I got seriously into planning when I retired due to anxiety and depression. My therapist's advice was to aim to tick off just one thing a day. I'm now up to five or six things a day. My planner has been a life-raft, and every so often it needs a tweak, and that's OK. Every tweak is one closer to peace.
I started a planner club at my middle school. My kids can’t afford the shiny planners because they are 13 and young, broke, and disorganized, so to redeem myself from spending foolishly on various planners that I found I don’t like, I’m repurposing those planners and sticker books and donating them to my club kids. THAT is my planner peace-helping my young, broke, disorganized little munchkins love planning and just playing with stickers with them. Personally I’m a goal setting, deco-functional planner, so the super pretty, all decorative, no function gives me zero contentment.
Maybe not totally related but I also think that many people overcomplicate things 🤷🏻♀️ Like they try to track random things (weather, clothes, moods, etc) they don’t need just because other people do it or they like the idea of it, or they make massive lists/schedules that look overwhelming. Then they can’t keep up with it in their current planner but try to do the same in the next one.
I’ma need you to doodle us a sticker that says planner fucking chaos, TIA!
Sending healing vibes for your family ❤️
omg
I second this motion 🙋🏾♀️
Thirded 🤣🤣🤣
I’ve been going through such planner chaos lately! And I know it’s not the planner’s fault-I think it’s just a symptom of the general restlessness I’ve been feeling in my life lately.
dude, that is NO joke. i've been there. often. haha
After seeing your daily planner, I started using a cheap small lined spiral notebook (that I already owned) as a very detailed daily to do list in addition to my A&O. It has been working great. I only do 2 page weeklies with days on one side and rolling to do list and habits on the other, and I realized it's more of a reference for what I get done, not what I need to do. The daily list lets me break things up into smaller pieces, take notes on tasks, and cross shit out without feeling bad. Today I wrote down "hairball cleanup", which really justified separating the daily small tasks from the beautiful official completed task ledger in the main notebook. Just this week I started putting tasks I might need to put off on a post it note so I can move it to the next day more easily. Similarly I added a shopping list post it to the A&O in a blank space that was always left in my habits area. Tiny changes that have made a world of difference for me.
I love this. Sometimes a stickie note is notes elsewhere are just what we need!
I think we bring this upon ourselves and we overcomplicate the planning. Planning as we know it has only existed for the last few years in my opinion. I’ve had agendas since middle school and I never spent as much time/money/energy on planners as I have in the last couple years and I got a lot more done back then and I think it’s because I didn’t complicate it! I got 1 planner a year and I used it every day and it worked perfectly. Now I’m looking at new systems every week. I do enjoy the community and I understand that this is a hobby and a business for many.
Couldn’t agree more. I didn’t ever consider myself a “planner person” although I always used one.
I’ve also learned to check my mental state when I am frantically searching for a new system. Usually that’s just a sign that I am overwhelmed and I need to make non-planner decisions.
I am still a 1 planner at a time person so I’m often overwhelmed when I see new year planner stacks of 3+ planners.
Love the honesty as always. We all have to be honest with ourselves. If you are collecting planners, then just say that! If you are planning your life, just say that! If you are tracking your life, just say that! There's nothing wrong with any of these.
exactly! it's how I feel about shit like washi tape - if you don't plan on using it and just want to collect, that's FINE as long as you're honest with yourself about it...
now i need to apply that to my ever growing sketchbook pile. 😅
You are so right. I am a Filofax user since the 80s. I have one on each size - A4, A5, Personal & pocket. The best combination for me at the moment is the A4 for everything and a pocket size to keep in my bag for appointments. With just Filofax inserts, a pen and a highlighter. The few stickers I have are in a drawer for now.
PFC - Planner Fucking Chaos 🤣🤣🤣
One thing I’ve learned is that mistakes in your planner just shows that you lived. It’s not perfect and so am I. Embrace your faults as learning opportunities. Another thing- embrace the white spaces. I’ve used Passion planners, rA5 rings and now I’m in a
Hobonichi Cousin, plus a Moleskin Journal that I only use monthly to highlight epic events. Thanks Cindy, I’ve learned so much from you.. Keep the tips coming…
i agree! it's why i don't mind crossing shit out!
