I was struggling with deciphering the rule book, this video helped me IMMENSELY! I still have questions but I definitely feel less lost now and like I can figure out the rest on my own with trial and error! Thank you 😊
I just signed up to play D:AitI at a convention and was looking for a basic tutorial. This is really helpful - thanks! Looking forward to seeing how the system plays at the table.
Exactly what I was looking for, thank you! Also, your duty joke caught me entirely off guard and had me rolling because I absolutely did not expect it.
This is literally the explanation I needed. Over and over again I found videos who would walk step by step through the system, basically just reading the book to us, which is *not* helpful. The book sucks at teaching the game, *that's why we're looking for a video to teach it to us.* Synthesizing the book's information and teaching us the important bits is literally what we're looking for and you seem to be the only one willing to do that. There are so many game systems in need of this treatment that remain basically impossible to play because everyone assumes the book will teach everyone the game and they really don't. Lancer, Pendragon, Fading Suns, Zweihander, learning RPGs is done by tradition, not book reading, and if we never encounter someone willing to explain it the way you do, the system simply never gets learned. Actually, could you do videos on any of those systems? I'm sitting here staring at my Lancer and Pendragon books wishing I'd realized this about RPGs about $600 ago.
Thanks gnet! I have high hopes of doing a Zweihander tutorial in the next few months. In fact, it's near the top of my list. In a week or two, I'll put out a video for Primal Quest, then probably Symbaroum. Who knows after that. The bigger the system, the more time I feel like I need to play it before I do a video. V5 Vampire and OSE are also in my sights.
As of right now the excellent Aussie @RoletoCast players are 7 podcast episodes in on a custom DUNE scenario called 'Shifting Sands'. Listening to the use of mechanics is fascinating, but your video helps to make things more understandable.
@Zac Goins actually yes. A blow by blow breakdown example conflicts in real time. It's one of the more obscure, hard to follow aspects of the game. Like... videos with various scenes: a duel, a skirmish and so on
Question: in your example with the smuggler. GM set difficulty 4. You get the gm to reduce it by 1 for each asset used. In the example you mentioned that the smuggler trait and safe house will be used to lower difficulty. In the video you said that new difficulty level is 3, but isn’t it 2? Difficult 4-1 (smuggler)-1 (safe house)? Great video. This helped out tremendously
Very helpful video! Thank you! Though I'm not sure that you put the Drives use here right? "To select which drive to use, look at the character’s drive statements and pick the one most appropriate to the situation. This is not necessarily the most advantageous, as drives can often be a disad- vantage in some circumstances. The drive linked to the drive statement you choose is the one you must use for the test. If multiple statements are appropriate, choose which of those drives to use. If none of the statements apply, choose one of the character’s drives that does not have a statement to use in the test."
I got the “adventures in the imperium” book the other day … but this video is helping😊 I am also most of the way through the original DUNE book. I think i get it 😊.
How You count the exp of character? i see that there are limited options how to get growth point.Example after you lose test dif.3 ... thats 1 point...but you count every lose ?or just 1 EXP as general for such type of "growth" ?
Hello Bartek. I believe you are meant to count every loss as a point. That said, I have turned to just using milestone advancement and letting my party gain skills and talents after they've completed certain chapters of the campaign.
Playing a Mentat requires selecting the Faction template on page 111. It unlocks some cool talents that reinforce the brilliance that is part of every member. Our own Mentat used Calculated Prediction a lot (it allows you to make a Understand test and if successful you get to ask the GM questions about what is likely to happen in the future). The special talents in general give Mentats some really awesome abilities that allow them to deduce elements of plot and motivation that might otherwise be out of reach for other PCs' discernment. Of course, there's always going to be at least a modicum of a gulf between the brilliance of a Mentat and the intellect level of the player holding the character sheet. You can make sure that gulf feels as small as possible by remembering talents, traits, and assets of the Mentat, and making sure they're harnessing their features to the best of their ability. Award earnest roleplay, utilized features, and good dice rolls by handing out insight like candy on Halloween. This might seem like the Mentat is getting a lot of favor/special treatment at the table, but I like to keep in mind that the Mentat (and most other Faction characters in Dune) answer to someone else. They are not individuals or independent. A Mentat should always feel like they are themselves an asset to someone else and Duty should be a real part of their everyday life. Hope this helps! - Zac
I'll set the Difficulty Level at 1, but with your asset "Great Profile Pic", that brings the DL down to 0. I got it off Red Bubble around the time of the first of the new movie's releasing.
When we played this, we ran into this same question. What I told my players was, "You should absolutely feel comfortable using the same Drive for most of your tests. Really, it's when you're forced to do things against the base desires of your character that you should be selecting a different Drive a lot of the time." As an example, a PC that advises the Duke might use Power as their core Drive. But what about when the Duke asks them to deal with a problem that they feel is beneath them? Well, now it's probably Duty. Or what if that PC hears rumors that their Duke is being manipulated, and they decide to investigate? Well, that could be Truth.

Haha! I was desperate for some levity in this one. I love this system but I was terrified of getting too dull with the presentation.

Really helpful. Just sent this link to the rest of my group.
Appreciate that, Sarwat. I'll be putting out a few other Dune videos soon.
Fantastic. Thanks for putting this together
Appreciate the support! If there's another Dune related video that you would find helpful, just let me know and I'll see what I can do.

I noticed the same, it should have been a 2 as per the way he described it.
@@concernedearthling3353 shouldnt Subtle Words have applied as well?
@@concernedearthling3353 Think it was set to 5 because the GM added Commoner as a negative to the player.
Of course i look for a Dune video and its you sir. Thanks for running a great game, the advice and being a great person. GM Sam / Origins.
Thanks for hanging out at a couple cons with us! Let's keep up the tradition!
Great contributions! Thanks for taking the time to break down these rules! I really enjoyed your Alien breakdown too!
Hey, I appreciate that very much. I've been scrapping together a One Ring video over the past few weeks and I hope to get it up in the next few days.

@World of Game Design My game is starting this Sunday, and there is not enough how to out there for Dune. I'm so excited and even more nervous
Great video, thanks!
Glad you liked it!
Great content, thankyou. My only constructive feedback is that you should get a better microphone to upgrade your sound quality. Other than that, 👍👍
great job! =)
