I'm sure you realize it, but all of us weekend warriors who make several mistakes on every project and figured out ways to correct them, really appreciate you showing yours. What a beautiful board. Well done, sir.
Yep, we all have lots to learn so that’s why I showed what I did. And in case you didn’t already know the main reason I messed up is I was routing in the wrong direction. Oh well, live and learn. Thanks for watching!
That's why I love using my cnc for juice groove vs hand router
Good for you for not giving up, happens to me all the time. You're the only one that will know where that mistake happened. Beautiful cutting board! Thank you for the great video!
Thank you and thanks for watching!👍
Excellent job on the board and I really enjoyed your edit. I’m glad you pointed out your mistake and how you fixed it. That’s where the real education is. This one turned out beautifully!
Thank you! Ya, I really enjoyed this one!
If you go clockwise with the router against the fence the rotation of the motor helps keeps it against the fence, it helps to minimize spin-outs... awesome work, thanks for posting
Yep, I definitely learned my lesson after making this board on router use. Thank you and thanks for watching!
Awesome job! Looks beautiful.
Thank you and thanks for watching!👍
Turned out beautiful!
Thank you!
Man i'm getting the instant jaelousy feeling right now. Really awesome work buddy! and the machines you have.. 👌🏆
Thank you and yes, I am very lucky to have them!👍
Good video! Thanks for sharing the juice groove fix!!
Thank you and thanks for watching!
Great work and cool cutting board and love the editing and the music, it all worked very well.
Thank you!
Beautiful end grain work.
Thank you sir! I really enjoyed this one👍
Looks fantastic. Great work. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you and thanks for watching!👍
Beautiful board, great work.
Thank you and thanks for watching!
Very nicely done, the board and the video! Keep it up!
Thank you! I did put some extra time in this video. So guess I need to try even harder on the next one 👍 Thanks for watching!!
Beautiful board, especially for your first one! If you hadn't have told us we wouldn't have known! 👍🍻
I just had to tell, figured it may help someone one day. Thanks for watching!👍
Beautiful!!
Thank you!
Beautiful work!!! The end result is stunning. We had no idea that cutting board oil and conditioner could bring out such colors and the grain. Brilliant recovery on the "intentional" mishap you made. I know you did it for instructional purposes, for beginners like us!
Thanks! Ha, I wish I could say it was intentional! I really did mess up and I was pissed at first!😡 But like I said, I calmed down and thought through it to figure it out😀
Majestic, beautiful, simply the most stunning chopping board I have ever seen. I'm so pleased you where able to overcome the error and like a great woodworker once said it's not if but when you make a mistake in woodworking and how you overcome it that matters. Great work my friend.
Thank you for the great comment!👍
Absolutely beautiful 🏆👍👍
Thank you and thanks for watching!
Well, that’s just gorgeous.
Well, thank you very much!
Beautiful.
Thank you!
Nice one! Cutting boards are one of my favorite things to make out of scrap!
Yep, even though this was my first one I see many more in my future 👍
@@LTDWoodworks I sold a bunch to co-workers :)
@@heyimamaker Yep, I do have one sold that I haven't even made yet. And one or two more people are interested. So we'll see where this goes👍
Very nice cutting board
Thank you!
Great job!
Thank you 🙏 Even though it has its faults I’m happy with it 👍
Lovely looking board!! 👌🏻... nice work and I loved the music 🎧 btw.
Thank you! I sourced all the music off of RUclips from various channels 👍
That’s is ever so beautiful looking
Thank you!
I love the end grain look. I know it’s a lot more work but definitely worth it, IMO
Totally agree. I have now made three end grain boards and love them. Haven't even made an edge or face grain board yet. Go figure I start off with the more difficult one😉
As a chef for nearly 2 decades, I've yet to have a cutting board that didn't overflow. The extra channel width is perfect to trap your drippings. Excellent job! Loved the video!
Thank you sir! Thank you for watching. I hear mixed reviews on needing the grooves or not. So far though it seems people do want them on the boards I make for my Etsy shop (shameless plug😉, link in the description). I have a better technique to making them so it’s easier and less chance of making a mistake 👍
BEAUTIFUL JOB !! It takes a great man to admit his mistakes and a wise man to show how to work through mistakes for a terrific end product !! Beautiful job !! you have a new subscriber !! I hope mine comes out as well as yours did !!
