Lake District Walks: Evening Views over Elterwater

  • An evening walk from Elterwater to Dow Bank, a prominent summit on the ridge between Loughrigg and Silver Howe. Dow Bank should not be confused with Dow Crag, which is situated between Coniston and the Duddon Valley and is three times higher. Dow Bank is not well known. At 270 metres it is not high enough to be included in any of the mountain lists, such as Wainwrights, Birkets or Marilyns, so most fell walkers simply ignore it. But the short climb and walk to reach it provides a huge reward in terms of the views from the top, which include 5 bodies of water; Grasmere, Rydal Water, Windermere, Elterwater and Loughrigg Tarn, as well as many of the mountains and fells of the South Lakeland region.

I'm pleased you enjoyed it. It is a place I also remember well from my first ever visit back in 1970. Hasn't changed a great deal in all those years.

What a great walk and yes, I had to put my hand up lol. Hopefully we will get similar views tomorrow, when we are meeting at the Britannia Inn at Elterwater for a relaxing 5 mile low-level walk, which is idea for Mrs Metalman and my grandson, with the Fellowship of the Fells. Cheers Alan

It is a little beauty Alan. Hope you had a great time. That low ridge is one of my favourites, and proof you don't have to go high to get great views.

So peaceful.. As I sit here watching in my cab in the middle of Birmingham.. I see part of the coffin route in Grasmere passes the bottom of the walk up to Alcock Tarn.. Thanks for this..

Thank you. I took my driving test in Birmingham. Many many years ago, in a mark 1 Vauxhall Viva. There is a lovely walk from Rydal, along the coffin route, then turn right and up to Alcock Tarn, then either up over Buttercrags to the top of Heron Pike and turn right, (steep, but my favourite) or go through a gate on the far side of the tarn, turn right, and search (usually in vain) for a very narrow footpath across the fellside, past Ducky Tarn, (so small you can jump across it in drier weather) and then on to the top of Nab Scar, then back to Rydal for a well earned cup of tea, or pint of bitter if you're not driving. Super walk, which does need a bit of navigational skill here and there, but great fun.

Why do you always carry what looks like a very heavy rucksack even on short walks ? I love your videos by the way.

Good question. That old bag had sections in it, so it looks fuller and heavier than it was. Even so, there was plenty in it. First of all the basics, so, a bit (not a lot) of spare clothing, map and compass, small first aid kit torch etc etc (even though it is not dark), the kind of stuff that goes on all walks. The first aid kit has come in handy on several occasions over the years, but rarely for me. I've helped other walkers with a variety of problems. The same is true of the map. I know where I am going, but there have been occasions when mist has come down and I've needed the map, and many more when I have met a walker in need of one and helped them out. Then there are the things that are specific to the walk being filmed, so camera bag, spare lens, cleaners, a notebook with my loose script. Add in a bit of food, I am a fruit lover, so there'll be at least an orange and an apple; and a drink, on this occasion a flask of something warm. Over the years I have learned to try to keep things like camera equipment to a minimum. Thankfully, modern technology allows that.

      @@jonathancraigguides Well explained thank you.
We travel light apart from the many, many snacks and drinks which would be pretty useless in a heavy mist unless our bait had maps, compasses, guides and parachutes attached, but at the moment M&S don’t provide them.Keep up the good work your onscreen guides are a thousand times better than watching some of the junk on the telly !!! In actual fact your presentation must have encouraged loads of people to explore the beautiful Lakes. Regards Pam & Dave AKA CHRIS BONNINGTON ( I think not )

@@davidwheatley1119 Thank you. That made me chuckle, especially the bit about maps, compasses adn guides with parachutes attached. Are M&S mssing out on a niche market perhaps?

You and a few million others I reckon. Lots of people drive by it on their way up Langdale, or walk past it on their way along the ridge. It is a perfect place to sit and watch the world go by on a warm summer evening, although ensuring you are equipped with insect repellent is a good idea. The midges up there are rampant!
