Playing this song is hard enough-crazy that someone wrote it. Eric Johnson is a genius. Very awesome cover.
Check out 'Liszt' (Hungarian Rhapsody No.2) or 'Paganini' (Caprice No.24), both are utter lunatics on their instruments... and then check the years they were writing their incredible music in!

Eric Johnson's genuis is in his composition. Don't get me wrong, he's a stunning talented guitar player as well, and this cover does it justice to be sure. But *composing* a piece like this takes a certain mad genius, and that's where his talent really shines.

Anyone who’s been playing guitar for many years can play this song if you spend a few years practicing it. And if you can’t, then your not a very good guitar player, that’s just facts!
She makes great videos and is absolutely talented, but her saying it took her a month is 100% dishonest.
That was absolutely amazing - bought the CD when it first came out. I was mesmerized by the song - and your cover has inspired this 56 year old man to pick up the Strat and get back to learning this song!!

as solo artist, I strongly advise against this, learn that new style of music that no one has invented yet, it's inside you man, it's inside all of us bro
He wants to achieve a goal he gave up on once, not be the Next Big Thing. With Sophie's video slowed down to .25 and the guitar tabs, even if he has to do it a few notes at a time, I think it's both achievable and worthwhile. Just a few notes at a time. Pretty soon? Voila!
I’m 43 and I came away from this video with the same impression. Her playing is so fluid and tasteful that it’s very inspiring.
Sophie, I've been playing for 37 years and 'Cliffs of Dover' changed my life forever. It took me personally a couple years to get it. (we didn't have great resources to learn back then) Anyways, you're a true player and it's so awesome to witness how great you've become. Respect 👊🔥💯🖤😊

Hit me right in the heart strings with this one. My father who is not with us anymore used to jam this on his 85' Strat and we would all watch amazed cheering him on. He was one hell of a man. Died on 11/11/06 another Angel learned all His lessons. Thanks for this Soph
He wrote this song in 83, it wasn't (Officially) released till 1990. I wore socks like that in gym class in the 70's and early 80's.
Awesome playing, very smooth and abit cute sound even, different and very close to the original at the same, less aggresive picking maybe? And maybe a bit cut down i dunno, anyway i saw u on magician mansion and happy about checking this channel out and find out about it even, and good job on doing the effort of learning a complex song like cliffs of dover!

I've been learning Cliffs of Dover for more than a month and I have only managed to dominate the intro, it really is a pilgrimage. Love your music, great guitar playing as always, thank you Sophie.
It'll be so worth it in the end, that intro is probably the hardest part of the whole song!
If you can dominate the intro, the rest of the song isn't as hard. I'm now faced with the same task of learning this in a month (playing at Halloween party).

I learned to play this years after playing it on guitar hero also. Guitar hero has influenced alot of people to pick up the real guitar as kids. Its legendary
My guitar teacher saw me playing Guitar Hero once and told me that if I ever played that game again instead of practicing my lessons he would quit giving me classes.

Wow... I wasn't expecting your cover to be this good. Totally amazing playing... so clean and precise. You clearly have total control of that instrument. I've been trying to learn the intro to this song off and on for literally years, and still don't have it quite right... that last descending lick at the very end drives me nuts! It's getting the articulation on the lower strings and making it sound clean is a life goal of mine. You've totally inspired me to work on it again.
I had the privilege to see this performed live by Eric from a distance of about 10 feet many years ago. A friend of mine from high school knew him (I'm not sure how, anymore), and was comped several tickets to his show, and he invited myself and several other friends to come along, at a small venue in Houston. You really did it justice.

This was a great cover. I’ve listened to the original 1000 times and I can say you pretty much nailed it, but it also makes us realize that Eric Johnson’s tone and depth is really hard to replicate and is pretty much unmatchable. Thanks for sharing, we know it must’ve taken a ton of hard work to get it this good

I've played thousand times this music in Guitar Hero 3.. one of the best music in the game
I grew up listening to these type of guitar tunes. At the time there was like a few dozen 'guitar hero's'. Do they have any new guitarist that are as creative as the Vai, Johnson, Yngwie, Gilbert, Gambale etc. guys from the guitar rock era? I stopped listening to popular music in college when the grunge movement took over.
Sophie, are you a classically trained violinist? If not, you are an anomaly.

Having learned that song when I was younger, I can appreciate the effort it takes to play it. I never was able to play it that cleanly.
Most use distortion to hide mistakes, but it is apparent that you have great timing and chops!

After this song RUclips kicks me to a live video of Eric playing it in 1990 with this extended minor key noodly intro that only he got to write and then he finally kicks down into this song at some frantic tempo that only he was trying to play this at. So itchy. The tism running wild, that's what this song is.

ZOMG! This is now my favorite cover. Since I first heard this EJ masterpiece over 30 years ago it's been my holy grail. I've been playing for over 4 decades and I always return to these riffs and the opening solo which is gorgeous and spectacular. Your tone is wonderful.

I saw Eric Johnson in concert back in the early 90's when he opened for RUSH, and when he played this song, I was an instant fan because up until that point I had not heard any of his music. You absolutely did a wonderful job on this song, thanks for sharing your talent with all of us.

Good lord that sounds like an amazing concert. Seeing rush in 2015 was a treat beyond a treat. Still had it after all these years. Plus it being their last time in Columbus ever made me realize that I will never see this good of a show ever again
I saw him in 1978 warming up for Sea Level and then 1982 warming up for Stevie Ray Vaughan. He was really good but out classed both times by the headliners who were some of the greatest bands ever.
