I was there that night for this! I was 10 and my brother was 6. Our parents took us and just going to the Astrodome was a thrill in itself, being the first domed stadium. Loved every minute of it! Joey Chitwood Stunt Team for the Win!
I was at this as well. I was so excited to see Dar jump from the gondola, it was the whole reason I wanted to go. I was 9 and it was just me and my dad. Back then we lived north off 1960 in Ponderosa Forest, and went to the Astrodome lots for Oiler games and Astros games. I can still remember the wonderful hot dogs with relish and those steaming hot paper cones of peanuts. Dad and I went through at least 4 bags of peanuts every time we went. It's cool that film of this exists!
I went to this show as well. I live in Pennsylvania but visited my big brother in 1975 and he took me. I remember Batman and Robin were there with the Batmobile! Biggest thrill ever for a country boy of 12yrs. I still remembered Dar Robinson falling down from the gondola into the bag...so cool. My brother worked at A.J. Foyt Chevrolet as a auto painter. He had a Nova and he painted it green with glitter etc, he had Neon Nova painted on the sides. His name is David Fink (passed now) but was sought out for his painting skill. Wow the memories!!
We lived in Houston in the early 70's and my dad took me to this twice. It was a lot of fun for an 8 year old! The next big thing the was tractor pulls! Todays monster truck shows evolved from this! All the smoke from the junkers in the demolition derby would accumulate in the Astro Dome and make you sick, when it was all over everybody was scrambling for the doors!
Papie, do you remember seeing Batman and Robin with the Batmobile? I had a program book from that show, had it for years and wish I’d kept it. I told my wife about this show and remember it well. I’m glad there is RUclips to verify my memory.
Same show, it was Dar Robinson the stunt man. I remember it well. I lived in pa with my parents of course and flew to Houston to stay with my big brother...he took me. Very cool
Ken Carter, a Canadian, jumping that Pontiac over all those Ford vans. Was it a Pontiac? Note the Canadian flag on his crewman's back at the end of the jump. He went on to try to jump the St. Lawrence seaway in a jet powered Lincoln. There's a documentary here on RUclips, Devil at your Heels" all about it.
This used to be a two-night event. The Friday show wouldn't be as full, but Saturday was often close to a sell-out. I remember one year I got to go both nights. One very happy kid here!

(Dave here) I was there in the Dome when two cars collided , head-on...in mid-air! Spanky Spangler, I believe
The background music really makes you take a trip to the past
I used to go to these all the time as a kid . Very cool post!
I was there too, i wish they would bring these back.

@@davedave8602 We went to a few of these, i remember the crowds being pretty large.
Steve you must be young because in the 70’s car we’re everything. No phones, video games just real fun that you never forget.