Thank you! Ya, I’m full of mistakes!😉 Another one not mentioned was I pushed the router in the wrong direction. Should have gone clockwise in that scenario. Oh well, live and learn. Thanks for watching and subscribing!👍
Don't gueve up my frend !
You can do it
Very well!
I think the direction of travel of the router makes a difference as far as how well it tends to follow the fence.
Well done! I liked how you copped to your slip up. Great recovery.
Thank you and thanks for watching!👍
Ficou excelente. Parabéns!!!
Marcus 🇧🇷
Thank you!
Very nice!
Thank you!👍
Nice board.
Thank you!
It turned out very nice!!!! Good job especially "rollin' with the punches" covering up your " opps!!!!!
Thank you! Ya, learned a lot on that one. Thanks for watching!
Protip: The router wanted to pull away from the guide because you were going counter-clockwise when cutting the groove. Cut your juice groove clockwise and the bit will want to pull the router into the guide, meaning that it will stay straight.
Nice recovery!
Thank you and thanks for watching!
You stopping and helping me see what went wrong will stick with me. Not being well versed in woodworking. I don't know if I could have thought through that problem. I probably would have told my wife that I was giving the juice a chance to go somewhere else, lol. Stunningly beautiful board. Keep up the good work.
Thank you 👍 Also know that I was going the wrong direction with the router too. Just something else I did wrong 😑 Thanks for watching!
Great video John and a damn great recovery on the juice groove. Keep up the good work. I'll give you a like and a sub.
Thank you and thanks for watching and subscribing!
Очень красиво! Прекрасная работа! Класс! +
Большое спасибо! И спасибо за просмотр!
thank you for sharing the mistake, and how you fixed it
No problem, thanks for watching 👍
Hey man, nice board. In the future, if your guide for your router is on the outside, you want to cut in the opposite direction, i.e. Clockwise. That way the router will pull towards the guide and not towards the center of your board.
Thanks! Yep, I figured that one out after the fact. Oh well, live and learn. Thanks for watching!👍
Another tip is to replace your router's base plate with a full round one so that you don't have to worry about accicentally switching from the round side to the flat side when going around the corners. I made mine with 3/8" thick plexi-glass, and as long as you center it with a centering cone, you'll never need to worry about the router's orientation again.
Great idea and tip👍 Thank you for watching 👍
Oh man....great recovery.
Thank you! I have learned my lesson on this one!
Nice board! We've all done that when cutting a juice groove. I just did it last week and I've cut 100's of them! Happens! I usually remedy it by going up in size of the bit. Another thing, you might try routing the other direction. Clockwise.
Anyway, you still made a very beautiful board.
Thank you! Yep, just did it again a few weeks ago. Uhgg! I did just what you said about going up a size this last time. Worked just fine. At least I did learn the right way to run the router as you mentioned. Course now I have a CNC so maybe I'll give it a try on there. Thanks for watching!
Oh I apologize! I was thinking of Howard’s Feed n Wax. You are correct. The conditioner is entirely food safe. The board is beautiful!
No worries, thank you and thanks for watching!
Bom
Nice video. I'm researching to make my first end grain cutting board. Can I ask a quick question? I see this on other videos but I am curious why two cuts? Why not cut the boards on the short side and glue up the end grains instead of doing a second cut and gluing? I hope my question make sense.
I NEVER have made a mistake like that. At least not that I have confessed to.😀
Ha, I guess I'm just a gluten for punishment letting everyone see my mistakes😆
Really nice! Especially the recovery! Do you account for the snipe from the planer in any way?
Thank you 👍 My planer was set up pretty good so snipe wasn’t too bad on this one. At least that’s the way I remember as its been awhile 😉 The planer is not set up as well now so now I plan to have extra wood to cut off. Thanks again for watching!
Beautiful cutting board. Thank you for keeping your error in the video. I can see myself doing the exact same thing and then wondering without your help how was I going to fix this mess. Your router base doesn't look exactly cylindrical, how did you rotate through this step and NOT have a wavy cut?
Thank you! Ya, I figured this would help someone one day. To be honest I'm not sure myself why there is a flat section on the router base. I do know that as long as you keep the round area up against a fence the router bit will always be the same distance away no matter how much you rotate around. But only if you do not rotate onto the flat area. Hope that makes sense. Thanks for watching!
Stunning board. perhaps next time spend a little more time lining the maple stripes up, they are a little stepped. Still an excellent effort.! Thank you for taking the time to make this video.