Dude. I'm so tired of planner words that make no sense to me. I have one "planner" that's used in the true sense of the word. My daily schedules go into it. I have a medication and symptom tracker (not a wellness "planner"). I have a faith binder, again it's not a planner. I have a home binder because I don't put my plans into it. And don't get me started on a "catchall planner." It took me over 18 months to figure out that it's basically a to do list for most people. I guess people call them planners because that's what they are marketed as, even if they're not being used as such 🤷♀️ Once I realized the term "planner" didn't really mean what I thought it meant, my planning mindset was at peace. It was a long, tough, struggle, but I am content where I'm at and able to enjoy using my set up.
Yes to all of that. Also I have to say you look amazing in that light. And that lip color. Fantastic! 🥰
This video spoke to me! My family has recently gone through some life changes. In order to deal with the stress of work and adjusting to tour new normal, I thought buying a new, or several new planners would fix the problem. NOPE! I have bought an EC weekly horizontal, an EC Daily Duo in both A5 and Classic. I found them for a steal on Amazon, thus justifying my purchases. I am waffling between having my life in separate books or just using one, as I have been using a Happy Planner. That should actually read several Happy Planners on the same discs. I am at a total and complete loss. Which now has me in my pj's during my spring break watching videos, like yours, to figure my life out before I go back to work on Monday. I am finding that this is spilling over into other areas of my life.
I like what you said about making the planner fit into our lives rather than the other way around. My planner contentment (trademark CGB) seems to be fluid. I guess that's why I stick with a discbound system (Happy Planner) because it seems to be the most customizable. One of these days, I'll get a grown up one like Makselife.....
I really want to be the chunky TN planner person with tons of ephemera and a cool vibe. Unfortunately I'm just chunky.
Now, I'm blissfully stickering my HP and carrying on with life.
There are so many planners I think are so cool and pretty and smart and will never buy because I also think they would never actually work for me. Self-control is hard though and I do not like it.
I think of it as more of a “Planner Ceasefire” than peace. Because of a bucket of mental health and a cocktail of ND stuff, I need routine…and also somehow novelty. It has to stay the same and also be totally new, or it’s either too overwhelming or I can’t pay attention to it. So, every few months, I need my systems to feel new…without being actually new. I try adding aesthetic differences or sometimes new techniques for tracking tasks in conjunction with my paper planner, to keep it accessible for my chaos gremlin brain,. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it really doesn’t. When I’m in a HUGE funk, I need to change every single thing. That wakes me up again and gets me back to focusing and caring about the details, and luckily doesn’t need to happen very often.
Planner contentment is workable. I've been using an EC for four years. It's not perfect, but I don't change until the next school year.
As a retiree I find I don’t need a very complicated planner anymore. I am using a bullet journal very simply with a vertical month and to do page on the other side. I leave a blank page in between months and make all 12 months at once. No need for a future log then. I dont need daily’s or monthly’s. Collections go in the back. I’m going to try to stop watching all the new planner videos when they come out. Less is best for me! I still enjoy decorating my bujo but I am kind of a minimalist. But I do love color. I hate to think of all the m9ney I have spent on planners.
Right now I have two planners and a notebook. Notebook is daily use and one planner I use close to daily, it’s a functional planner that I might add a couple of stickers to on lighter weeks. The other planner is my fun planner. I can sit with it when the mood hits and use it primarily for decoration/hobby. I might also use it for brain dumps, memories, journaling, etc as the mood hits. This system seems to work best for me because although I do like decorating, I need to get my stuff done.
I have been using a Franklin Covey planner for many many years - it's not as sexy as many of the new planners but I can't give it up, so I guess I have achieved 'planner devotion' 🙂 But I am always on the hunt for new ways of tracking my (many tasks) and tips for hourly planning to incorporate into my planner. Thank you for all your reviews and comments, I love your videos especially the occasional F bombs, it's such a versatile word 😜
Love your analogy with Garth’s quote! 😆 ❤ can’t wait to get content and continue to give my new system a try- wait it out and see if it works
Super scary Cindy, I just looked up a billion planner peace videos this week including yours. Your Skillshare class on it was great! I MUST stop planner jumping it's such a function of my ADHD
my favorite way to combat the new and shiny temptations is always to try out the layout of the planners before i buy. in 2020 i wanted the PPWeeks, but i kind of also knew in my heart of hearts that i would absolutely hate it so INSTEAD! i got myself two standard sized TNs in the grid and simply took the layout from the PPW to use for my health planner for last year. i loved it! saved me from buying the covers too since i already own a TN. when i wanted the Hobo Cousin, i tested out the layout several times before committing to buying it, and now that i own it i'm having so much fun planning.
trying it out before buying really calms down that curiosity and the need to buy all the planners immediately AND you get to test your compatibility with said planner's layout.
