In case anyone wants a simple more detailed explanation of a MOSFET A MOSFET is an electrical switch that used an electrical field or voltage to control the current flow. They are heavily used in electronic power applications because you can control high power loads like a 460V motor with a small computer running on 5V to switch the motor on and off. MOSFET have three connection Gate, Drain, Source. Your control voltage is hooked up between Gate to source thus Vgs and your device is usually hooked up between your source voltage and drain but that depends if you have a pnp or npn transistor.
As a current engineering student this kind of content is awesome and I wish could go even more in depth but I understand not all of your audience is as interested in the technicals of these explanations as I am
They should show episodes of Bumper2Bumper to physics and chemistry students. These are the exact reasons why you're learning these concepts in high school. When you understand why their application is so important, it gives a whole new meaning and motivation to understand it. Great episode guys.
No and yes, the way they are teaching it in school is wrong though, they focus too much on long and elaborate formulas and demonstrations that you need to spend a significant time to understand. they could instead focus more on the concepts and how they are applied. I didn't understand any of it until I had to study in depth for uni exams and eventually figured out how they applied on everyday bases. So yes they should show them videos like this.

Are we seriously not going to talk about how they tested the "517 mile "range on a freaking dyno? I think that might be something Jeremiah forgot to talk about.
@@fatherofgrain9769 no it's should've been less, regenerative braking might restore some your power but due to your speed, the wind, the road that you are taking (going up a hill and stuff) you will lose power. The 517 miles is the peak, where they tested in perfect condition. Also to accelerate (for example after you brake) needs more energy. So in conclusion, regenerative braking won't improve your range

if only ev took 10 minutes to fully charge then i will be interested in ev, my only problem is it took ages to fully charge while the charging infrastructure in my country is very awful
The way EVs work into your schedule is like smartphones, you’re supposed to mostly charge it at home and leave with a full battery every morning, with the chargers serving only special cases (long distance travels) but I agree that EVs do need a stable power/electricity infrastructure. Depending on where you live, charging at home won’t work if you still have intermittent blackouts, for example
VW has so much money they can just buy Tesla and rename them E-VW and no one would care. All jokes aside, once VW and Toyota (two biggest car companies) really enter the full EV race, Tesla will be long forgotten. They are just a trendy company. For example Porsche with its first ever EV Taycan in already better than anything Tesla produces, and they have been at it for a very long time now. Not to mention its little sis company Audi with E-tron, Mercedes with EQC or the best selling EV in Europe, Renault ZOE. Tesla had the headstart, but now that bigger companies are entering the race, Tesla is losing ground too fast. Everything they sold was just good marketing.
VW has their own stable of Engineers. They just are little bit more German about their publicity policy..... Plus they don't need to put out press releases about how they just invented "uber car" to pump the stock. Controlling stake is held by the Porsche family, so it's not like they have to fear hostile take over or angry stock holders demanding everlasting share price increase. As long as Porsche&Piech are happy.... VW can keep doing what they are doing.
you know VW has an insane amount more budget than Toyota (the second richest)? VW is insane! But the engineers are focused on gas engines, they work very different! If they want to they can get a Tesla engineer who only knows about electric engines. That will definitely help!

Lucid motors: "our car gets 517 miles per charge, way better than Tesla" People: "I'm ready to buy, is it available?" Lucid motors: "no" People: "will it be available soon?" Lucid motors: "no"
You lost me at the start : Can a car that doesnt publicly exist claim a title like longest range? Who has tested this claim beyond those that make it? Their website states "400+" which i find sketchy.
For the time being, it's unofficial but they have tested several prototypes showing the numbers they claim. Obviously it doesn't officially hold the title because it has not reached production. Similar to the Bugatti Chiron SS being the "fastest road car" in a stripped down prototype for the SS. The CEO acknowledges this though, stating they haven't truly achieved anything until their cars are out on the road
the problem is not creating a prototype that does a million miles. The problem is creating a production line that can deliver millions of them. That's where Tesla succedded and others keep failing.
Yup. Volume production is what matters. Not calling Lucid a Nikola Motors here, but at least they're testing prototypes unlike Nikola and batteries are being used in Formula E which gives them lots of data. They however got caught in the same trap Tesla did. Sedan market is shrinking. Should've gone with an SUV/CUV first.
@dichaos @Boomer0001 the great thing about Lucid is that they made production extremely easy for themselves with very simplistic yet high quality designs. They're nearly done with their factory in Arizona and they expect very high production numbers once completed. The motors will be assembled here in California and then shipped to the Arizona factory. They've already been producing their batteries for Formula E, so really they've set themselves up very well to enter the EV market with a great competitor. Obviously they won't be producing at Gigafactory levels quite yet but they have great plans. I would encourage you to watch the debut, if you have about 45 minutes to spare.
Rio Castanon I’ve followed the EV scene for about 10 years now. I hope they succeed and aren’t a faraday failure. I look forward to them making this car in large numbers if they can execute, which so far seems like they can, but we’ll see. Would be great to have a Tesla/Lucid dominate market. Heck I want in the stock too lol.
Boomer0001 I really do hope Lucid succeeds (considering I want to work for them lmao) I think the thing they hold over Tesla is quality. I have a Model 3 and it’s a very enjoyable car but the materials are noticeably low quality at times. Don’t get me wrong it’s ignorable but since lucid has higher materials I’m interested to see what Lucid’s Model 3 rival will be like