Ya, that board being my first board, I definitely had lots to learn. The boards I make now are much better with the joints being in line. Still make mistakes here and there but nobody's perfect. Thanks for watching!
You are a good man to tell your story. But two things. Actually the router did not leave the jig. But when you came around the corner the flat spot on the base contacted the jig. Also unless I am mistaken, if you had fed in the other direction the bit would have been pushing the router against the guide giving a little better safer cut.Really the board is just beautiful, thank you!
Oh I can still remember it happening like it was yesterday. It really was on the straight away on the first long side. Either way though it was a lesson learned. And yes, you are right in that I was going the wrong direction. Thanks for the comments and thanks for watching!
This is amazing.
I was wondering if you could tell me the metal tracks you used in your Jig please?
Thank you! I just added the link in the description (first one under the list of tools, etc) as well as the mineral oil that I now use.
Congrats on the shoutout! Christofix sent me!😇😎
Thank you! Ya, it’s nice when other people spread the word about other channels 👍
@@LTDWoodworks I'm normally a lot sooner. Was watching a couple long debates about hell and whether the Bible teaches eternal conscious torment or an eventual annihilation. Not that I need to be super concerned...as I do put my faith in Jesus to be my Lord and Savior...but personally I don't see how it fits His character to punish folks for longer than they were gonna live without Jesus giving eternal life....but hey. People believe what they wanna believe. In the end it will either align or malalign with God's belief. 😇😎
Jeffrey Potter uhh.... ooo...kkkk...? So this went from talking about RUclips related stuff to religion just like that uh? Hey, I believe dude, just also believe RUclips comments is not the place for it. I’m totally not upset so we’re clear. Just giving my opinion.
@@LTDWoodworks none taken. I tend to be transparent and wear my heart on the sleeve so to speak. I tend to be the same person on line as I am in person. I get that some folks tend to get uneasy and others can be encouraged. Sometimes the best friends can be made from total strangers...
My aim was not to convert more than to just be honest. I would not be the man I am today if it weren't for Jesus in my life. That being said I'm still not perfect...my goal was not to offend and at the same time...I don't wanna keep Jesus in a box of "this ain't the place for you". In my thoughts that can come across as denying Him.
I have been told I overthink things...and I've also been told I'm not thinking enough. Can't please everyone! Haha! 😇😎
No worries.
@@mrupholsteryman I'm not knocking your beliefs. It's just a bit odd to bring up what you did in this context. My video has nothing to do about religion nor any of the comments do as well. It would be like me replying to a comment on a cutting board with a long paragraph on how I feel about the 2nd amendment. It would make no sense. I feel like if I did that I would be "pressing" my beliefs onto that person. Everyone is entitled to their beliefs, it doesn't mean we should all just randomly bring up those beliefs out of context. If someone asks or wants to talk about it, great. If not, let it be.
Amazing work! (Loved the music by the way, I'd love to know what it is...). I'm kinda glad you screwed up because I do stuff like that all the time. Gives me hope....
Thank you! Gosh, been so long I’d have to go searching myself to see what music that was. I usually either use music from the RUclips studio or from the Audio Library channel on RUclips. And yes, that board and many other projects are full of mistakes. It’s how we fix them is what counts 👍
Normally routing on the outside you would route counterclockwise direction but cutting juice grooves since you’re cutting on both sides of the cutter, you wanna go in a clockwise direction which causes the router to pull toward the fence. On another note, I notice your board is quite a bit proud of your fence, I like mine flush with or less than a 1/16” above the fence. If my board is below the fence, I’ll shim it up a little. Great looking board, well done 👍
Thank you! Ya, this is one of quite a few mistakes I've shown off in my videos. Oh well, it's all a learning process. Thanks for watching!
@@LTDWoodworks yea and here’s the thing tho, if ur not making mistakes when woodworking, you not a woodworker lol 👍
True that!!👍 Then that means I’m an “expert “ woodworker!😆

can you do a video where you discuss the grain direction and how you chose a certain direction and why? I think thats something that no one focuses on but i realized is important yet have no clue as to how to do that

The oval/rectangle base of that router makes me nervous.
what was your final width dimensions? 11.5"? also, what length did you go with ?
Sorry for the slow response. It measures 14.5" by 11.5" by 2". The Maple stripes are just over a half inch thick. Thanks for watching!
I feel your pain. I bought a cheap cnc and problems solved.
That is definitely on my list of tools to get one day! Which one did you get?
