oh mann i also picked up jade city, the poppy war, and the grace of kings for the first time in the same year (back in 2020) and to this date i'm still waiting to find a better reading year than that. i feel like our tastes align pretty well, so would definitely recommend the sword of kaigen by ml wang and the broken earth trilogy by nk jemisin if you haven't read those already! great video and can't wait to check out more of your videos!

I’m definitely going to pick up The Grace of Kings! I read the Poppy War trilogy and it ignited a love of Chinese history inspired fantasy for me, so I’ve been eager to find more of those kinds of books. Personally I don’t think I’ll mind the dryness of the writing, as I read a lot of historical fiction, which tends to sometimes have a reputation for being dense.

I also only read The Lies of Locke Lamora and didn’t go on to finish the series even though over all I liked the book. I thought the ending chapters were excellent but the middle was kind of meandering. It concluded well enough that reading just the first book felt like a natural stopping point.