At least the Tesla does the best it can do until the software improves! Also have you ever thought of how many lives are saved by autopilot? Much much more!
@@harsimranbansal5355 If your autopilot kills people, it' not autopilot. Tesla refused to change its branding despite people dying and convinced the public that it's the dead people's fault for not reading the fine print to know that "Autopilot" was just a marketing name for driver assistance. Also there is no proof that autopilot has saved a lot of lives. That, again, is a marketing claim Elon makes to keep the blame on the victims.
Chih Chang planes have autopilot and that varies from just keeping altitude to performing completely blind landings! Autopilot the same itself means exactly what the car can do. Also it’s not fine print, you have to manually go in and enable those “cool” autopilot setting and a big pop up comes telling you to always pay attention. Along with that, the systems nags the driver every so often to make sure they’re paying attention. That’s like saying people died with airbags so it’s not production ready! That’s not how it works. Same thing with seatbelts!
@@chihchang1139 Do you really want them to make them idiot-proof so you can drive in peace? You are severely uneducated about this and misrepresenting info so bad it's sad.
The problem with these "tesla killers" is that making ONE car is fine, but creating a factory and infrastructure that can create thousands (and millions) of EV units is something else entirely. Tesla is lightyears ahead of every other auto manufacturer already, and the gap is only widening, quarter after quarter.
Something you could have said a year or few ago, but have you seen VW’s MEB platform plans? From a factory in 2019 to 16 factories in 2022, that’s going to really step up to the plate. I wouldn’t go so far to say Tesla Killer, because both companies have capability for units, a fan base, and marketing prowess, but it’s likely VW will outsell Tesla across the continents (except North America)
Production capacity? Let's all reflect on one fact. Toyota had sold it's 1,000,000th Prius by 2008... when Tesla had just started making cars. When the other 99+% of the auto market arrives it's going to crush Tesla.
Loved the video, Jeremiah has a real knack for breaking down technical topics which would normally be a snoozefest, and making them easy to digest and super fun! Bill Nye vibes for sure!
Angelina Love Porsche and Tesla didn’t get the same memo lol Old people are not switching from gas to full EV. They barely want to upgrade their phones 😂
I'll treat this the same way as I do Tesla, I believe it when I see it. Making a fast car really isn't everything to it. Its about pricing, reliability and stock too. Is it going to be way more expensive in the end? Will they wear out in 5 years? If they do catch on, can you get any?
Hold up. The reason why you don't increase the voltage of a battery is because you decrease the charging speed. In order to charge a battery, you need to put more voltage in than the battery can produce. It may give you more range, but it would take you longer overall to travel large distances.
Elon had the same thing happen to him at PayPal. It's disappointing to see that he would repeat the mistakes of those who he later proved wrong and surpassed.

I am kinda surprised these two EV's are so similar in cost and performance given how much Tesla has in over all Infrastructure, I'm wondering if it's this new tech inside the Lucid that allows it to compete at around the same cost? Either way great video and you're right, more competition is only good for us!
We will see what the plaid can do when its released. Elon is no stranger to wild unsubstantiated claims.

In case anyone wants a simple more detailed explanation of a MOSFET
A MOSFET is an electrical switch that used an electrical field or voltage to control the current flow.

Great episode guys.

No and yes, the way they are teaching it in school is wrong though, they focus too much on long and elaborate formulas and demonstrations that you need to spend a significant time to understand. they could instead focus more on the concepts and how they are applied. Kinda like every electric company does?? 😂
in actual driving conditions it would probably be able to go a bit further because of the regenerative braking

The way EVs work into your schedule is like smartphones, you’re supposed to mostly charge it at home and leave with a full battery every morning, with the chargers serving only special cases (long distance travels)
but I agree that EVs do need a stable power/electricity infrastructure. Depending on where you live, charging at home won’t work if you still have intermittent blackouts, for example

Bruh VW gotta hire a Tesla engineer
They can definitely afford that
VW has so much money they can just buy Tesla and rename them E-VW and no one would care.
@@mrcarson7765 the reason the French and the German EV manufacturers are selling is because they are propped up by the national governments and the EU
They both fear the day where all the French and all the German manufacturers have to close shop because they were not competitive.
Regarding size - there is only one car manufacturer that compares to Tesla 400 billion USD in size - this is Mercedes-Benz which is roughly 1.3 trillion USD
They need new management - not new engineers - the ones they have are fine - but the stock owners in German and French car manufacturers have to oust the management that holds on to income today that hinders future income

For the time being, it's unofficial but they have tested several prototypes showing the numbers they claim. Obviously it doesn't officially hold the title because it has not reached production. the problem is not creating a prototype that does a million miles.
I own a model s, best car I’ve ever owned even with the few issues I’ve had out of it. If they can capture more of the market with Tesla, it’s all good.
Well, as elon stated... Creating a prototype is easy, then mass producing it is 1000x harder.
Never thought id see a "muscle car war" with EV's, pretty interesting stuff 🥰

Hold up. The reason why you don't increase the voltage of a battery is because you decrease the charging speed. In order to charge a battery, you need to put more voltage in than the battery can produce. It may give you more range, but it would take you longer overall to travel large distances.