@@LTDWoodworks I bought the Shark 120. Its small relatively inexpensive and comes with vcarve and a laser. It only handles 12 by 24 inches but is enough to suit my needs.
Ok, thanks, I’ll check it out 👍
Are you not going in wrong direction with your router ? Should be going clock wise??
Yep, I was going the wrong way. Heck, I still struggle with this to this day. Oh well...
@@LTDWoodworks yeah I have to think about, I’ll look at bit look back to the work piece and hope for the best, but it’s a beautiful cutting board.
@@stevebosley6212 Thank you and thanks for watching 👍
Hey do you know the dimensions of the cutting board?
It measures 14.5" by 11.5" by 2". The Maple stripes are just over a half inch thick. Thanks for watching!
@LTD Woodworks Thank you so much. One more question. What was the original size of the walnut board you got before you made the final cutting board?
Gosh, that was a long time ago. If I had to guess it was around 8 to 10 inches wide. Maybe 36 inches long and around 1.5 inches thick. I now by much larger slabs from a local sawmill and cut off what I need per board.
Hey, we all have boo boos. The ones like that, that can be fixed, tend to give me a little pride because of figuring out how to fix it and not use it for firewood! That is always my fear with a router. At least you didn’t have a big sneeze and run it clear across the board.🤧
Ha, ya, that would be a pretty bad "slip". Did that really happen?
@@LTDWoodworks No, but I have had some pretty good sneezes and wouldn’t have wanted a router in my hands at the time.🙀
Really nice looking board. My only complaint would be all those knots lined up on the same row. Just my personal aesthetic, I guess.
Thank you and thanks for watching! Ya, guess I should have flipped those sections around to break up the pattern some.
I think Butcher Block Conditioner is not food safe.
It is. Says so right on the front of the container. Butcher blocks themselves are made for preparing food on so a product sold as “Butcher Block Conditioner” will also be food safe.
Really enjoyed the video; getting ready to make a similar one. Question: What considerations go in to arranging the ends of the walnut pieces to achieve the nice patterns your board has? Thanks!
@@madeinvermont2643 The best way I can explain it here is on the first glue up you want the end grain to say curve down on the first piece, then up on the next one and so on. Then after those are dry and cut into strips so the end grain can be rotated up, you can arrange the grain however looks best👍 Hope that helps 😆
The real reason why it wandered on you is because you were going in the WRONG direction. Routing outside the workpiece you route counterclockwise. Inside the workpiece you route clockwise. You also don’t need to rotate your router around corners.. no matter what side is facing you the cutter head is always rotating clockwise.
Thank you for your input. I am well aware of the mistake I made at that time. We are all beginners at some point in time. As far as rotating the router around the corners, that is an effect of my body moving around and being sure that the flat portion of the base stayed away from the fence I built.
LTD Woodworks you sound super defensive over pointing that out. If you were “well aware at that time” then you wouldn’t have blamed it on not paying attention. Every wood worker makes mistakes on literally every single project.
I think this may be a case of what I’m always telling my wife. It is hard to “hear” people’s tone of voice in written words sometimes. I’m probably guilty of miss reading your “tone” in your first comment just as much as you may have miss read mine. For that I am sorry. For clarification I meant I am “now” aware of the mistake I made at that time. Hope this clears it up, thanks!👍
Really bad...no narration
Really bad, no punctuation.
This is incorrectly titled, it is not a "How to make an end grain..." it should be "Making an end grain..." There was no instruction or any type of information given, it is very far from a how to video. Pretty annoying when a person is looking for real how to videos.
Pretty hard to comment back to someone who gets annoyed so easily and can't follow very simple visual processes. A better option for someone who apparently needs more information would be to simply ask questions or offer suggestions like "Can you make a video to better explain every process?" To which I would have answered those questions or offered to make another video. But nope, you commented like you did which of course I and most other people would not want to help. Next time just move on to another channel of someone who can hold your hand through every process.
I messed up my first groove too. And I did the same thing....widen the groove a little bit more and sanded to a nice finish. Woodworking is all about fixing mistakes!
Ha, ya, I’m getting to be an expert at fixing all of my mistakes 😆 Thanks for watching!👍
If you hadn’t said anything, no one would have noticed a mistake! The board looks amazing.
Question, what was the second thing you used on it? And, do you need all that much oil? Is it to let it soak?
The one is a mix of oil and wax. It helps to seal the board. Ya, I put a lot on to help soak in then wipe off the excess. Thanks for watching 👍