Yeah I love this tip! This or printing out the spread. It’s saved me lots of money over the years whenever I’ve considered cheating on my current planner 😬
My planner peace changes as I change and I'm finally at peace with that. I use to feel guilty for not sticking to one specific planner but now I allow myself to go with the flow. It all depends on what's going on, sometimes I need creativity, sometimes I need function so that I can be productive. I signed up for your SkillShare class through your link.
My writing/life coach gave me permission to change systems when my planner is no longer working for me because I was feeling so guilty about it. I don't buy every new shiny, but as my business/work evolves, so do my needs. I now don't feel guilty about not finishing a year in one planner. Trouble is, finding that one that works. I LOVE the momAgenda EXCEPT that the size I like, in the spiral bound version, is Academic Year and I HATE working on an AY calendar. I frankenstein one of my planners, but the other I don't want to deal doing that with.
Planner traps are REAL! I used your "Picking a Planner" video and it really helped. I'm learning to be a peaceful planner. Thank you.
Because of you and for the first time since about 2015 I used 1 planner from 2020- now.
I’m in a happy planner that I sorta frankenplanned. I also don’t watch many planner videos that aren’t yours. I enjoy your videos BUT it doesn’t make me want to buy stuff. Thank you! I owe my planner peace to you!
Yes, planner contentment!!! Planner "pease" is such a joke, like chasing a rainbow or unicorn hunting. I'm still working to find a planner that really works for me, as the past few years I haven't loved the planner I've chosen for the year. Last year I gave up and abandoned it around August. This year I'm really trying to put an honest effort to using and having a planner that works for me. Thank you for this reminder.
Also, thank you for the reminder about jumping on the trends, chasing shiney things. With all of the planner "influencers" it's hard to be contend with what we already have when they are waiting around new shiney things.
SERIOUSLY
I agree with you that a planner must fit me. I’m committed to my Live, Love, Inspire Business Planner. I took my time to find it , buy it, and didn’t rush. And I enjoy using it and it fits what I need for me and my art business.
I use a bullet journal as my main planner/tracker/notebook. I use my iPhone for my calendar/appointments. I have a busy day job in public administration and his combo brings me peace ✌️
The search for planner contentment is one of the many reasons I enjoy your planner reviews. I will try formats in my bujo and see what works and what doesn’t. This has saved me in so many ways.
I am using, for the first time the Maskelife yearly planner. I love it! Done the happy planner for years but it was time for a change. Wanted to try goal setting as well.
i'm loving mine too!
I've jumped between planners. Tried EC because of popularity on RUclips, it just doesn't work for me. Went to agendio for a while since it's so customizable but I spent like $100.....not kidding on a planner that I was in for like 6 months and then just got sick of. Tried going back to ec and quickly remembered why it doesn't work for me. And it doesn't help my "need" to waste money on cute stickers. I'm expecting the passionate penny pincher planner to come because I need daily tasks to help me with keeping up my home. I got it on sale for $40, doesn't need any stickers so I won't keep spending money on it. I'm going to give it a real shot and hope it helps.
Omg yes … I need to watch/listen to this every week lol
I jumped into digital planning two years ago with my lesson planning and just decided last fall to try it in my personal life. I love the “system/concept” of digital planning and feel like I have planner contentment with what I’m using. With digital planning I love that if the planner I’m using stops working, the things I still have (like stickers) will continue to work and it doesn’t take up a ton of space in my office until info back or find what works for me again!
I have planner peace. Maybe I'm the exception. I tried every planner out there until I found the Hobo Weeks. It's perfect for me and my life. I've used it now for 4 years and have no plans to change. When I see people changing planners because they're bored or want the latest cool thing, I know they don't use their planner as a planner. They decorate it full of shit that it's impossible to actually plan their life. They don't know how to use a planner. My planner is for my life and keeps me on top of things. When it doesn't work they go on to another and make the same mistakes. It's a continuing cycle.
Yep. I can see this. In the situations you are describing I often wonder what is the difference between planners when the page is often covered beyond recognition with stickers and washi with no space to write. To me it would seem the layout isn’t the issue.
I was in planner fucking chaos! Trying to use so many planners I was going crazy and not getting stuff done. I put them all away and started using the hobonichi cousin and I have been happy every since
I struggled with this. I decided to go the printable route so that as my life changes I can add new elements in to suit that and remove the sections or inserts that don't
“Planner contentment” is much better than “planner peace” as I’ve experienced contentment with things but never peace- peace, to me,is a nap. Or a glass of wine.
