because Current battery technology is still just not that good and so they still require replacing eventually.
I would absolutely love it if you guys could make a pool table for your next big project. I'm finally moving into a bigger house and would love a padauk or Bolivian Rosewood pool table.
Dougie loves his secrets 🤫 Looking forward to the desk extender/keyboard drawer dev!
Hear me out… I know cats aren’t really on your radar, but what if you created sophisticated cat trees?
Have you considered the idea of an option of a hole in the back of one of the cabinets? As a diabetic, putting a small electric cooler in one to hold insulin would be great. No drawers, no shelves, just a door and a hole for the cord to come out.
Corner desk with a 45 degree between the 2 sides is my preferred style.
hope these new desk features are going to be designed to be compatible with the first version of the desks
Still missing the mark on the desk. Crazy Ed - if you're reading this, you probably know about modular storage systems like the Milwaukee Packout. THAT is the direction you guys need to go with the desk.
I am happy Wyrmwood is doing well! Gunna be real... as a fan and accountant, been sweating...
Of everything mentioned in this video, I want that tablet mount!!! That would be so useful for me for D&D. My tablet takes up space behind my DM screen and I would love to free that up.
Great episode! loved all the design ideas. Definitely would prefer to have the desk be equal sides. I would also be interested in a hutch. Though I don’t know if weight restrictions prohibit that.
The tablet holder would be perfect for the modular gaming table.
Yes, we have a 80 pound dog and have been looking for a handsome bed solution. Also, the coffee table looks interesting for our cat, not the dog. So the development of those two products are of great interest to us. 🤙
You need to send these home with the workers and product test them.
As someone with a lot of IT troubleshooting experience, I have seen every version of a keyboard tray and they all suck. I have never seen one that works well and most people find them uncomfortable to use and end up putting their keyboard on the desk.
My .02
Smaller size beds for cats, I'd be in. Coffee table with all storage instead of a bed, I'd be in. L shaped desk, I'd be in.
Just FYI, "off the ground" can be a negative features for cat owners especially. It's probably too small of a space for a cat to get under it, but it's definitely large enough to lose toys, dry food, hair, etc. When I got cats, a big part of my life became eliminating "unders" whether that was big spaces like beds and couches, or small spaces like cabinets. Replaced some furniture, ad hoc installed a lot of kick plates on others, etc. etc.
At this point if furniture doesn't go to the floor or within 1/4" or so, I don't really consider it as a possibility. YMMV.
That light washout transition made me "oooo!"
You don‘t need a rail with a fixed height. Camera, lights, microphone are all different height when I am standing vs when I am sitting. May just be me though…
That QR Code TShirt... I couldn't find a good frame to read it... so i recreated it in paint. Let me say that the results kind of sum up what i am feeling for taking the time to figure out where it went.
I just want to say that the main problem I have with my coffee table of this style is finding what the f**k has blocked it from closing, If you could box the mechanism off that would be amazing!
I think the desk rig system is probably the only idea that has real legs
A tensegrity monitor shelf or stand would look cool
So you're building inventory while I have been waiting for my desk for nearly 2 years.
Drawers on the coffee table should open on the opposite side of which the top comes up.
With push style drawers on a dog bed/coffee table, I'd be worried Doggo would learn how to use it to steal the tasty treaets you've stored inside.
"Is he carrying a bazooka round?" LOL!!!
Modular Desk new feature I'd love to see is a sliding/retractable/moving keyboard tray or shelf.
Johanne's singing in the background was great!
