the thing with Brimstone is the radar seeker is active, the plane typically doesn't designate targets rather than just launches them, then they datalink with eachother to identify and target on their own. the Tornado just acts like a delivery system. Brimstone was designed this way specifically because Tornado isn't very good at loitering, it gets in and out very quickly, but Harrier was always the aircraft designed to loiter for this kind of mission. The laser guidance system for Brimstone is for cluttered environments to minimise collateral damage, so realistically speaking you'd be wanting to use that anyway - the only situation you'd realistically just use the radar seekers for would be going after convoys in air SB and the like. There's something to be said for the "dual-mode" not actually being dual, given they've not given the missile the ability to switch between both laser and radar, but in practice i doubt it makes much of a difference - enemies rarely use smoke to evade a missile anyway, most have no idea it's coming. And beside that point, as i said Tornado would not be the platform typically doing precision strike using Brimstone - that was what Harrier was good at. Nowadays Typhoon and soon to be Protector drones are what use the missiles in that capacity.
Personally, none of the GR.4's weapons systems displace the Harrier as the best choice for top tier CAS for Britain. As powerful as the PGM and Brimstone are, along with Paveway IV's GPS ability, the plane itself can take so long to turn in and out of attacks that it struggles to be flexible enough and react quickly enough for some of the systems its expected to fight. Tornado struggles to turn out quickly enough to defend if a system like Pantsir, FlaRakRad or Ito fires at it unless it's a rather long distance away - which as you said is awkward to use your weapons due to their slow speeds. However I am very much looking forward to Harrier GR.9, probably 9A for the punchier engine, whenever Gaijin feel they want to add that. In game terms, it'd essentially just be the GR.7 with the Tornado GR.4's loadout options minus PGM. THAT will be the truly defining moment for Britain's top tier CAS, even modern Typhoon FGR.4s are short by one hardpoint over what Harrier had the capacity to carry - this is what it was built to do.
Well said. I regret grinding down the Bomber line so hard because while I love the Tornado (irl), for gameplay purposes the Gripen or GR.7 would have paid off much more. The IR guided PGMs are wonderful (when they're not intercepted) but there's just not much to get excited about with the GR.4. Maybe one day the ordinance will get a bit of a second look from Gaijin but for now it's really nowhere near the level of capability that the US or Russia have at top tier.
Unfortunately the Harrier was never cleared to use Brimstones in RAF service as it was prematurely retired before Brimstone could be integrated. The FGR4 will be an absolute powerhouse with fully capable Brimstone and Brimstone 2 however.
@@cammarlow3951 more photos of Harriers fitted with Brimstone during their trials exist than of Tornadoes with PGMs. And I've *never* seen a photo of an RAF Tornado with a GBU-24, yet we get them. It'd be scandalously inconsistent of Gaijin to leave Brimstone absent from Harrier lmao. Tornado was basically just used as a test rig during PGM's development, neither the RAF nor the French Air Force actually use the weapon - yet both tech trees get them.
@@firetruck1255 100% agree that the implementation of PGMs is ropey, however the difference is that the Tornado and M2K don't really have any other weapon capable of doing the same job as a PGM in game whereas the Harriers have access to multiple AGM-65 variants. In fact the effectiveness of Mavericks is part of the reason that Brimstone integration was delayed and subsequently cancelled when the Harriers were retired. On top of this Gaijin have stated that they will pick and choose semi-historical systems for balance reasons rather than implementing everything.
Smin said that they weren't given IR or TV seekers because that would be ahistorical, which completely ignores when the radars on the British Phantoms were pulse before other PD radars were added, which is just as ahistorical.
Although brimstone is lacking in performance, it's still the fastest nato agm, and if im not mistaken, laser guided agms like mavericks and nord 30 have a limit of 10 km. Although i think it could be better if brimstone had f&f mechanic. Devs really could give it IR guidance as kludge and toss tornado to 12.7
Why even release the Brimstone if they're just gonna gimp it...
Because then people would be crying that they didn't add it and that they are adding planes without the weapons they are known to use
But that’s essentially what they’ve done here, they’ve added the tornado Gr.4 with the brimstone but it’s so gimped that it’s unrecognisable, they could have at least gimped the tracking but no they just removed it entirely
So they can act like they support nations other than USA and Russia, while also making sure no other nation actually gets strong.
I keep seeing these comments again and again... It's not the first time Gaijin has done this, or the second, or the fifth. Ever since we started getting more modern vehicles and weapons they've made big jumps in technology because that makes them money, but nerfing those vehicles and weapons because otherwise they would be too OP. Some quick examples:
-F-14A had a nerfed radar and AIM-54s back when it was added.
-Magic IIs for the Mirage F1, at first they didn't even have IRCCM modeled and were only limited all-aspect. Same goes for R-60Ms back when they were first added, they really weren't all-aspect.
-PARS-3 missiles from the Tiger UHT had nerfed range for a long time, because they were the only fire and forget AGMs for quite a while
-The British Phantom FGR.2 went from having no radar at all when it was added to having a nerfed radar and finally having the first Pulse Doppler radar in game.
The time will come when we have fully functional Brimstones (as well as other millimetric radar guided missiles) in game, but I think it's easy to see why right now they would be extremely powerful.
