Hi Jason, Thank you for doing all these reviews. Been riding bikes for 50 years and it was time for a new bike. I checked out all the Pivot bikes, Yeti and other bikes. I am 5.5 and I am currently on my old Yeti ASR5-C which I still love. It's just a point and shoot bike and great bike for its time. After watching to your reviews and theseting out these bikes,I really felt that the 29 inch bikes were just too big and felt like I was driving a simi. I checked out the Yeti 135 and the Pivot Shadowcat in 27.5 and I narrowed it down to these two bikes based on my riding style. I watched your review of the shadowcat and compared the two bikes and was sold on the Pivot Shadowcat. I am excited to whip this bike around. Keep doing these reviews because they are important to all level of riders.

I went with @mtbyumyum and purchased a Ripley V4 3 yrs ago and really appreciated his video reviews and comparisons. Still love that bike and kept it. But I live in a pretty flat trail area so my daily rider is a SC Blur XC with 100mm front and rear with faster XC tires on them.

Been watching you for years now. Every bike is such a good bike. You promote one and then later in one of yours live chats go back to ibis ripley, or at one point ibis ripmo, only later to be the yeti sb140 lr. But ripley has always been you favorite. Looking at all yours videos, you always talk great about the bike you're showing. I don't know what to think.

Thanks! Thanks for your constant and very detailed reviews which are an amazing help choosing the right bike. I appreciated your personal recommendations as confirmation of my choice of bike. I got the switchblade with 160/142 mm travel All Mountain which easily keeps up with 170 mm travel more enduro focused bikes, it amazes me every ride again. Pivots W-Link seems to make the difference! BTW., I am 52, married and father of 2 and full time working self employed, just as your average viewer ;-) BTW 2: the trail 429 works perfectly on your trails, the switchblade would be too much., However, my dream ride will be some high mountain tours which I will do with my switchblade in a couple of years, still need to train and get better.

I love to hear this! V4 Ripley is my favorite bike of all time. It is not my most recommended bike of all time, though. I think a lot of people are afraid of a bike being too squirrley underneath them. Although it was never a problem for me on the Ripley, I know the t429 can handle slightly higher speeds And feel more stable. I also think it climbs slightly better.

OK…I’m 190 lbs..on the Ripley v4 for 3 years, rode the T429 for a week in Sedona…I prefer the Ripley…but I am an East Coast blue flow trail with occasional chunk. The Ripley is just the most fun bike I’ve ever ridden. Sure if I was doing regular black, chunky trails (like 30-40%) of the time…the. T429..but I am on blacks 10-15% and my Ripley hangs tough…esp the better rider I’ve become. I also own a Ripmo V2 and the best way I describe the T429…is it feels exactly half way between my Ripley and Ripmo…despite what its specs say on paper.

Pretty cool to see sale prices similar to used bike prices, thanks for the head up Jason! One question - do you think the 429 would feel noticeably more capable than the Cervelo ZFS-5 120 I picked up used earlier this year? Kind of kicking myself for not going with a 429 but surprised how similar the geo is. I want to go back to something a little more confident downhill, had a Rocky Mountain element and really got spoiled by that slack geo…but with these prices I could probably buy a new 429 for close to what I can sell my zfs for…

Because your an expert on ibis, have a question…. Currently own a Ripley v4s and want a bike that climbs similar but more travel. Is the ripmo V1 a good upgrade ? Yes old model but I need a bike that can climb similar to Ripley but handle better descents. I don’t need a ton more travel so ripmo v1 caught my attention. I want light weight trail with DW link. Thoughts ? Thanks 🤙🏻

The Ripmo‘s gonna feel like a pretty different bike. It won’t have that same zippiness that the Ripley has. And it doesn’t climb quite as well. It just feels different and needs a bit more speed than the ripley. Honestly, I think you would be better off looking at the trail 429. It feels more stable and controlled at speed and still climbs as well as the Ripley plus, Chris at Salt Cycles has them up to 35% off right now. Give them a call and see what he can do for you. Very little windows for riding, at times it's weeks or MONTHS without riding only option being with kids on baby seat attached to my oldschool hardtail.

Just my two cents, at 210 pounds, I never felt the Ripley v4s was flexy. That said, with the new V5 Ripley moving slacker and with a more progression in the suspension, it has, to me, become a more aggressive rider’s bike.
I can’t agree more with your view that the more conservative geometry of the 429 is a better fit for most riders. A 66.5 head angle provides plenty of stability, while still being nimble enough to steer with the bars at low speeds. Likewise, the slightly slacker seat tube angle puts less pressure on your hands when riding flats and long grinding climbs. On sale, no brainer, I would get the Pivot 429 over the Ripley v5 (and I like Ibis, having had a Cousin It, Dv9, and still have a Ripley V4s and Ripmo v2 (son’s I ride).)

With any pivot, they are great until you get past the medium size. Once you go to the size, large and extra large is where everything goes to crap. The chainstay stays the same while the reach grows and grows, giving you unbalanced geometry with crazy bad front end vagueness that just wants to constantly wash-out. You can make it work, but you'll never have the speed, stability, or front-end traction that you get with balanced geometry. Even Specialized is inching their way towards better balance. I'm on 495 reach, 15mm clamp, and 452mm stays. I think this ratio puts me close to where you are on the medium Pivot. With most manufacturers, the medium size is the sweet spot..