I’ve adored Amplify for my needs but FOMO grabbed me by the throat and I bought a Makse planner. Worst decision ever. I like it -sort of- and use it for goals but I miss my power sheets. I know I’ll switch back Iin March.
I use a plum paper daily for my daily lists - I’ve been doing this for a while- contentment for sure.
I think contentment is a solid word and feeling. Great vid as always.
Feel better to you and the Fam
I compiled a list of what I've used. 8 planner systems from 2004 - current. From calendars or calendar/DIY combo to Happy Planner. 4 years in one DIY system, 4 with At-A-Glance calendars, 3 Blue Sky calendar 'journals'. This May will be 4 years in Happy Planner. Bug started to bite my hiney around late summer/last fall but I was already committed to the HP I had for this year. Thought I finally got the setup right this year but nope. Barely into February and my eyes are straying big time. Don't think I'm doing too bad if my average is around 2-3 years in a system? Good thing I can't afford this for a full on hobby unless I don't buy any more games this year and use my game money on the next planner system. I have a decent planner backlog so it is doable once I make that commitment. I'm feeling this one, Cindy!:) I'm ready to move on and try a different system.
I am definitely guilty of planner hopping. I actually find setting up a new planner to be a soothing experience and I love it. Buuuuut….I don’t believe any planner will ever be perfect and have everything I need, and I eventually just need to stop hopping and commit. I’m currently in an A5 daily duo, an a5 plum paper vertical priorities, and occasionally switching between the Powersheets and MakseLife for goals. It still feels like too much.
I learned this year that simple is the way to go - used Hobonichi for years, A5 and Weeks, but last year I found I wasn’t using enough of the features to justify; this year, I have a blank journal for … journaling, but I’m no long looking at blank pages (I only fill it up when I have something to say), and simple monthly/weekly spreads for items that need tracking. I also find that I no longer keep long ToDo lists, I keep a “Done” list in my planner (very satisfying), and a “WantTo” on a throw-away sticky note for the other stuff - working great 👍
I am currently really into Japanese planners but I used the cheap planners for decades quite happily. I am working on tweaking my system into the following categories: portable, professional, and personal.
This is awesome! I committed myself to taking this whole year to explore my HP planner, to try to save some $ on a planner, and the flexibility of it.
Thank you, Cindy, for this timely reminder!
I've always struggled with being really good at making plans and really bad at actually doing them 😂 I've tried Powersheets and 3 or 4 different planners the last few years, but I think I've finally resigned myself to the fact that despite how much I love pretty notebooks/ journals, digital planning works better for me. Giving Trello a try this year, and so far so good!
That is such an interesting talk ! I'm a bullet journal girl and I just got into (already made) planners this year... Using the Plum Planner daily. Fell in love with the layout. After a couple weeks in, I'm realising that I do love it but it's not enough. Might need to get a monthly to future plan and use both in conjunction and see if that works out for me ! I tried another system in January and it did not work out. It's really hard because you really do have to try a bunch to figure out what you want !
Praying for your family!
Whew! This was a WORD. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you for this! It was a good reminder for me as I'm still adjusting to a new system and tweaking as I go.
Can I just say how much I love watching you! Praying for your family
All this right here! 👏👏👏 all the new shiny gets in the way... trying a million different things that I thought I wanted made me realize I already had a system that worked and I loved. Love this video!
I love your honesty so so much!
Love the "chat in my car" videos!
I am currently trying to adapt to the Makselife weekly (dated). I have never used a goal setting system before but I did purchase it because it was the shiny thing that everyone seemed to be using. I did want to do goal setting for this new year but I can honestly say it has been slow going for me. I should have all of the goal portion set up by March. I use the weekly portion more as a to do list and put appointments in it..so that works out fine. I am adjusting to the narrow spaces..so I am considering using it as a schedule and placing times in the columns so I can use it for better time management. It is a work in progress for me...and I refuse to purchase another planner because they are expensive...so I am a use it until next year kind of person...taking note of what I need and want from a planner is a great suggestion and I am doing that with my current system. Thanks for your videos..I look forward to each and every one of them!!
I ready for a different planner the one I have doesn't work well i have the clever fox A5 size. I'm ready for a bigger planner. I want to get the Live Rich Planner along with the TBM budget planner.