In my opinion the real unfair nerf to the Brimstone would be the shitty flight model they have. When the patch dropped, they were way too slow to accelerate, limiting their range, and I don't think this has been patched.
They should add radar guided fire and forget munitions just this time give everyone some good fire and forget stuff not like in the case of Kh-38 so everyone has a chance. Also when introducing this they should add anti-radiation munitions, passive radar modes and more stuff that could counter it. Put a cap on how many air vehicles can be spawned, increase the point cost of spawning and decrease the cost of planes with only air to air munitions. Make helicopters not immune to heatseeking munitions and increase their spawn cost so we don't have 1 assist/cap guy spawning KA-50/52 with full Vikhr loadout. Finally make ground maps a lot bigger and more suitable for modern combad vehicles
Full Spec Brimstones wont hurt ! Why ? It's only ONE jet in a less played tech tree ! It's not like UK TT is the sexiest TT right now.
or nerf the scouting sp deduction for LT
I feel like the CAS situation is getting worse since they implemented the scout for light tanks
@ Just play France. Small ground tree so ez farm, it has Leopards, good top tier helicopter and insane air tree with F-16 / Mirages that can CAS and they will get Raphael.
You should bring the 480 countermeasures instead of the chaff only ones because they come with missile approach warning.
On another note, the biggest downside I found to have in GRB is the lack of Fox 3 for self defense.
Why a goodboi that is in your profile picture
@@GoodboiOfficial I brought one of each for that reason lol, forgot to mention the MAWS being in the pod in that section though
what they should have done is giving the Brinstone and IR seeker for the time being. then atleast it would be fire and forget...
Cannot have it because then russia wouldn't be competitive with 6X KH38s with 2 R-77 and two R-73.
But then Russia loses its monopoly on cash and we can't have that
@@kazuviking you forgot to add "in a bus without energy retention and hmd"
@kazuviking the KH 38 MTs are way faster then the Brimstone. And honestly it would be good if for one a minor Nation had the strongest CAS
@@Ricktheminer Ingame the brimstones would play like a hellfire with an ir seeker ductaped to it. Aka slow af, shit damage, would miss the target by a mile. It would be like the pars 3 but worse.
9L use to be the most OP annoying way to die at 9.7-10.3, it has been nerfed obviously but "reminiscing" on how OP they were.
I grinded out the entire German air tree with the Tornado and kept a positive KD, it is usable in air but i love the Tornado so i'm a little biased.
Yeah brimstones are niche usage wise.
I like them to aggressively take out helis, as well as if I’m flying at SPAA one or two missile will kill them wuickly.
Honestly I enjoyed the GR.4 quite a lot in ARB, the 9Ms with HMS is extremely strong for 12.3, I just wish it had more sidewinders
The flight performance also isnt too bad and having MAWS + 480 CM is lovely
The GR.4 is however kinda mid in GRB, its not terrible but probably more worthy of 12.0
Hopefully later we get ASRAAMS (which will be nasty with HMS), ALARM ARMs, STORM SHADOWs and other (better) Brimstone variants, the plane still has plenty of room for growth. I also hope they give it the Brimstone 2 soon, which have SAL capability but a much improved rocket motor over the ones we currently have.
ALARM being a mach 2+ anti radiation missile with the ability to loiter, would be good for fighting Pantsirs.
if it got ALARM you could take:
2 x AIM-9M
2 x ALARM
9 x Brimstones
2 x PGM
1 x Paveway IV
All in one loadout
However, i think when we get the Harrier GR.9 and Eurofighter the GR.4 will be forgotten untill better Brimstones come
essay over
Definitely a plane British players have been asking 😂
Fire? as in Fire and forget? yeah gaijin....
Meanwhile I'm out here playing with f111s and f105 trying to get the f15-E as I have no fighters. Most scuffed lineup ever🤣
The Radar seeker Fire and Forget mode would have been just fine. How often do people smoke incoming Mavericks or Kh-38s? Almost never as they have no idea they need to until they are dead already. The Brimstones are slower than Marvericks and much slower than Kh-38s (which also loft attack). Plus the Tornado is a much worse platform than the F-15 or Su-34. It would have given the Tornado something that was better than it counterparts in other nations. Gaijin choosing to draw the line at seeing through smoke is daft when top tier ground is already saturated with Fire and Forget weapons.
I think the French pod is a very similar pod, looks very similar
I really wish they just reduce the number and give it thermal TV of brimstone instead of it having laser guided only.
Great content.
@@GaryPollard-o3c Thank you very much!
I love the Tornado (especially the ADV). I prefer flying those instead of Phantoms, even though they are still pretty subpar. Haven't tried them after this flight model upgrade. Didn't even know about that. Guess it's time to take the Marineflieger for a spin.
EDIT: Lee, if it's not too much of a hassle, could you take the F11F-1 for a ride sometime? 9.0 has gotten a lot better now that there is no possibility of seeing all-aspect missiles.
@@Jaeger_89 I made a video on the F11F last year, but I'd like to revisit it at some point. Fun plane

No love for paveway 4s, great bombs with GPS and laser modes.
Gimpstone
Wassup lee?
After all, it’s still a tornado
It wouldn't be op as its just a hellfire with an IR seeker completely overshadowed by the KH38s
Brimstones are beyond useless since you can actually overtake them after firing them from far enough away. You might as well use dumb bombs and terrain mask your approach instead of leaving yourself exposed since its actually faster.

Wouldnt have broken the game. Why ? It's one and only one jet capable of carrying it ! In a "not so sexy" tech tree.

When are NATO countries getting better top tier spaa?