I bought TBM planner. Have been using since Nov 2020. I love it! I’m using a daily Day Designer flagship that ends at the end of June. I’m eager to see what changes she makes to LRP because there are a few things I don’t like about the current version that would prevent me from ordering.
I’m also currently considering ShePlans planner because I believe she is going to start offering quarterly sewn books again (she switched to discs which I’m a little nervous about). We shall see.
Fortunately, I have a free daily Kitlife planner that I can use for July-Dec. this will give me a chance to make an informed decision because I have major life changes coming in the fall. I feel like it will be best to make a switch at the end of the year when I see what I need instead of making decisions during a moment of pure chaos. Lol.
@@dsimone3720 OMG, I hope you’re right about She Plans bringing back their sewn planners! I switched to those after Inkwell Press stopped making their sewn quarterlies, and I found the She Plans to be even more functional. And I like the owner of She Plans, she seems calm and thoughtful and sensible. And I think her prices are actually fair, which is refreshing.
I will never have the absolute perfect planner! I’ve accepted that
good for you!!
I like the whole peace vs contentment sentiment. I love my Jibun Techo for time blocking. I added a Makselife flagship this year for goals only. I won't reassess until the end of the year, but while it's a bit of extra work for me with 2 planners, I think it's working well for me.
Also wanted to say, I'm a new-ish follower. And I love your videos. I'm so here for the reviews, helpful tips and sweary advice 😁
Definitely in planner contentment! Added back a Day Designer for work after dropping it like a bad habit for my bullet journal in 2019. Still in love with my bujo, but I recognize the fact that I may enter a phase of life where it won't be ideal anymore. I dread that day but oh well, I'll adjust and move on.
In the meantime, using these two together, because I balked at putting work stuff in my bujo almost immediately after I started this job.
i love that you're adapting as time goes on!
I am content with my current setup for daily planning but I am struggling a bit with setting long term goals and steps to move toward achieving them. I do plan (ha!) to give the goal-setting part a good chance because ultimately it comes down to establishing or changing habits and that has always been hard for me.
Thanks for your video today and I also realized that some "planners" don't feel right to us and never thought about it until today. I started using a Dingbats (1/22) vs BUJO (offiicial book) and realized for me I like the feel of Dingbats notebook, the paper and it works for me. My Hobonichi Weeks is my main planner (I am retired) why make any spreads all done for me. My BUJO is for the rest of my life I mostly use it for lists, doodles, notes, journaling, and daily dumps.
i can almost predict I'll hate something and yet if it is pretty enough I might still get sucked in. like, what??
I’ve found planner peace, but I’m also neurodivergent so change is not something I enjoy too much. I love looking at new planners but I also recognize that none of them will work for me.
that's more than a lot of people recognize!
Also neurodivergent, plus Critical Care RN that likes everything perfect, so I know in my heart nothing will fit all my needs. I still buy the new shiny, and I HAVE TO STOP. This helps.
@@NicoleBertone I'm lucky. The Japanese style 24 hour vertical weekly is the perfect layout for me. During lockdowns I had a ton of time so I made my own version of the layout and now I just print it.
I love all the new shinies but they just dn't work for me. I tried a bunch of layouts from HP (got a bunch of the clearance planners for $3) and none of them worked. Now I don't bother and save my money for stickers. So. Many. Stickers.
@@adorabell4253 so many stickers!
My problem is that I have 2 planners that I LOVE and both work for me. But I don’t have two different uses for them, so I just end up writing the same thing on both which is super redundant. But I like them both and want to use them both. It’s dumb. 🤣🤣🤣
No no no it's not dumb! I do it too so it can't be!!
@@JT1358 okay, it helps to know I’m not alone! 🤣🤣
everyone just needs to find their own way, there is no one size fits all solution
yep!
You say all this and I just recently switched to a new todo app. What do you do when you're the problem? How do you actually check the planner everyday?
The planner is a tool for the productivity system. But rather than being 🛠 it turns into 🍆 ..... it's not the size ,I understand, but all in the way you use it.....
a very poignant video. my first instinct with getting a planner is to think it has _has_ to be consistently formatted and/or Instagram pretty. Having channels give tough love and say "my dude that's not how planners _have_ to work, and having planner content creators show mistakes and inconsistencies are unsung heroes. In my case, at least, it's not the "i have to make sure others' planners look 'ugly' so i can feel better" but a reality check that my perception of what a planner is and should be is a tad unrealistic for the function it serves. I can use it as a reference point when my own spreads aren't pretty/perfect/aesthetic etc.
